Review

“Keay’s panoramic vision and multidisciplinary approach serves the function of all great historical writing. It illuminates the present.” —Thrity Umrigar, The Boston Globe “A handsomely published book with over sixty wonderful relevant maps, charts, and tables, and a plethora of beautiful illustrations, many of them in color. . . . Keay deals well with India’s long and intricate history. . . . Keay’s treatment of early India is often sprinkled with his passionate eloquence, which is also evident in the rest of the book. . . . One of the best to be published in the field for some time and could be read to great advantage by students of Indian history and by those who enjoy history in general.” —Bawa Satinder Singh, The Journal of Asian Studies“A superb one-volume history of a land that defies reduction into simple narrative . . . Without peer among general studies, a history that is intelligent, incisive, and eminently readable.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“Ambitious . . . [Keay] carefully uncovers India’s prehistory—a great challenge given that the ancient Indians left no texts—and skillfully describes the evolving Indian concepts of kingship, statecraft, and military strategy.” —Lucian W. Pye, Foreign Affairs“A comprehensive account . . . A robust book.” —Amit Roy, India Today“It is hard to imagine anyone succeeding more gracefully in producing a balanced overview than John Keay has done. . . . One can only hope that Keay’s India will be widely read, and its lessons taken to heart.” —William Dalrymple, The Guardian (London)“Sweeping from the ancient brick cities of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, built in the Indus Valley around 2000 b.c., to modern India’s urban middle class armed with computers and cell phones, this erudite, panoramic history captures the flow of Indian civilization. . . . A banquet for connoisseurs and serious students of India.” —Publishers Weekly

This book spends as much time with historiographic issues as it does with history (about 1/3 of each chapter is devoted to detailing the various literary, archaeological, and other sources for the history and the problems with such sources). This tends to interrupt the narrative flow, and the grand arc of the story in the history gets lost. This would be a perfect volume for someone who already had a firm grasp of the general outline of Indian history and wanted to fill in the details (in exhaustive detail). I would not recommend it for someone setting out to gain a basic knowledge of Indian history or someone looking for a "readable" history. It is a useful compendium nonetheless.

This is quite a unique book in the sense that it accounts for all the history of India (and in the final chapters of Pakistan and Bangladesh) from the very beginning to the last 2000's in a rather detailed and chronologically organized manner with clear language and explanations, and many pictures to accompany the text. Precisly what I was looking for!In spite of some strange (and poor jabs) at Ancient Greek language and values (e.g. the inferiority in the expressiveness of Ancient Greek compared to Sanskrit while contrary to Modern Greek, Hindustani was unable to draw from Sanskrit to modernize the language to the admission of the author) I would most definitely give this book top marks and would whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to read about the history of the Indian subcontinent.

Comprehensive history of India over 5,000 years to present. Excellent, but could use illustrations of the many shrines and temples mentioned. Author frequently switches back and forth between time periods without out clear delineation. Many of the places and leaders mentioned have multiple names, and the author confusingly switches among them while describing the period A directory would be helpful, likewise a dictionary giving the translation of the many Indian terms used would be helpful for reference when the words are repeatedly used. Maps presented are helpful given the many changes in boundaries of the territories, states and countries over time, but more detail on the maps would be helpful.

If all of your knowledge about Indian history is derived only from text book, then this is a great read to expand your knowledge and develop newer and more accurate understanding of Indian history. The greatness of the book is in it being most honest and truthful about history which is largely based on evidence gathered from numerous sources like archaeology, literature, linguistics, cultural studies and vast amounts of existing older historical writing. Most Indian history writing tends to sway between extreme view points of either Indian nationalism or one of imperialistic partisanship. This book is quite honest and stays somewhere ideally in the middle. In general author restrains himself from jumping to conclusions based on vague evidence. However, lack of evidence doesn't mean no story or less interesting story. Largely relaying on evidence which is sometimes very obscure author using his intellect often makes very mature and educated conclusions and speculations about the actual course of events.Keay is whimsical in some of his portrays of persons or events sometimes contradicting familial perception; some of which might well be true when looked at it from an absolute sense. For example though he refers to MK Gandhi as 'Mahatma'(great soul), Keay tends to think by no means Gandhi was most influential in the cause towards Indian freedom. Next, the role of revolutionaries in Indian freedom struggle who are idolized by many nationalists are brushed aside as terrorist activities in an absolute sense. Figures like Bhagat Singh etc dont even get a mention in the book! (I am not being critical of this). Other things, hes seen critical of the Brahmanical authority and caste system which has dominated most of Hindu society and religion based bloody conquests by medieval Muslim kings.Author spends good time narrating the ancient and medieval Indian history. The modern portion especially the Indian freedom movement is somewhat brisk and (even misses some details) than I would have liked it to be; yet I liked his narration of Indian political history after Independence(1947) portraying the influential characters of Indira Gandhi, ZA Bhutto and Mujibur Rehman doing justice to real state of events. But for a good read on modern Indian History I am told Ramachandra Guha's 'India after Gandhi' is a good book. In this revised book, he even covers the most recent communal tensions of Ayodhya, Mumbai etc and the Afhgan/Taliban war against terror.I was initially inclined towards buying different books for ancient, medieval and modern Indian history, but since I didnt find good recos for each separately,I decided to try this one-in-all book. Given the obscurity and lack of direct evidence associated with Indian history, one has to say its a great piece of work with all five thousand years of Indian history condensed into one precisely well written , highly recommended book.

John Keay does tremendous justice to about 5000 years of history of the Indian subcontinent in a matter of 640 pages, starting from the Harappan civilization to the final decade of the 20th century, covering political history for the most part but pausing thoughtfully on issues of culture, myth, language & values every now & then.I think that Keay's style is definitely engaging & non-partisan. Unlike some of the other reviews, I did not think that this book is entirely dry & mirthless. I think that there are many instances of having a little fun at the expense of a king here & there, a shahenshah later on & then men from his own country.I think what this book really does for me is separating the element of myth from what is history. For example, both Ashok & Akbar have legendary statuses associated with them - though as Keay reveals, some of such popular imagination is indeed deep rooted in facts, but certain extrapolations of such persona are just stuff of popular imagination.I thought that the challenges in this book are actually challenges of Indian history/geography itself. Barring certain periods, it is very fragmented. It is also debatable exactly what constituted "India" in different periods of history & which dynasties, kingdoms & men played a greater role in defining what we mean by it today.I would recommend this book very highly to anyone who wants summary content on Indian history.@souvikstweets

This is a fantastic book with pictures and descriptions of over 500 plants. I brought my copy years ago for about $20 but it is apparently out of print.Barbados uplifted about 600,000 years ago and is isolated in the Atlantic Sea. It is composed of a mixture of continental sediment and limestone similar to the central plane of St. Croix. Since there was never a land-bridge to the mainland or any other island, most of the plants were brought by Amerindians from South America starting 1500 years ago. These facts make it similar to St. Croix so it is not surprising to find many of the same plants on both Islands and the other Islands of the Lesser Antilles. The book provides medicinal uses for many of the plants and substantiates the claims with 66 scholarly references. No lover of tropical plants should be without this guide. Unfortunately, like many valuable books that are out of print, it might be cost prohibitive.

Very informative.

This book follows the road trip of one Jeroen Van Bergeijk who decided to drive a Mercedes to Western Africa and sell it there for more than he could have gotten for it back home. Apparently this was a popular ploy for a while there and one has to nod in wry amusement at the cheekiness of the plan - and to the clever people who first thought it up.As the book progresses we get the usual lessons in Third World insanity/stupidity and yes, all the cliches about almost unavoidable petty corruption are proven true. The author intertwines notations about the state of play in Africa, foreign aid, local friendliness as well as the aforementioned local crookedness and jumbles it all up along with discussion if his car and the people he meets along the way. The entire brew is then stirred with the authors occasionally stilted prose and, alas, too little discussion of the natural landscape of the places he travels through and in the end produces a very brisk read of what isn't exactly a book of War and Peace dimensions in the first place.A cheery read that skips a lot of the moralising I was afraid of and if you can pick it up cheap it will serve you well as long as you read it while you are in a light hearted and relaxed mood.

An excellent read - a story from back when a person (in this case, an ex-police officer) could still drive across Europe, then have his car shipped across to Africa and then drive cross country to Burkina Faso, in order to sell it to someone, used! The story is a riveting adventure, very well written with a great sense of humor and prose by the author.

If you're into adventure travel, and approach both experiencing it and reading about it with a bit of intellect, and with curiosity about the peripheral / background details of an adventure, you'll love this book. I saw one or two reviews where people offered opinions that the author went into too much detail regarding the Mercedes factory, etc, but, to me, these were integral elements to the overall story. Outstanding book, and a great read.

This author has a great voice and this book really hit my wanderlust spot. I could envision his own journey though his amazing articulation and his upbeat spirit. The characters he meets are mysterious and inspiring, I actually contemplated trying this journey on my own...and still am! Total inspiration and somewhat reminiscent of adult novels by Roald Dahl, like "Boy" or "Flying Solo" - excellent travel writing! Pick it up...

Arrived in good condition. No problems

Good travel writing makes you feel like you are experiencing a given place at a given time. It allows you to feel the contours of a city, meditate upon the moods of a different culture, and smell the sunset of a distant land. I was really hoping this book would do that. I've traveled in Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Togo. I've even lived in Ghana. When I read the blurb about this book, I was ecstatic. When I saw that the book was only 200 pages, I shrugged my shoulders. When I sat down and read the book in one night and didn't feel like I had really caught a glimpse of any of those places - even through the eyes of the author - I was disappointed. What I find to be especially dismaying is that the author is a good writer; he definitely has it in him. He even knows how to tell a good story, but there just isn't one. There is no moment where you are concerned about his situation, empathetic to his problems, or really concerned about his decisions. It is just a point A to point B to point C kind of story. The most compelling parts of the book have nothing to do with the journey - they have to do with his research into the history of his car. His discussion of Robert Pirsig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" vis-a-vis his Mercedes is interesting at first, but turns out to be a bit contrived and irrelevant to the story.I'll put it this way: if you want to read something that is quick and pretty fun, go for it. If you want a Paul Theroux-like experience where you can put the book down a smarter person, stay away. I'm not saying that every travel writer needs to be compared to Theroux, but if you go somewhere as interesting as Mali or Burkina Faso you should have something more interesting to say than just "I got hassled at the border and was annoyed by tourists at the hotel."

A very pleasant jurney, well more correctly also a "final journey" with and for a car that ends its service in Africa. The book is very well written. Go for it.

Nice light travelogue. I liked the back and forth between the Mercedes' history and the journey through Africa. No preaching, no bleeding heart liberalism. Just a good honest read. But then the Dutch are great people to begin with.

I never put spoilers in my reviews.J D Robb (Nora Roberts) is one of the few authors I reread. Everything about the "in death" novels is quality writing and defies genre labeling. From the relationship between Dallas and Rourke, the mystery/thriller storyline, an extremely strong female role model, the secondary characters, the setting, well, everything, you just can't wait for the next one. Robb shows that a woman can be strong and capable despite soul crippling events in her life. I have a mantra, "just step over it and move on." Eve Dallas personifies this. It doesn't mean you never think of it or that you forget but life goes on.Dallas "stands for the dead," they are hers, no matter who or what they were in life. To her it's almost a sacred trust and she is uncompromising in her pursuit of justice for those in her care.I think even most men would like these books, if for no reason than to see how women would like to be treated.Read, enjoy, repeat.

I was rather uncomfortable with the overall subject matter of this book which centers around the use of an extremely toxic “super date rape drug” used by two young men in a game...of all things. The atrocity is compounded by the fact that none of the victims survive. That being said, this is a very well written work with excellent plotting. The interaction between Lt. Eve Dallas and the rest of the regulars who make up the cast of these novels is excellent. This is about the 46th novel in this series and with the notable exception of a couple of previous entries; this is an excellent read which moves the entire Eve Dallas sage forward. For me one of the high points in this novel was the verbal interaction between Eve and her sidekick, Peabody. The conversation was highly entertaining and these verbal exchanges are some of the best examples of this authors work. The author also did a wonderful job of making the evil guys extremely loathsome in several different ways. I love to see really disgusting bad guys get what is coming to them. This was a good read and an excellent addition to this series.

This series is as addictive as Zeus! In this book, #13 of the series, a woman falls from the upper floors of an apartment building right at the feet of Dr. Louise Dimatto. Eve had met her previously and had given her clinic a half million dollars from an account Roarke had set up in Eve's name.Anyway, the investigation quickly shows that two men are slipping drugs to a date - drugs that make them sexually aroused and that lowers their normal inhibitions. Then the women are raped. The first time, the killer didn't actually intend to kill; he accidentally overdosed her, then threw her body off the balcony. For the men - boys, really, just 22 years old - it's a game for points and bragging rights, which makes Eve angry and determined to take them down. All the gang is here in this one. Charles Monroe and Dr. Dimatto hit it off. MacNab and Peabody settle their differences and agree to date exclusively. Eve gets rundown and sick before the case wraps up, so Roarke calls Summerset in to dose her with his special formulas. Of course she fights it and Roarke has to forcibly administer the meds - like a recalcitrant 2-year-old.I love the mutual friendly/hostile relationship with Eve. They trade barbs because their personalities and egos won't allow them to admit to kindly feelings for each other.Commander Whitney takes a personal, hands-on interest in the case, going into the field with Eve and her team. And in the end, after both killers are disposed of, Eve and Roarke her off for a 2-week vacation in Mexico. Some great dialogue as always. Eve and Peabody:"Amused, Eve started the scan again. “I was single a hell of a lot longer than I’ve been married. I never stooped to cyber-world.”"Big deal when you’re tall and thin with jungle-cat eyes and have a sexy little dent in your chin.”"You coming onto me, Peabody?”"My love for you is a fearsome thing, Dallas. But I’ve given up dating cops.”********Eve and Nadine:"“You, Lieutenant Locked Lips, are going to, of your own free will and out of a sense of camaraderie, give me data on an ongoing investigation.”"That’s right.”"Just a minute.” Nadine’s face disappeared from the ’link screen for ten seconds. “Just wanted to check with the meteorologist. It appears, despite indications to the contrary, hell has not frozen over.”"Pardon me while I fall into an uncontrollable fit of giggles. You want the data or not?”*******Roarke and MacNab"Roarke leaned forward, gently patted McNab’s knee. “You’re in love with her.”His jaw dropped. The beer in the pilsner slid dangerously toward the edge as it tipped. Roarke righted it. “I am?”"I’m afraid so.”McNab stared at Roarke with the expression of a man who’d just been told he had a fatal disease. “Well, hell.”******Eve and Peabody and MacNab"“You don’t need to diet, She-Body. You are a just-right female.”"McNab?” Eve said."Yes, sir.”"Shut up.”"It’s all right, Dallas. We’re a couple.”"A couple of what? No, don’t tell me. Don’t talk to me. Don’t talk to each other. Let there be silence across the land.”4.25 stars!

First, my hat is off to so many of the reviewers of Ms Robb's books -- spot on and so helpful when I debate whether to spend $7.99 on a novel I could read free at a library. What is not to like about this series? Nothing. It is all superb. Great dialogue: often sarcastic and humorous (as it can be when dealing with such tragic events). Eve's and Roark's relationship: feisty, respectful, hot, tempestuous, nerve-wracking, vulnerable and human. Eve's crew: flawed people with hearts big enough to face the horrors of homicides and never stop stopping the bad people. Writing: bang on and such a relief to read a book with little to no English grammar issues. Eager anticipation fully satisfied when I tuck myself away from reality for a while and get lost in the travails of 2059 Earth.
