Others have said pretty much all there is to say, both good and bad, so ill hit the highlights. The romance was Insta-love/hate, and got old really quick. The 17 year old main girl (no heroine here!) Acts like a boy crazy 13 year old tangibleT h e whole readers/ghosts thing could have been intriguing, but was poorly explained and executed (I was constantly confused and not sure what was going on.....and not in a good, suspenseful way) ......The whole thing was just frustrating! The 'romance' was somehow cheesy, cliche, irritating, eye-roll worthy, and gag worthy all at the sametime....with no good side.I come go on, but overall it was frustrating, confusing and irritating all the way through....with very little redeeming humor or characters.

I honestly can't tell you what prompted me to pick this book up. I've never read this author before, I'd never even heard of this book. It may have been the gorgeous cover, or it may have just been my needing to go back to my original love- Paranormal YA. I had tried it a few times before recently, and the results were never very good. And when I say paranormal I mean TRUE paranormal. Not dystopian or anything to that effect. I had been on such a long kick of New Adult and Contemporary Romance that I needed a break. I read to escape and as amazing as that genre and all of it's kick ass authors are I needed a total, could never in a million years happen unless I was on some kind of psychotic break- kind of escape that only true paranormal could give me. So, when I read this description I thought sure might as well give it a shot. And then it took me forever to actually choose it on my kindle. You ever have those moments when you look at all the pretty book covers on your kindle and say to yourself "why did I download this?" and "what was this one about again?". Welp, I'm ashamed to admit that I did that a few times with this one. But the cover just kept drawing me back. So I decided I would open it up and give it a read. I did this yesterday. I finished it last night. So, yeah.Piper (love the name choice btw) and her younger brother TJ are dealing with the unexpected murder of their mother. Her dad on the other hand isn't really dealing it at all. He instead put them on a boat to a small New England island to live with a grandmother they've never met before. Piper is a typical 17 year old girl. Angry with the world, snippy, full of attitude and sass. But she has a pretty good reason to be. She directs a lot of said sass to her grandmother Rose who, apparently, pretty much runs the island.Enter Zane. Brooding, handsome and kind of a prick. He has secrets, along with many of the people on this island, and Piper is determined to get to the bottom of it.Piper and Zane's intense hate/attraction towards each other is hilariously awesome. So many one liners I want to steal and use on people in real life. And just enough cussing to make me not feel too old for reading this. But Zane is fighting his attraction hard. Harder than someone who just thinks the other person is an entitled "Princess" like he insinuates constantly. There's no way to fully go into the rest of the book without giving A LOT away. So I won't. All I'll say is the paranormal aspect is refreshing. It's a new bit that hasn't been done a million and a half times. The world building is interesting and J.L. Weil has a knack of revealing just enough at each time to keep you satiated. That's not to say I didn't figure out some things here and there on my own, but there were enough twists to keep you hooked. Oh and I'll also say prepare to be PISSED. Because the book ends with this:Piper and Zane's story continues....Black CrowComing in 2016Yeah, you read that correctly. But regardless, thank you J.L. Weil for giving me what I was looking for in a new YA Paranormal series: Love, snarkiness, rarely used type of good/bad guy, angst, and awesome BFFs (you'll love Zoe). Can't wait until (grrr) 2016

White Raven, which is the first book of the Raven series has been in my TBR for a long time now but I'm not really sure how long that is, haha. But I do remember the reason why I added this book in my TBR, aside from the story, I was captivated with its enchanting cover. I love the vibe it exudes which is kind of mysterious, and as you can see with my raging 4 star rating, this one didn't disappoint at all. Actually, I do think I could have given this one a perfect 5 star rating and I'll tell you more about it in a few minutes. With a generous sypnosis like that one above, I'm pretty sure you'll be tempted to try out this story, won't you? And luckily, it's as good as the sypnosis. On the early chapters, we've got to know about Piper (female lead) and what she endured after her mother was murdered. With her father mending a broken heart, he agreed to have Piper and her younger brother TJ spend their summer vacation at Raven Hallow, a small island where their grandmother, whom they never met live. The next chapters started to get more interesting when this hot adonis in the name of Zane Hunter was introduced. And the moment he and Piper were having their moment, I swear, my sanity was nowhere to be found lol. I already know this one's going to be a supernatural story but even if I'm already in the middle part, I'm still groping in the dark what really these people from Raven Hallow are, especially Zane. There's so many questions and mystery this book has that sometimes I think it has more mystery than MHC's books lol. I have my own set of guesses what this story gonna be but I was shocked when I found out what this book is really about. My! I don't want to spoil the fun but I think it's safe to say that there's a lot of reaping going on with this series lol.Oh heck, I don't really want to drop some spoiler but it's hard to shut my mouth especially if I'm this excited, haha. When I found out about Zane, I was really shock. I mean, I wasn't expecting that. When Piper said about his eyes changed when he was engaged into a fight to save her, I was 100% sure that he's a vampire. Haha, I guess I should blame it to my fascination with vampire movies and series eh? When I found out about Zane's true identity, the manga/anime Soul Eater just instantly crosses my mind. I guess it was on the second chapter, it mentioned that Piper loves to sketch which is mostly some anime/manga characters so I think this story is somewhat inspired with the anime Soul Eater eh? Well, come to think about it, they sure share the same idea. Not all though, I think only the idea about reaping and such.I do love the anime and I was really glad that I enjoyed this one too, especially that it involves a hot alpha male, hehe. I personally don't like his name but man! I just can't help but fall in love with him. Well, it's not a surprise since I easily get attracted to bad guys hehe.I'm always a sucker for teen romance too so it was a relief that this one didn't just have a great cover but also has an equally amazing story.Piper is your typical teenager. The angst, the stubbornness, name them all, she has them. She can be too much of a headache too, to the extent that I wanna smack her myself. This story was taken from her own POV and I have to say that I kinda like the way it was written. She can be a pain in the ass but I love her humor. I also love that she somewhat became clumsy when it comes to Zane, haha, their first meeting was kind of hilarious lol. I can't even count how many times I laugh with her choice of words too, haha.Zane on the other hand is mysterious and dangerous, but really really really hot. He's a kind of guy that when you look at him, you already know he's trouble. Piper has been warned a thousand times about him, and I guess I understand why she can't shake off crushing over this bad guy. He's charisma and all is too much to endure that even though how dangerous Piper's situation is, I'm willing to change place if I get to have him, haha sucker. Aside from being an a-class a-hole, he's actions and words we're somewhat confusing. I mean, he's hot and then he's cold all of a sudden. But overall, he's still hot, period. Haha.I actually love the idea, but I find some other things lacking for this story. I don't really want to be a bummer but it can't be helped. Piper's grandmother is like the queen of all the reaper clans so I find it quite questionable why their massive mansion don't have some hordes of guards especially now that their lives were in danger. Plus, Piper walking out of the house without a bodyguard is a no no considering the island is full of reapers lol.Don't get me wrong the fight scenes was intense in this story, but there were times that it's hard to picture them out so I ended up skipping some lines so I could go on to the other scene. But even with those things, overall, I think this story is a great one considering it's the first book of the series. So I'm pretty sure the next book would be more fantastic.I was constantly asking questions over questions while reading this story and I think it was halfway through the book that all were laid out, well, not all actually. There's still a lot of unanswered questions I want to know the answers. So yep, I'll definitely get a copy of the second and the third book soon. This was my first time reading a book from the author and I was really impressed. I love the writing style and I love the idea of this series. So yep, definitely after this review, I'll be stalking the author, haha.If you want teen romance merge into a supernatural settings, then White Raven would be a perfect book for you.

YA, paranormal, first person single POV with a cliffhanger. This is an interesting novel that takes known mythos, shreds it up and spits back out a tale that somehow echoes the original foundation, yet takes on a whole new identity. Ravens, crows, sparrows.... it’s a mystery that quite literally captures the FMC’s life and throws her into an ancient story without enough information.I liked it. There is a Dirty Dancing vibe, along with that shivering feel of the Vampire Diaries, though this tale is wholly its own.Pros:- Unique- You are just as confused as the FMC.- Zane... he’s dark, broody and deadly awesome.- YA, but like other J.L. Weil novels (Saving Angel) it lacks the immaturity of some YA novels, thank goodness.Cons:- Plot is complicated, but not so much that you can’t interpret what happens next. I like being surprised, this didn’t do it.

Emma Curtis Hopkins was called the "Teacher of the Teachers" because almost all the great names of the "New Thought" have attended her classesEmma Curtis Hopkins: Forgotten Founder of New Thought (Women and Gender in North American Religions). Her way of thinking about the Hidden meaning of the message of Jesus Christ was far too much in advance to be understood in her time...The "hidden meaning" revealed by Emma does not postulate obscure historical facts or esoteric speculations. She only looks literally at the meaning of the words of the Bible. From those words, she show that the Master is channeling very practical rules, easy to follow, to help us remember our immortality NOW. Emma attracts our attention on the practical immediate meaning of the Gospels. She shows the evidence that we are at every moment connected with the Source of all Power, omnipresent, omniscient and omnipresent, now and forever...Because of her sharpness and the depth of her understanding, her books are not an Easy read...Her "Radiant I AM"Self Treatments Including the Radiant I Am, is a pure gem. It is a less than 20 pages booklet revealing the open secret of the generation of "realities"...But to perceive it's practical meaning we need to go through the filter of thousands of years of false beliefs and erroneous habits..."Spiritual Law In The Natural World" is the perfect introduction to it and much more...It is clear, practical. It is a "Course in miracles" organized in 12 lessons; six about the building of our inner world and six about the way our inner world generates what we consider to be the"outside reality". The book ends on this : "Realization is the ultimatum of all study, and the test of it is "instantaneous healing". Thus we can see where we stand, and whether there is any further need for work..." This sentence evidences the clearly PRACTICAL objective of the teaching : "Go and perform the miracles of Jesus Christ!"After the 12 lessons of this "Course in creation" we get as a bonus several spiritual treatments created by Emma. They may sound too simple to be true but try to think literally about this one : "The sweet Spirit of comfort is all around you. It is through you and in you. You are bathed in Spirit..."Is there best place to be in? If we could just "realize" that it is where we already are...

completely satisfied with service and delivery of product - everyone seeking to learn more about spiritual awareness should purchase the books written by Emma Curtis Hopkins, Well worth the investment

A beautiful Writer she offers deep goodness and healing.

nonsense--in the first person plural.

Worth reading many, many times. Full of full-bodied statements that hit a cord I didn't know could be hit. This book has a very high frequency. It's now in my top ten.

The runs written by the father are over classified (rapids listed as Class IV are probably Class III). The runs written by the son are sometimes slightly under classified (rapids listed as Class IV might be IV+). This means when you read a description and it lists a rapid as Class IV you have no idea what to expect. This book is extremely outdated and there are better options available.

This book is a fantastic resource with almost everything you want or need to know about the areas covered. My only criticism would be that the maps could stand more detail, and be smaller scale. Regardless, it clearly identifies the access locations for rivers, all the major rapids, and how to go through or get around them. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in paddling in the western Carolina's.

Actually now know the author and he hand carved a walking stick for my husband who does trail work in western NC

Great book!

Best padding book I have ever had.

Very descriptive & helpful resource for finding the kind of paddling water you are looking for in the Carolinas. So glad I bought this book!

Older book, but it still contains very useful information.

Great

Review

“David Helm has written the most helpful, concise, and useful book on expository preaching I have ever read.”―Matt Chandler, Lead Pastor, The Village Church, Dallas, Texas; President, Acts 29 Church Planting Network; author, The Mingling of Souls and The Explicit Gospel “If I were teaching a preaching class and could assign the students only one book, this might be the one. It’s a rare find that both introduces a topic to the novice and instructs the experienced. David’s humility convicts, rebukes, instructs, and encourages me as a preacher. I pray it will do the same for you.”―Mark Dever, Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC; President, 9Marks"This little book is simply outstanding. It’s the best short book on preaching I’ve read. Helm’s advice is unfailingly wise, theologically informed, and extremely practical."―Kevin DeYoung, Senior Pastor, Christ Covenant Church, Matthews, North Carolina“David Helm’s skills as a preacher and his vast experience as a teacher of preachers make anything he says on this subject of great value. But I read him with greatest appreciation for what is most clear among his commitments: ‘Staying on the line, never rising above the text of Scripture to say more than it said and never falling beneath the text by lessening its force or fullness.’ Here is not merely skill and wisdom, but also faithfulness from which the truest treasures of preaching come.”―Bryan Chapell, Pastor, Grace Presbyterian Church, Peoria, Illinois“Helm has given us a finely wrought and utterly compelling brief on what needs to be understood and done in order to faithfully preach the Word. This is an important book.”―R. Kent Hughes, John Boyer Chair of Evangelism and Culture and Professor of Pastoral Theology, Westminster Theological Seminary“In this compact book, David Helm distills key principles and insights that have encouraged many at the Charles Simeon Trust preaching workshops. I have seen men reengage with the hard work of preaching preparation as David has taught this material. May that same result be multiplied by this book.”―Paul Rees, Senior Pastor, Charlotte Chapel, Edinburgh, Scotland“I love to see people’s shocked responses when they learn that expository preaching is the first of the ‘9 Marks of a Healthy Church.’ This priority is affirmed and explained in Expositional Preaching. David Helm issues a stirring challenge to get the message clear and right. May God be pleased to use this book to help you preach faithfully for the health of the church and the glory of God!”―H. B. Charles Jr., Pastor, Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida

Expositional Preaching is part of the 9Marks Building Healthy Churches series, which is comprised of 10 books detailing what Mark Dever and company consider to be the marks of a healthy church. David Helm, who is lead pastor at Holy Trinity Church in Chicago and is the chairman of the Charles Simeon Trust which promotes practical instruction in preaching, is a logical choice to author a contributing book on the “mark” of expositional preaching. The definition given for expositional preaching is “Empowered preaching that rightfully submits the shape and emphasis of the sermon to the shape and emphasis of a biblical text” (p. 13). Helm quotes Charles Simeon as one who understood what expository preaching is:"My endeavor is to bring out of Scripture what is there, and not to thrust in what I think might be there. I have a great jealousy on this head; never to speak more or less than I believe to be the mind of the Spirit in the passage I am expounding" (p. 12).The four chapters progress from identifying mistakes preachers often make in their attempts to contextualize, to considering the challenges and demands of exegeting a text, to understanding a text in light of the entire biblical canon, to preaching in ones present context (see p. 13). Helm spends much time on contextualizing (pp. 16-37, 106) which he defines as “communicating the gospel message in ways that are understandable or appropriate to the listener’s cultural context…[it] is concerned with us and now. It is committed to relevance and application for today” (p. 16). While contextualizing has its place, much danger lurks, Helm admits when the preacher allows his immediate context to control the meaning of the biblical text (p. 17). Helm identifies three specific dangers when contextualizing gains the upper hand. He calls these the dangers of impressionistic preaching, inebriated preaching, and “inspired” preaching (p. 17). Chapter one is dedicated to exposing these dangers. The way forward, Helm believes, is to begin with the biblical text and discover the intended meaning of the author for his original audience (p. 39). How to do this is described in chapter three. But Helm is not suggesting the preacher’s job is done at this point. Now that proper exegesis is complete, and the meaning of the biblical text is known, the preacher must move to contextualization in which Scripture is made relevant for the immediate audience (pp. 57-59). How to do this is the subject of chapter four in which the author leans heavily on Paul’s encounter with the philosophers at Athens in Acts 17, and other evangelistic sermons found in Acts (pp. 63, 92, 93, 95-96, 103).It is in chapter three, dealing with theological reflection, where Helm goes astray, in this reviewer’s opinion. The author, in this section, supports the Christocentric hermeneutic which teaches that Christ is found in every text of Scripture and, therefore, all preaching is focused on Christ, no matter what is found in the text. He supports this thesis that “all the Scriptures concern Christ” (p. 62), from his mistaken interpretation of Luke 24:25-27, 44, 45 (pp. 62, 67), his failure to recognize the distinction between evangelistic sermons found in Acts from preaching/teaching within the body of Christ (pp. 16, 92, 93, 95, 96, 103), and Charles Spurgeon’s endorsement (p. 64). Helm is honest enough to offer an opposing view, via James Barr (pp. 66-67), but does not engage with Barr’s legitimate concern. While Helm recognizes dangers in this approach (pp. 79-82), he insists, based upon this theological grid and faulty exegesis (see pp. 68-69, 79, 82, 109), that what he has so accurately confirmed in the first two chapters is to be overridden. That is, Simeon’s preaching philosophy to bring out in Scripture what is there and not thrust in what one thinks should be there (pp. 12, 101-102) is overruled by Christocentric preaching. Under this methodology, Christ is found in every passage of Scripture and the preacher’s job is to somehow find Him even when He is totally absent by any true exegetical standard. Once found, the preacher’s task is to conform his sermon around this supposed discovery and make a straight-line toward the gospel. This so-called “Christ-centered preaching” is controlled by a preconceived theological construct, eisegesis and the preacher’s imagination, not by the actual biblical text and authorial intent. To say that this reviewer is disappointed that 9Marks made Expositional Preaching its book on preaching is a massive understatement. If 9Marks has joined the redemptive-historical hermeneutic, Christocentric approach to biblical interpretation, then this errant understanding of Scripture is now spreading beyond its Reformed – Westminster Seminary roots. And if so, this is a sad day for those seeking to know and proclaim God’s Word.Expositional Preaching, How We Speak God’s Word Today by David Helm (Wheaton: Crossway, 2014) 125pp., hard, $14.99Reviewed by Gary E. Gilley, Pastor-teacher at Southern View Chapel

This is a book on preaching you should pick up once a year just to refresh on trying to preach the text faithfully while still being gospel-centered and applicational.

This isn't a bad book. The theology is sound. They love the Word and they love Christ. I just think that there are other books that do a better job conveying of what 9Marks is trying to say. I would recommend reading "Preaching" by Timothy Keller and studying the inductive method with someone like Hendricks.

This book is as helpful as it is concise. The most common problems of preaching are soundly corrected, and solid direction is given to expound God's Word and apply it faithfully.I'll be making this required reading for my preaching class.

Filling a great need for our day! The writing style is easy to follow and entertainingly helpful. The author does a great job of using his experiences in very practical and telling ways that expose the most common mistakes made by us preachers of the word. We have all made many mistakes preaching, but I bet you have as I, made or are still making many mistakes listed in this book, yet unawares. I found myself repenting and kicking myself at many points. This caused me to dig deeper into the proper ways to exposition than I honestly expected.9 Marks, as always, helpful, word centered and glory of God focused, for the good of His precious church!

This book is short and concise, yet very deep and practical. It will greatly help you grasp the heart of expository preaching and aid you in the practice of it.

Great reminder to remain faithful to the studying and proclamation of Scripture.Helm provides great encouragement and practical tips to ensure the expositor handles the Word rightly, leaving the reader motivated to study God's Word thoroughly paying careful intention The the Authors main purpose for writing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have been preaching for many years and it called me back to my purpose for preaching. Easy to follow and put into practice.
