This book was GREAT! I had no idea that Elizabeth was such a proactive (and prolific!) Queen. There is so much that we don't know about our English history (or at least we didn't go this far back when I was in school). I love how Philippa Gregory incorporates her research into her novels. She brings her characters to life.

I don't know what genre to place this book in. Stripped to its essence, I would have to say that this is a romance. It just happens that it takes place in the historical setting of the battle for the English throne known as the war of the roses. As such, it contains all the elements of an adventure novel as well as some aspects of a mystery. It also contains aspects of magic and witchcraft. What this book is not, and never professed to be, is a history book. The White Queen is the story of Elizabeth Woodville, the commoner and former Lancaster supporter, who married the newly crowned Edward IV from the house of York. They married in secret, for love, and kept it quiet for a time because marriages during that time among nobles were arranged for political alliances. Told mostly in the first person from Elizabeth's point of view, the book starts in 1463 when Elizabeth first meets Edward until 1485 when Edward's brother Richard III holds the throne. The book was meticulously researched and contains an extensive bibliography (for anyone wanting to read the history.) By using the first person, Ms Gregory is filling in the thoughts of Elizabeth as well as the behind the scenes dealings in the king's court. These are not historically accurate, nor were they ever portrayed as such. One can only guess what went on behind the scenes as no historical documents exist to tell us, and with all the backstabbing going on I am not surprised that nothing was put in writing.Another nice touch added by the author was the introduction of magic to the story. Elizabeth's mother claimed to be descended from Melusina, the water goddess who was half woman and half fish. Melusina's legend exists in many cultures and is probably most well known as that of a mermaid. This legend is woven into the events of the war of the roses masterfully, and Elizabeth and her mother are both accused of witchcraft at one point or another. Whether to believe or not is left up to the reader. If you enjoyed Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon as I did, then I think you will also enjoy The White Queen. They are both similar in that they are first and foremost love stories. The main difference is that there is no time travel in this book. Instead, the reader is transported to the fifteenth century and sees life through the eyes of Elizabeth Woodville.

Typical Gregory fashioned telling of the story of the York Queen and her rise from widowhood. Unfortunately it is this rise that cause so much turmoil within the York house. The War of the Roses/Cousins War is complicated enough, but then the York divided upon itself due to petty jealousies supposedly much caused by this secret marriage. Elizabeth was not someone to be trifled with and when wronged, her curses were sure to cause the torturous death of those that perpetrated them. but they tended to have a potential side effect of putting someone she loved in danger as well. Not sure if some of her problems were self fulfilling prophesies. This story did not have the emotional detail that some of her other stories. It was definitely based a bit more on fact and since that story was full she did not embellish as much -- and that part of her amazing story telling was missing

This was the first I've read by Philippa Gregory. (Yes, really!) I enjoyed the glimpse back into fifteenth century England a lot. This is the first book in Gregory's Cousin's War series, known to history buffs as the War of the Roses. This is also the first book I've read set in that time period, and Gregory successfully drew me back five and a half centuries. What a fascinating and tumultuous time during England's history. The viewpoint character is Elizabeth Woodville, who became Queen of England when she married Edward IV. I became absorbed in Elizabeth's life and that of her mother, and their fascinating blend of Christianity and witchcraft. Were they really like that? I don't know, but Gregory certainly convinced me. My only complaint is there were several longish passages of exposition where the viewpoint character relayed historical events in an almost textbook-like fashion -- albeit an interesting textbook! -- and I found myself skimming to get to the next time Something Happened.I absolutely loved the section dealing with the Princes in the Tower. Elizabeth was the mother of those princes, so we get to know them through a mother's eyes. Gregory does not buy into the commonly held notion that they were murdered by their uncle, Richard III. In high school English class I wrote a term paper on the subject, and I agree with her. She states her case convincingly.Even with the long passages of History Telling, I enjoyed the book enough that I bought the second in the series.

This delightful coming of age memoir reminds me, in an odd sort of way, of the Oscar winning movie, "Lady Bird."The subject may be baseball and the person going to the Hall of Fame may not be an artist, but this is a story about growing up, learning from your mistakes, and being able to laugh about it in adulthood. Most athletic autobiographies are nothing but thinly disguised blueprints to pick up lucrative speaking engagements to the "inspirational" sales crowd.Chipper Jones, on the other hand, turned down money to complete his career with the Atlanta Braves. His hardscrabble years in rural Florida, his crying wish to go home after a semester at a difficult private school, his hazing in the minor leagues as the Braves Golden Boy and Number 1 pick, and his leadership of the Braves to their World Series Title in 1995 and almost two decades of division winning baseball is inspiring reading.[Hansen Alexander's latest book, an Amazon exclusive, is a biography of Roger Clemens, ONE BRAVE MAN.]

I've read most of the books written about the Braves teams of the 1990s and early 2000s, and this is easily my favorite. Chipper is brutally honest about himself and his feelings on any number of issues (including teammates and rivals). This book actually has insights that surprised me, such as Bobby Cox quitting in 2008 because he couldn't stand working with Frank Wren (they talked him out of it). There is some locker room adult language in the book, so if you're put off by that I'd recommend Of Mikes and Men: A Lifetime of Braves Baseball. Other than that, this book is an easy and very interesting read.

I totally enjoyed this book. My younger daughter and I went to so many Braves' games during these years , Spring Training games, the last game in the old Fulton County Stadium and the first game at the "TED". Reading Chipper's book was like hearing from an old friend and reliving a lot of very precious memories since I lost my daughter five years ago to cancer. Anyone who loves baseball would enjoy this book. But, if you are an Atlanta Braves fan, your library is not complete without it.

Chipper Jones was born to play baseball. Based on his remarkable career he received the highest recognition the sport has to offer as an elected Hall of Fame player. Importantly, the narrative lets Chipper say how it was from his perspective. He made some poor decisions, yet he offers his point of view willingly. He also expressed regrets and gives several apologies. In an era marred by steroid use Chipper played honest, and his achievements all came the right way with hard work. As a rare one club player he was the longest serving part of a very special Atlanta Braves dynasty.Nicholas R.W. Henning - Australian Baseball Author

Somehow reads exactly as you would expect Chipper to talk and act. Full of cockiness and bravado, but also just enough self deprecation to keep it bearable. So many good stories and insights on his career and fellow players. The stuff on the big 3 pitchers is worth the purchase alone. His youth and minor league recollections were surprisingly highly interesting and a major plus. As for the personal life stuff, I thought it was not really all that exciting, but I suppose he would have gotten a lot of flack had he left the soap opera stuff out. I am a huge braves fan and thought the world of chipper on the field and in his interviews, and this book is a great and highly entertaining telling of a great career. Golden if you love the Braves, but I am certain any baseball fan would enjoy, including Mets fans!

This is surprisingly well-written. I never read an autobiography so quickly, nor could I put it down once I started. I'm not sure if that's due to the fact that I remember growing up and paying attention to everything Chipper was talking about or if it was due to his straight-forward, keep-it-real approach (I'm sure it was both). Most autobiographies come off as too self-righteous or they reminisce almost exclusively on the "glory days" (which is standard and to be expected with autobiographies), but most fail to even touch-on the not-so-glorious moments - let alone go into detail about them with any sense of self-accountability. Chipper does this and does it well. In a time when ego and self-righteousness seems dictate the behaviors and actions of one's own character, Chipper's acknowledgement of his personal failures and willingness to hold himself accountable is refreshing.

This was an excellent book that I could not put down. You don't have to be a Braves fan or even a Chipper fan to enjoy this book. It was well written and really gives good insight on what it was like for Chipper growing up as a elite young prospect, going through the draft process and realizing his dream of playing professional baseball. He doesn't sugarcoat anything and owns up to his mistakes in his personal life which I admired. I especially enjoyed his stories of his fellow teammates and what it was like playing and goofing around with Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz and Bobby Cox among others. A must read for baseball fans and a great biography!

I've lived in Atlanta for 37 years. I remember hearing about Chipper Jones when he was drafted and then waiting for him to clear the minor league system. He was worth the wait. His personal troubles aside, he played the game the right way. The team winning was always his focus. Thanks for a great 19 years and for a nice read on a warm summer day.

As someone who keeps up with the WN's translation, I can say this was absolutely worth reading. It becomes apparent very quickly that while the underlying story is the same, the author added new events and subtly changed others. I never felt like I was rereading the WN word for word like I did with the Overlord LNs (though that comparison is probably unfair.)Second, the translation was done by somebody who clearly knows how English works. Don't get me wrong, I'm VERY grateful that S. does the translations, but the poor English often left me scratching my head as to what's going on, or I had to reread a line several times before I understood. Not so with this LN.To new readers, I think if you enjoy 'transported/reincarnated in a new world' stories like Overlord or Mushoku Tensei you will enjoy this. I can't recommend it enough. If I have to criticize anything though, it's that the English translation now makes it sometimes unclear just who is talking from the Youth Squad. Liza was generally serious lines, Pochi ended in ", Nanodesu" and Tama ended in "~?" I understand those last two don't have good translations into English (Pochi's line was changed to ", sir") but it might just be something I have to get used to like I did in the WN.

This is a fun entry in the so-called *Isekai* - or summoned to/trapped in another world - genre. A computer programmer named Ichiro is enduring a "death march" at his company working on games that are on a deadline and must be finished. Meaning work till you finish the task by said deadline, thus the term "death march". As he is dealing with the last-minute changes and fixes to games, made all the harder by another employee quitting suddenly, he falls asleep. He is surprised to find himself in the most wondrous dream imaginable. He is in a world with such vivid views and the RPG mechanics similar to the games he was working on are in play. Granted, the dream kinda sucked at first as he was being attacked by these lizardmen-type of creatures and the wounds hurt. But once he won that fight, things took a turn for the better. He meets some cool people, including a young woman named Zena. Of course, Zena's affection for him is awkward since while his dream self is 15, his real age is 29. He also is really high-level and basically stronger than the equivalent of Superman in this dream. In fact, fans have jokingly called him "fantasy-Saitama" and *One-Punch Man* fans will get the reference. He goes on to enjoy his time in this fun dream world when the truth eventually hits him. This *ISN'T* a dream. He really truly *is* in another world. Of course, once he realizes this, he has so much to consider. How did he get here? How does he get home? *Can* he even get home? He doesn't know the answers to these questions, but he resolves to a) find the answers, and b) calmly live his life here in this world until he can find the answer. If worse comes to worse and he is stuck in this other world, he will simply do his best to live his life out as happily as possible. And that's the basic tenor of the story. I mean, yes, there is action, quite a bit in fact, but this gentle and outright just *fun* tone is the norm (and continues to be, from what I've read online). He meets and helps save folks, but the emphasis is on the heartwarming aspects of the story. Camaraderie, kindness, redemption, so forth. *THESE* are the crux of the tale. I mean, he saves some persecuted slave girls that become *not* his love interests, but his children basically. This certainly is a unique take on things, not so much in the bare bones of the plot, which is fairly common in such *Isekai* stories, but in the emphasis being on the heartwarming and the fun travelogue types of stuff. I really enjoyed it.To add to the really "awwww" moments is some really lovely art, especially in the color page inserts. The hues and the bright colors and such are just wonderful. More so, the skin tones and the details on the characters look more "real" than much other art. Truly great stuff. The inside illustrations are not as good as the absence of the colors takes away something from from the charm.Whether it be Satou (the name Ichiro adopts), Zena, the slaves they save (persecuted peoples who are abused unfortunately in this slave-holding culture), the inn staff, and such, there is a decent amount of characterization for each person introduced. Given how very important characterization is to me, this is only a plus.In many stories, the camaraderie is a key thing to my personal enjoyment, and the characters' in this story having such heartwarming moments, love for each other, so on, makes it a must-read. I Highly Recommend it.Rating: 5/5 Stars.

I've read a handful of these "summoned to another world" series, but this is by and large the best one I've read, and I'll tell you why: it's the main character. There are several tropes that these isekei heroes fall under, but Satou isn't any of them. He's not some oblivious harem protagonist, he's not some virgin that gets flustered by even glancing at a woman, he's not an extreme introvert that can't hold a conversation to save his life, and he's not an idiot to fully flaunt his power to try to force his new world to fully comply to the expectations of his old world. He's calm, cool, collected, and intelligent. He's also compassionate to those that struggle, even though he doesn't go out of his way to find them (as you would expect of a normal human being). He's honestly one of the most realistic everyday hero of any of these stories I've read so far. He just wants to have a pleasant journey through this new world of magic and mystery and along the way gets caught up in these situations, or runs into people in serious trouble, and ends up saving a lot of lives and hardships.Overall, the theme is pretty easy going, but there's plenty of real conflict along the way, which makes the story truly interesting.
