Review
When I first picked up this book, I was looking forward to a leisurely reading on obscurantist Heideggerian bullshit. I was wrong. But once I got over my deep disappointment that the book was, in fact, intelligible and not littered with ramblings about Dasein, I began to appreciate the book for what it was. A major contribution to social theory centering on time acceleration as the fundamental variable of modernity. Rosa takes his deserved place among the giants of sociology --MD, Carleton University, Ottawa
Ever get the impression that life is passing you by, or there are not enough hours in the day to accomplish all your desires?Social Acceleration is the theory exposed in this book that society, both in perception and reality, is constantly speeding up. The ever increasing speed of events and activities leaves individuals with less and less free time to enjoy life. The economics of capitalism is a large driver in social acceleration, by creating a constant cycle of development, distribution, obsolescence, and re-development. The goal of this cycle is to create wealth and eliminate waste, and what is more wasteful than unused time. Advancements in technology promises to free us from harmful effects of social acceleration, but it is a false promise due to our human nature. Human nature is the underline driver of social acceleration. As humans, we have a great desire to experience as many events, objects, locations, and relationships as possible. A capitalist economy provides ever increasing amounts of goods and services, which satisfies our human lust of materialism. Time saving technology such as dish washers, trains, cars, etc provide initial relief and free up some time to the individual, but eventually they prove more of a burden to be managed as our human nature drives us to use up our free time in some other task or project. Hence, life gets more complicated and stressful and we run ourselves raged just to stay in place.I really liked how the author uses a lot of referenced examples to build up a case for social acceleration. The examples are very relate-able to an individual and help to see how the pace of society is accelerating.I disliked the repetitive nature and choppy flow of the writing. In the course of many sentences, there are pauses, idea refinements, references to previous points made, or indications of deeper discussions elsewhere in the book. It made reading and comprehending the main ideas of the theory difficult to master.Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone. The ideas and theory ring true to me. The author does a good job trying to explain some very abstract ideas about social acceleration.
In contemporary times. this book it's very helpful to understand the technology acceleeration, the social acceleration, the cultural acceleration. He describe characteristics about contemporary issues.
My dislike of critical theory dates back to my reading a critique of Jazz music by Theodore Adorno. I found his critique to be just his personal preferences couched in fancy words. My opinion was reinforced by my reading of Herbert Marcuse's One Dimensional Man. I admired Marcuse a lot, but as I told him one time, his idea that the proletarian masses were completely deprived of critical thinking is simply an academic prejudice. His idea of cultural emancipation, I said, was that the workers would make a revolution for more bread and after the revolution, their consciousness would be uplifted by Cultural Commissars such as himself. It will never happen, I remarked. And I was right. I remember having dinner in Paris one evening many years ago with Gerard Horst (Andre Gorz) and his wife Doreen. "Do you often come in contact with critical theorists?" he asked. "Not if I can help it," I replied. I did read Telos for several years and found one or two good articles. But that was it.Rosa take an obvious fact about modern technology, the ability to accomplish tasks more quickly and at lower cost, and turns it in the "essence" of modernity. In fact, modernity is multi-faceted and has no essence. Rose argues that the modern technical capacities lead to the acceleration of social life in a manner that undermines the stability and well-being of individuals. He never even tries to prove this. He simply asserts it. Well, I certainly don't believe it.Rosa writes well and at great length. But he is just expressing his personal and not very well founded opinions in elegant academic prose.
An exceptional text. Thank you professor Rosa!
Although the author may have believed his theory was original, all of the essential ideas in his book were explored 15 years earlier in a groundbreaking work, Hyperculture: The Human Cost of Speed.
