NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER"A classic in the making - the kind that will land on the bestseller list...and stay on shelves for years to come."―Boris Kachka, New York Magazine"Field fuels this aching, lyrical memoir with frankness about her emotional childhood, her conflicted relationship with the late Burt Reynolds, and how acting helped her interpret life in all its pain and beauty."―Entertainment Weekly"A memoir as soulful, wryly witty, and lyrical as it is candid and courageous... Eye-opening and deeply affecting... Arresting in its dark disclosures, vitality, humour, and grace, Field's deeply felt and beautifully written memoir illuminates the experiences and emotions on which she draws as an exceptionally charismatic, empathic, and powerful artist."―Booklist p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Times} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "Field holds nothing back...This powerful, timely narrative resonates with pain and triumph." ―Library Journal, Best Books of 2018 p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "A complex cri de coeur [and] shockingly frank...A rarity in the world of celebrity memoirs."― p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} USA Today"Clarity and Grace Shine Through the Darkness in Sally Field's Memoir... If you come to "In Pieces," expecting to meet a plucky Sally Field desperate to be liked, you will not find her. Written by the actor over seven years, without the aid of a ghostwriter, this somber, intimate and at times wrenching self-portrait feels like an act of personal investigation - the private act of a woman, now 71, seeking to understand how she became herself, and striving to cement together the shards of her psyche that have been chipped and shattered over the course of her life..."In Pieces" serves as a kind of tribute to women - her mother in particular - and others who would guide and protect Field throughout her turbulent childhood and an adulthood fraught by personal and professional upheaval."―New York Times Book Review"Award-winning actress Sally Field could have written a typically dishy Hollywood memoir. Before proceeding with this review, I want to share this:“Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.” - Thomas JeffersonDemakis, Joseph. The Ultimate Book of Quotations (p. 506). Unknown. Kindle Edition. Why did I use the above quote? Well, the word honesty sums up my reaction after reading (and listening) to Sally Field share her life with us, the word honesty comes to mind, front and center.Let me interject this: I got this book largely because the star of Gidget was my standard for gauging every woman I dated. Yes, I realize how naiive and chauvinistic this sounds. But it is honest.See, even though Gidget lasted only a year, I fell just as in love with that actress as my older brother loved Annette Funicello. Funny thing is, Ms. Funicello really was the wholesome, God-loving angel she came across as, while Ms. Field was more identical to Sybil, the fictional character she starred as. THAT is the beauty and worth of Fields’ autobiography, “In Pieces.”BLUSH FACTOR: Be forewarned, you will not be wanting to read this to your prayer group due to the number of f-words and honest language. I do heartily recommend discussing it with others though, especially in AA or similar settings. Note also there is frank discussion of child abuse she suffered and other similar issues. As I stated, you probably will not want to read this aloud to young ears.Despite, or perhaps because of, my learning who the real Sally Field was, I loved this book. I woke up early to download it today and read it for an hour or so. Then, went back to sleep. Then resumed reading, and listening to the Audible edition as I readied for, and drove to work. This is THAT engaging.ExcerptTo avoid any spoilers, I have kept this excerpt extremely short.‘…But I wanted to be a child—and yet.I’m naked. How did I get naked? Did I do that? Did he? He pulled the plastic bags off the dry cleaning that hung in the closet with the sliding doors, the sliding doors with big mirrors on them. He wraps the plastic bags around me—just so. Through my legs, around my chest. He lays me down on the white shag carpeting in the big bathroom and gets into the adjacent shower.“Okay, Doodle, let me see. Move.”The merengue. I am learning to do the merengue. The dance he showed me one night in the den with everyone watching as he instructed. I practiced in the den and now I’m practicing here.“Come on, let me see.”I push my face down into the carpet that smells of dust, trying hard to thrust my butt high in the air and down and side to side. I want to be good, but more than anything I want it to be over. And some part of me feels I’m in danger. I hold my face deep in the shag. Hide in the carpet. Not to be at all anymore—and yet. And yet…This man’s focus is totally on me; at this moment, I’ve won him. I am flypaper, the sweet sticky temptation, and he’s caught…’Field, Sally. In Pieces (Kindle Locations 838-847). Grand Central Publishing. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEA definite eye-opener. Five stars. Do yourself a favor and buy add the Audible edition to your purchase. This autobiography is beautiful, sometimes hilarious, and haunting all at the same time.Five stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. With your help, my improvement will help you and me improve book reviews on Amazon. Together, you and I can build a great customer review process that helps everybody. Will you join me? It is people such as you who have helped me improve over the years. I'm still learning, and I have a great deal yet to learn. With your help, I'll improve every day.One request: Be respectful and courteous in your comments and emails to me. I will do likewise with you.Thank you so much for indicating if this review helped you, or for your comment.

Wow! I actually read this engaging, honest and illuminating memoir in one sitting. The brutal honesty and objectivity that Ms Field displays in openly discovering and relating her life-long battle with self-esteem and why she's the person that she is is refreshing and helped me to see some of the same traps I've also fallen into in my own life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has come from a family that hides it's secrets or where abuse was present. I really admire Ms Field's life-long struggle to become the person she always knew was in there somewhere.

Never can imagine what people have gone through until you hear their story. I had a horrible childhood, five sister's that got through it too, without them I don't think I could have made it out sane, maybe I haven't! This book opened my eyes to lots of angels to see life's problems,I guess we all have crosses to bare. I want to thank Sally for writing this,so talented but not without problems herself, love her!

Sally Field’s memoir IN PIECES was seven years in the making. She wrote it without the help of a ghostwriter. The book is quite revealing, intimate, and depicts incredibly haunting childhood memories that are revealed for the first time publicly. My guess, she must have taken one deep breath before she decided to come forward about what’s in the pages. She’s indicated, that she wasn’t sure she would be able to proceed with it. It is upsetting to know that this successful woman who clearly took the reins and made a career for herself from a very young age and has maintained it, which is no easy feat in this world and especially in Hollywood, but that something as horrific as childhood sexual abuse was considered so shameful that she had to keep it a secret from her own mother until so late into her adult life. Given that one of the most prominent news stories today is up for debate, perhaps, not so surprising, that it is still a challenge for a young woman to be able to come forward without fear of backlash.Field’s book is remarkable. How she handles herself, despite numerous setbacks, her ability to take care of herself and navigate a male-dominated profession, and most of all, to go after what she wanted without the assistance of two reliable parents. Now that I know her full story, I greatly admire her, not only for her shiny awards but for her personal triumphs.

OK let's start off with a frank admission... I don't read books to feel bad. I read for entertainment and when I read about actors it's typically to hear interesting, insightful and often humorous back stories about their work and career.THIS IS NOT THAT TYPE OF BOOK.Ms Fields is a splendid actress obviously had a very challenging childhood. I won't go into details but this book is really about her family and personal problems. She seems to have never had a thought or feeling that she doesn't want to spend copious amounts of time analyzing. I felt like I was sitting in on a session with her shrink. I'm sorry to be so insensive but there has to be a point where you stop dwelling on the past and .... move the hell on. She doesn't seem to celebrate the amazing good fortune she has enjoyed. Just a haze of regret and pain.Anyway, I really wanted to know more about her relationship with Burt Reynolds (of whom she does not paint a pretty picture) and the many fine actors and directors she has been privleged to work with. No mention of Paul Newman or Robin Williams as costars. Not even much about Daniel Day-Lewis. Lots about Mom and Dad and Jocko and... so on.So if you're looking for a good cry this one's for you. If you're looking to feel better later - go elsewhere.

The first book in a collection by different authors, all about “Funeral Fakers”. Out of work, or disillusioned actresses being hired to professionally mourn at funerals. Kitty is a down on her luck actress who moved home after being “blacklisted” in LA. After finding a discarded want ad, she applies to “Exit Stage Left”. Being hired to work a funeral as the girlfriend of a recently deceased gentleman, she goes to meet his family and learn to be the woman she is impersonating. Along the way, she begins to suspect foul play. She explores, the mystery unfolds… My only complaint is I want to know what happens to Kitty and Seth!!! :)

Very intriguing concept for a book, beautiful city, fun characters! Who knew there was such a thing as a professional mourner? In this book, an out of work actress moves back home and gets a job being a professional mourner. She plays the girlfriend of the deceased and ends up discovering he was murdered. I will definitely be reading the rest of this entertaining series!

I loved this story! Imagine, a job as a mourner! Quirky characters and fast past interesting storyline. I could not wait to get to the next page! Lots of twists and turns. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!

Funny.Intriguing. Totally different kind of cozy mystery.I enjoyed it.Actress, has been Kitty, to funeral faker mourner is fun.Pleasant surprise actually

Great idea with laughs and intrigue all rolled up together. A clue all is not quite what it seems leads to questions and suspicions. Guess who did it!

Who ever came up with this idea is a genius. The concept is hilarious. Characters are wonderfully written. Would like to see what happens with the two main characters.

The first book by the author, and I enjoyed it.Unusual plot.Good characters. Left me wanting to read more.5 StarsI recommend this.

This is a delightful mix of humor and seriousness. The plot involves a twist that leads to a mystery solved in an unusual way. Enjoy!

I love Paul Doherty's stories. Especially the Athelstan series. This book did not have one character you could cheer for. Obviously true to the times but not my favorite read from Doherty. If this becomes a series I don't believe I will purchase any future stories.

I found this book boring. I was expecting a much better read from Doherty. No character to really hang onto.

Excellent story, well written, I'm looking forward to next book in the series

Thank you to NetGalley and Severn House Publishing for a digital galley of this novel.Fans of Paul Doherty's historical mysteries might want to be aware that this first book in a new series was not, strictly speaking, a mystery novel. Yes, after about 65% of the book had gone by there was a locked room mystery for one of the main characters, Christopher Urswicke, to solve but those questions never translated into a "mystery novel". From experiences in the book I knew at this point that it would be just as likely for any of Margaret Beaufort's followers to just step up and admit to her they were the killer. Or even Margaret might have been capable of the deed. No tension, not even any positive feeling that solving a mystery was a major focus in the book.To me this novel was historical fiction, full stop. I happen to love reading historical fiction so why did I not enjoy this? My answer is that there wasn't enough emphasis put on one specific character so that I could build a relationship with that person. Margaret of Beaufort, Countess of Richmond should have been where my attention was pinned. Instead there were other characters who had equal standing in the story with no one person taking the lead part. My favorite character was Christopher Urswicke but even he felt under developed. Maybe that's the key to my not enjoying the book, it felt as if no person was developed enough to take center stage in the story.Another aspect of the story that I definitely did not enjoy was the vast amount of attention paid to the horrible death scenes that happened as a result of this revolt and fighting. Characters couldn't just walk by a wall or a gate, no, they walked by a wall or a gate being fully described as an exhibition place for all the horrors men did to the physical bodies of their enemies. I'm pretty much able to take some vivid descriptions but this book had my stomach roiling throughout. So, so, so many words focused on the desecration of the human body. For me it was excessive. This was not a success for me and I was disappointed. I had expected one thing but got another. I appreciated the information about Margaret Beaufort and this month of May, 1471, during the winding down of the Wars of the Roses but it wasn't worth having to wade through all the muck, blood and gore.

This doesn't know what it wants to be- is it historical fiction, is it a historical mystery? Obviously, the latter incorporates the former but mystery fans might find themselves arguing the there isn't much of a mystery here. If you're a fan of the Tudor period you might find this factually challenged. If you aren't familiar with it there's a lot of information, some of which overwhelms the narrative. Margaret Beaufort and Christopher Ulswicke are well written but the rest of the characters are not so clear. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I had high hopes for this and I expect others will enjoy it more than I did.

This may be a really confusing review... which is probably good because I'm really conflicted on exactly how I feel about Dark Queen Rising.I picked Dark Queen Rising fully expecting more murder mystery than historical fiction, but I personally wouldn't have categorized it as a mystery at all.Although it didn't have the mystery I was looking for, overall, I did actually enjoy the story. It begins with Margaret witnessing a horrific slaughter in what should have been a place of sanctuary. (I mean, how could you go wrong from there, right?)The story goes back and forth between Margaret and her trusted henchman, Ulswicke. Ulswicke was definitely my favorite character in this book! He's funny, smart, and scary all at the same time. He also came across as more of believable/relatable character than Margaret (which seems a little odd now that I'm sitting here writing it down for all the world to see. I mean, he kinda kills some people... weird). At the beginning of the book, there are a lot of people thrown at you and it got confusing for me trying to keep up with everyone. Thankfully, it doesn't take long for the main characters to surface and it gets easier to follow who's who, who did what, who's on who's side, etc. There was also a handy dandy list of key players at the start, so that was nice! There were times when it seemed like there was too much detail and it slowed the pacing down for me. Other times, I couldn't seem to put the book down because I was so into it! (Another sign of how conflicted I am with this one!)I could totally see this being made into a movie. And I'd definitely go watch it... and I'll probably be reading the next book in this series when it comes out... So a definite "okay" pick...I'd recommend it for fans of historical fiction, especially fans of fiction during the War of the Roses.Thank you to NetGalley and Severn House for providing me with a free digital copy of this book. This in no way influenced my review.
