Father of the famous essayist, critic, and caricaturist Max Beerbohm, Beerbohm senior had spent some time in Patagonia. There, he wrote this book and illustrated Lady Florence Dixie's RIDING ACROSS PATAGONIA, an equestrian classic that is still in print. Fortunately, Nonsuch Press resuscitated this early travel book which is well worth reading for aficionados of the Patagonian wastes.In WANDERINGS IN PATAGONIA, Julius Beerbohm writes about an overland journey he took between Puerto San Julian in the Argentine state of Santa Cruz to Punta Arenas in Chile (which he calls Sandy Point). A rank amateur, Beerbohm had no previous knowledge of the land, its flora and fauna. Fortunately, for the most part of the journey, he travelled with several old hands at ostrich hunting: the memorable pro Isidro, the Frenchman Guillaume, and the Austrian Maximo.Most memorable are the several chapters in which the group is stuck on the north side of the Rio Gallegos (near the present day site of the city of the same name) which was experiencing what we would call a hundred-year flood. The group splits up, with Julius and Guillaume venturing a dangerous crossing, which almost drowns our author. Then, when they finally arrive in Sandy Point, the local prison -- along with its military guard -- mutinies, gets drunk, and takes over the town, killing many of its citizens.Beerbohm's two encounters with Tehuelche Indians near the Rio Chico and the Strait of Magellan are well written, with some excellent characterizations.When pushed to it, Beerbohm is also capable of some memorable prose. In Chapter V, he writes:"It seemed like an unfinished portion of the globe, the very skeleton of a landscape. The outlines were there, indeed, the framework of the intended structure. There were bold hills, sheltered valleys, isolated peaks, deep basins; but over all was silence and desolation, all was empty and void. The finishing touch was withheld, -- the last touch which was to have softened and modulated those rugged contours, clothing their barrenness with verdure, filling the dry basins with clear water, and bringing life and gladness to what was now lying in sad and eternal deathliness."The only negative note -- other than the book's slow start -- is Beerbohm's rather obvious racist attitudes toward peoples with whom he was not familiar, notable the Chilotes (inhabitants of the island of Chiloe) and the Indians of Tierra Del Fuego. Having just finished E. Lucas Bridge's great book, THE UTTERMOST PART OF THE EARTH, in which both groups were extolled, I tend to trust Bridges more. He actually lived with them.

This was a gift for my hockey-crazed four-year old nephew, along with the alphabet hockey book. He is always on the go and it is difficult to get him to focus on anything for a long period of time. However, after giving him these books, he immediately sat down and looked through the whole book! I like that it has a short rhyming sentence for the younger child, but there is more information on the side of each page to engage him in when he gets older.

This sturdy board book is colorful and fun especially for a 2 year-old boy in my family daycare who is obsessed with hockey right now. We keep it in a special place in our cozy book corner for him. Another 4-year old who is a hockey team drop-out at the moment is rebuilding his interest in playing and this book is a great help and encouragement. I gave them their own copy for Christmas and it has a place in the 2 year-old's crib at home.

my 2 year old has all of the alphabet ones and loves them. i thought this would be just as great, it skips some numbers as the numbers get higher which irks me. if you are trying to teach counting you cant skip numbers. otherwise it is great about sports information.

I was given Z is for Zamboni as a gift a few years ago. This book completes the set!!!! For the hockey lover in your family no matter the age!It's informative, interesting, and the illustrations are BEAUTIFUL! This is a hardcover book but it also comes in a Board book version that is a great gift for a toddler.

A beautifully illustrated book that my sons want to read over and over again.

Okay for younger kids who are learning to count, most appropriate for 5 year olds. Not much hockey information for older kids.

This book has been tremendously helpful as I am rehabbing from sciatica. What's great about it is I am working muscle sets that are very weak and there are new aches and pains that accompany each stage of working through that. I've been doing the body posture and re-alignment exercises from this book and it helps relax the areas that PT exercises have "re-awakened" painfully. I am also getting more benefit from the PT exercises themselves because the anatomy lessons inside this book help me imagine the movements in language that might be more helpful to you than what your PT, doctor etc use. My last doctor visit, the staff noticed that I am moving much more freely and seem much more relaxed now. I told them about the book and the osteopath said he's going to check it out. I'm also memorizing some of the breathing language and relaxation exercises for students I work with. Even if it doesn't help them, I know it will help me help them.* update: I have rehabbed from the sciatica and have only had one time that started that little pinpoint area that indicated trouble, after blizzard snow shoveling. I made sure I went into the vagus nerve reset position for 45 min each day and took it easy physically for a few days & no problems. I do the daily exercises recommended for sciatica and I look forward to it each day after work. In the meantime, I've been working on expanding the repetoire of movement/alignment exercises. Examples: climbing stairs by seeing hip/knees as rocker arms on oil derrick and as I reach w/ my arms overhead, leading w/ my pinkie finger instead of index-thumb. I'm moving w/ more ease, have more energy at the end of the day (many w/ over 16,000 steps) and people keep asking me if I've lost weight. I put that down to the realignment that is happening through the posture correction that happens moving mindfully. I also go on You-tube and type in the names of the exercises and many are right there. Give the book a try, it stands up to the test.

I'm a lay person with no exercise training, who's been in physical therapy for a couple years. I'm very hypermobile and Eric Franklin's products have been amazing for me. This book's size is overwhelming, but as I've started reading about ribs, breathing, and the nervous system, I've felt like my physical therapy is making more sense. It's easy to work on one area that's stuck or giving you pain, and this book emphasizes holistic, whole body happy movement. I love that he covers so many muscles and parts of the body and then summarizes how the whole body works together, so you can "get more" out of your workouts & understanding of posture.I cannot recommend Eric Franklin products enough, because they're phenomenal.

Dance is my hobby and I am not in medicine, yet this book is still understandable. The book has the feel of something written for physical/occupational therapists to get new imagery from. My own use of this book is providing breakthroughs for me and solving some nagging alignment problems that experienced instructors could not really fix. My appearance, stamina, and comfort in dance and life have improved in the two months I have owned ths book.

Many years ago I got my BFA in Modern Dance. If only we had this as our book for the year long class in kinesiology! There is such depth of understanding of how we move and how to connect the mind and the body to go WAY beyond what you thought was possible. I wonder if this had been my introduction to kinesiology way back when - perhaps I would still be dancing today. I find it invaluable to teaching Pilates and Yoga today.When you get it, you have to sit with some paragraphs and let it sink in. Then read it many more times to see how it is interwoven. No superfulous words, no junk thrown in. It all is purposeful. Beautifully done.

I'm a visual person, and though this is pretty technical stuff, it is helping me to "speak with" my own body and help re-align myself. I really appreciate his information, but would like even more pictures!

Eric Franklin takes the works of Mabel Todd (The Thinking Body) and Andre Bernard (Ideokinesis) to another level. He references them and has adapted many of his exercises using their concepts. The sketches are delightful and whimsical, but he also encourages you to develop your own imagery. The book is filled with anatomy, alignment, and exercises. He encourages you to do your own self-evaluations with developing self-awareness. A great book that I repeatedly use along with his other books.

Useful for cuing my physical therapy patients and very detailed!

Matt Dunn sees humor in everything, it is a great gift! His new book “ At the Wedding” is as funny as always but very serious too addressing complexities of modern world relationship. I always thought of Matt Dunn as a brilliant author but now I think he is a philosopher too with a great sense of humor!

Funny, insightful, sweet, and romantic. The characters were quirky and the story was non predictable and interesting. Bravo Mr. Dunn.

A lovely little story about a couple that has been together for 10 years and she finds herself pregnant. Since he hasn't proposed she plans a wedding in Spain where they met 10 years ago to the day but doesn't tell him. Only a few friends are invited and know about it. Also backstories on the invitees and what happens when the "groom" finds out he is there for a wedding - his own.

Story was ok. It didn't make me want to read at every available minute of the day. I did finish reading it but wasn't thrilled with the story.

Matt Dunn is an author that just makes me laugh, his writing is so real, yet so full of warmth... I adore the books I have read of his.. from my favourite ‘A day at the office’ to ‘Home’ to ‘What might have been’ so I knew I was in for a literary treat with ‘At the wedding’ and I read most of it smiling or chuckling...So it starts with a proposal... not just any proposal... heavily pregnant Livia telling her beau of over 10years that in fact their romantic weekend away is actually going to be their wedding....Poor Jed isn’t so enamored with changing things up... Why fix what ain’t broke after all?‘At the Wedding’ had me laughing... from the dysfunctional friends to the disappearing bride and groom to the fabulous Spanish backdrop... it’s Human folly at its most endearing ... was there a great reveal... no - angst?... no; yet cringe worthy real moments aplenty smashed together with personality explosions makes this special.Was it my favourite Matt Dunn - probably not... but it was a wonderful heartfelt, fun, beautiful read...4.5Stars!!

Each person at this secret wedding is dealing with issues relating to relationships and where they fit in in their life.Liam - a playboy - preferring married/taken women so as to have no emotional ties to anyone.Patrick - burnt by divorce - with a girlfriend almost the same age as his daughter.Rachel - compromiser in her relationships - trying to find herself and be happy on her own without having to settle for second best.Jed - the reluctant groom-to-be - scared of marriage due to his past and worried about getting married.Livia - the pregnant bride-to-be - wants the security of marriage especially now that she's 6 months pregnant.All of them boarded flights to Barcelona with just the thought of the wedding that lay ahead (okay not Jed as he was going to celebrate his 10 year anniversary - clueless as to the wedding). But as the weekend progresses each one makes a personal journey and in doing so, sort of let go of some of the things holding them back.A lovely read. Small group of well developed characters. I really enjoyed this book.

She had planned everything, she even invited their best friends and his brother.The only problem is Jed’s cold feet.It’s hard to imagine that these two could have been together for ten years without talking about Jed’s issues with marriage.It’s also hard to believe that Livia thinks springing a surprise wedding on him is a good idea.In the background we’ve got the characters:Rachel—Livia’s friend who just broke up with her boyfriend of two yearsPatrick—mutual friend of Livia and Jed—still damaged from his divorce and dating Izzy who is less than half his ageLiam—Jed’s brother—billed as a “lady’s man” but he’s actually pretty awkward around most womenIzzy—Patrick’s 23 year old girlfriend—loves to shop, has zero in common with Patrick, seems to make him reflect on his life and drive him crazy in equal partsMost of the story is about relationship issues. Some parts of the story are a real stretch to find believable, I guess I can’t mention my example without calling it a spoiler.That said, it’s a light, quick read. It’s interesting to see each of the characters trying to admit to and overcome their own issues.I got to read an early e book edition through NetGalley. Thanks!

The book description says the book is the “Salem Witch Trials meets Mean Girls.” It’s one thing when friends or reviews describe a book as a mash-up, but when it’s in the book description itself, I get a little skeptical. But Mean Girls is a viciously funny movie (“Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by Regina George?”), and I’ve been intrigued by the Salem Witch trials for most of my life. It comes with the territory when growing up less than an hour away from Salem. I’ve visited Salem several times, and I’ve both been in and directed the play The Crucible. But it was the added info that author Adriana Mather is a direct descendant of someone involved in the witch trials that made the prospect of reading the book even more intriguing. Would she make the book be all the things—funny, biting, satirical, and spooky—implied in that mash-up?Absolutely!The story starts with Samantha Mather—a direct descendant (like the author) of Cotton Mather, a minister who supported the witch trials—moving from New York to Salem with her stepmother while her father is hospitalized in a coma. She moves into the old house where her father grew up, a place where strange, ghostly things start happening. In school the next day, her last name alone attracts negative attention among other students, particularly a collection of four girls and a boy known as the Descendants. Their family trees include ancestors who were accused, tried, and hanged as witches back in 1692. No wonder they don’t like Samantha.She gets bullied, and as a teacher, I was slightly put off by how the school population (students and teachers) is somewhat complicit in the bullying. The school administration and her stepmother chalk it up to Sam’s somewhat troubled past. But this is fiction, and as the plot got more mysterious, spooky, gripping, and scathing, it bothered me less because there’s a really powerful and important message buried inside the intricate, twisty plot. But before I get to that message, I want to talk about the characters and plot.Sam is a great narrator. She’s smart, snarky, and stubborn. She lacks some self-confidence because of all that’s happened to her, but she’s also got a strong sense of what’s right and wrong. As her situation at school gets worse, and she is ultimately accused of being responsible for some freaky and dangerous things happening at the town, all she wants to do is help everyone by solving the problem—a curse on the descendants (including herself) of those involved in the witch trials.The supporting cast is also well-developed. I like that the Descendants have distinct voices and personalities, and Susannah—the first to reach out to Sam—was my favorite of that bunch. As in many YA books, there’s a kind of love triangle with Sam and two boys: sweet, noble neighbor Jaxon and proper, mysterious Elijah. I only loosely consider it a triangle, and it was never a distraction, but it was quite the contrary, as both relationships were different, unique, strong and necessary to the story.There are at least two big mysteries, and it was fun watching them converge and diverge throughout the plot. The stakes are clearly raised through the book, and though I sniffed out the ultimate villain, that villain’s true motivations surprised me. I didn’t want to put the book down when I had to, particularly through the climactic confrontation.What elevates this book toward best of 2016 status is the message. Sam is trying to stop a curse that has been repeating itself in Salem since the witch trials, but the unsubstantiated finger-pointing that occurred then has repeated far too many times in history. Whether it was the “Red Scare” of McCarthyism in the 1950s (the inspiration for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible) or the profiling of different ethnicities in many eras of history including the present, the hysteria is unnecessary. And it happens in high school also if one “popular” group of students socially banish others for no reason other than they’re different. Even without witchcraft, this happens, and hopefully well-written books like this can help point out why that’s dangerous while doing so with an enjoyable story too.This book exceeded my expectations, especially after reading a few books that didn’t. Maybe my reading dry spell was a curse, finally broken by How to Hang a Witch and its FIVE STAR rating.

Just finished Heather B Moore's Condemn Me Not: Accused of Witchcraft so I thought I'd give this book a try. Both were priced right for an introductory read of a new author. At least they were new to me. And both were written by descendants from people at the actual Salem witch trials. I guess that was another thing that drew me to this book. I have to disagree with the reviewer who complained of the plot. I thought that was one of the book's strong points. The story was very well told, logically moving from one episode to the next. At least it kept my interest, but maybe I'm too easy.Another complained about repetition which probably was a just complaint. It was the same kind of event--a confrontation or rejection or supernatural experience--from chapter to chapter, and Sam the protagonist's reaction was pretty much the same from chapter to chapter. Kind of reminded me of Book I of the Quijote where the Don moves from chapter to chapter getting beat up but still moving on unaffected, whereas in this book Sam gets scared or rejected and is still pretty much the same person she was at the beginning of the book. But the book doesn't pretend to be high brow literature, but neither does the Quijote for that matter. Both are stories well told with twists and turns to keep the interest going. The Sancho Panza here is a very polished ghost who's pretty much taken in stride.Chapter 30 explains how the ghost does some of his supernatural stuff, a delayed explanation that adds its own level of suspense to the story. Unlike the Quijote I, this book stays on topic. There are no annoying side shows like shepherd stories to distract from the main story line, which might have happened if the author had taken time to explain more about the supernatural, or the fall-out from the witch trials, or--the most troubling omission in this story--why Sam the protagonist never did any homework and never suffered any consequences at school.In the end, the book gives some sympathetic treatment to the ancestral Cotton Mather, but there's no reconciliation with the descendants of the condemned, the girls who attempted to bully Sam the protagonist in high school. But the most obvious question in all this was neither asked nor answered: who in the hell names their kid 'Cotton'? Would he have felt such a need to prove himself by fighting imaginary witchcraft if he had been named Benedict or Arnold or Donald?

This is not a "how to draw" book. It is a set of exercises. I wanted to add a new book to my cool "how to draw" collection . This is a huge disappointment. It's a fitting present for like a five-year old child. A preview image like the ones Amazon had before would have been helpful.

It was worth the buy. My bipolar cousin really enjoyed it and it really helped him stay calm instead of frustrating him. Thank you
