I have no idea how to make soup. I purchased this book to learn some classic recipes and teach myself the basics. It does give you a lot of "how to" information about different ingredients, how to cut/chop them, what things can do for flavor, etc. It is a good learning tool, however I've made about 6 soups (so far) and they all seem to be ...lacking flavor. So far I have found that each of them need more of something. It offers a good base for soups and stews I think, but overall the recipes are somewhat labor intensive (if you follow the instructions) and need to be doctored. I'm not counting the recipe that was so bad that we dumped out after 3 hours of prep and cooking and ate hotdogs instead. I think that was just a flavor preference. I'm going to keep using this cookbook and if I find other recipes that are amazing (as is) I may update my rating but so far I'm not terribly impressed.

A few years ago my husband scheduled to undergo a surgery that put him on a completely liquid diet for a full month, and since I had zero experience making soups or broths, I bought this cookbook so that I could provide a variety of liquid foods. This book proved to be invaluable to me during this period, although I was limited at that time soups that were either pureed or wouldn't suffer too badly from being food-processed within an inch of their lives, regardless of whether or not the recipe call for it. After my husband's recovery, however, (which went very smoothly and without a hitch, thank you), we discovered a dazzling array of new soups and stews through this cookbook, many of which have become much-beloved staples in our household. Not only does this book teach you how to make soups, stews, and chilis, but it also has product review sections so you know what’s best for your recipe, and more that teach you how to clean and prepare ingredients that you may otherwise not be familiar with. This is a standard thing for Cooks Illustrated to do, but since I was not subscribed to their magazine at the time, these informative sections really blew my mind! This cookbook has taught me so much and brought so many new, amazing foods into our lives. I recommend it to absolutely everyone, and I’ve even started giving these away to friends who are getting married. If you’re thinking about getting this, you ABSOLUTELY should!

I love Cook's Illustrated books. They are thorough and take the guess work out of a lot of recipes. Beware that making soup is complicated! And many of the recipes require fresh produce (such as fresh corn), which we can only get a few months out of the year. I like the book, but only when I am in the mood for an afternoon in the kitchen.

Last night I made the "Pork Stew with Brandy, Fennel, and Prunes", page 235, using the library copy I had borrowed. This morning I ordered the book. Need I say more?

I liked this cookbook. The recipes are pretty easy and classic. The soups are tasty and healthy to make... Worth the price!!!

I wanted a good basics for soups and this delivers big time. I did not believe you could make beef soup without bones, roasting etc. Their beef broth was the best I have ever made or bought And it was so easy. The book was worth the cost just for the shortcuts. Buy this!

Fantastic cookbook. Answered a lot of my questions on browning, freezing soup, and slow cooker vegetables getting mushy.

I think I own just about every single book that came from Christopher's kitchen. And every recipe is awesome. I never have to worry whether the recipes are wrong or inaccurate. All recipes are incredible. All.

I purchased this book for my teenager (girl) for Christmas. She requested a book on how to draw manga/anime characters. I returned it because there are several nudes drawings - not your average "this is how to draw a body", but sexy poses of teenage looking characters. There were also several drawings of girls in mini-skirts doing high kicks with a close up of the crotch area. Very anatomically correct, inspite of the skimpy undergarments. Parents (and lovers of modesty) beware...

I was really surprised when I was actually able to get this book in my hands!!! I waited so many months before I could order this book! Any way, this book is comprised from three different artists', Hikaru Hayashi, (my fav by the way) Takehiko Matsumoto, and Kazuaki Morita. These three artists' teamed up to compile a book with there own renditions of stetching manga. Basically this book is a giant rough sketch book showing you the basic shapes they used to get their art work to look the way it does. This is actually helpful in alot of ways. It expects you to have some basic knowledge of anatomy and proportions, so that you can be thought to stylize them, or even deform them.A part I really enjoyed is the step by step drawings shown by the hand of the experts. Also, at the end, they provide guidelines on how to properly color your finished pieces.Overall, this is a must-have for any artist, or sketching enthusiast, regardless of his/her taste for Manga.

An educational and sometimes engaging history of number theory's biggest problem and the many efforts it took to solve. Singh typically writes his unique histories for the casual layman (I've also read "The Code Book"), which makes them as accessible as possible. However, if you have much of any background in mathematics, you'll find a few of the explanations annoyingly simple. Just skim past those and keep on.

I could write a long paragraph explaining my love for this book but I think all the other (great) reviews show that pretty well. I usually read books slowly, about a few weeks to finish one. This book was an exception, I read it within a few days! As a math major, it gave this feeling of excitement that I haven't felt before. So one of the classes I decided to take this semester was Elliptic Curves!! If you're a math major, pick this book up ASAP!!! And if you're not, still pick it up as it tells the story of one of humanities greatest achievement of the 20th century.

I'd like to think of myself as good/above average in Math but never would I think that reading a book about an theorem unsolved for centuries and think I would either be remotely interested or able to follow the storyline. Singh has a unique ability, however, to distill the complicated to a very interesting and easy to understand storyline- so much so that you the reader honestly will feel as though it was obvious and you could in fact 'do' much of the mathematics involved. Makes a potentially dry topic into a great story - and deceptively teaches you a lot along the way. great read.

My first Singh book was "Big Bang" which was also excellent. He is phenomenal at weaving a massive story over a period spanning multiple millennium in a few hundred pages. He gives short bios on each major player, and tells interesting stories about their lives. His method keeps you on the edge of your seat, and what others would think would be a boring subject is indeed a page turner!Some of these mathematicians committed suicide, some were killed at an early age (Galois, mathematical genius dead at 20), others had to disguise their gender (Sophie Germain) due to discrimination. It's very interesting to learn about each character.Altogether a highly readable book on a journey to solving Fermat's Last Theorem.I read it in about 3 days (it's 300 pages), and maybe 15 pages discuss math that I don't understand (modular forms and elliptic equations), but it's very minimal and doesn't get in the way. It was mostly about the lives of these mathematicians and their struggles.If you are interested in learning about the lives of Pythagorus, Euclid, Euler, Gauss, Germain, Galois, Wiles, and countless others...Check it out.On a side note I would love it if Simon Singh wrote a book on the history of evolution. He is a master at simplifying very complex subjects.

Fermat's Last Theorem is the greatest riddle ever challenged by mathematicians spanning different centuries and different concepts and that's how this book is all about. Fermat's Enigma is truly one of the most dramatic reading where various mathematicians in real life are on a quest to solve the world's greatest mathematical problem where n represents 3, 4, 5...no solution. It has been quite as dramatic as reading a best-selling cult classic novel you all heard about but more importantly, it has given me several purposes that mathematicians tried and tried until they succeed in solving the greatest math problem we know as Fermat's Last Enigma. Of course, there has been some downfall faced by mathematicians, especially the men behind the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture, but this book I read is all drama without the fuss and thanks to such wondrous sources, I am more than welcomed to recommend reading this fascinating book to almost everyone who has a deep interests in mathematics. Solving Fermat's Last Theorem literally holds a very special place in the history mathematics and no matter how many mathematicians sacrificed themselves to solve this problem, only one had triumphantly solved it with the help of his trusted people in his life. Students, like us, are truly fascinated about what sort of mysteries lurking around the history of mathematics but this Fermat's Last Theorem we all read about in this book really hits the spot, literally.

I first came across "Fermat's Enigma" years ago while completing a Masters degree. I was doing research for a History of Mathematics class when this book grabbed my attention while sitting on the library book shelves. I checked it out, started reading and just found myself totally engrossed in the story, almost from the get go, and finished it in two days.The story of the solving of Fermat's Last Theorem contains almost all of the features that draw us to read books in the first place. What is super-interesting is this: though the story takes place within the mathematics field, it contained elements of fraud, murder, suicide...all in the pursuit of a seemingly elusive proof, based on an equation that, at first glance, seems so simple. And because almost all of us are familiar with the Pythagorean Theorem from our school days, the fact that over 350 years and hundreds of different mathematicians were needed to come up with the elusive answer just makes the story that much more fascinating.I now teach college mathematics and recently, noticed that one of my students was reading "Fermat's Enigma." It brought back fond memories and I desired to check it out again from the library to give the book another read. This time, it was not available...so I did what the student did: ordered my own copy from Amazon. It arrived today and I'm excited about having an entire weekend to once again visit the cast of characters and the engrossing saga that evolved over the centuries.Fantastic read! And highly recommended!

I am now considering going back to school to get a Master's Degree in Nursing Informatics. I already have my BSN. I feel after reading the first few pages of this book I think I will. Thanks for the book. Great price AND in great condition.

Yes, this book was an easy read, but technology is moving at a rapid pace, and although this book was made in 2013, a lot of the information included in the text are already outdated. Some of the URL addresses included in this book also don't exist anymore. Some topics were also just passing fads, which just show how outdated this book already is. And as I do understand there are some people who don't know how to make a powerpoint or use a word-processing system, I don't see a reason for each of those topics having their own chapters. I think this book focused more on describing the current technology, rather than the impact and role it has towards nursing.

This is absolutely one of the worst textbooks I have ever had to read and my professor assigned every chapter! This is a supposedly 2013 copyright, yet some information is out of date and not useful. This book has no glossary and no clear definitions given for many, many important terms and concepts. This was a struggle to read. Virtual simulations are discussed barely and that is the new technology many emphasize in nursing education. The information on personal health records and EMRs was sketchy and confusing and not fully explained. This book is just awful and tortuous! Many concepts are confusing and poorly explained such as nursing informatics, health informatics, consumer informatics, which is a subset of which, etc. Just explain and define it without trying to confuse and trick the reader. This is a great book for a professor to concoct trick questions on tests and confusing, complicated questions which are irrelevant in the real world. I know--my professor used the standardized test bank that came with this book. Horrible!!

I found this book to be very helpful in understanding computers in relation to nursing. I found that it explains things really well and makes the learning easier & it explains things in a way that I found very useful. This is one of those books that I will not sell back.

This book was a mandatory purchase for one of my college courses. It is a straightforward, to-the-point book. I have taken informatics classes in the past where the books contained pages of wordy, repetitive script. Not only that, this book is light and easy to carry. The other books were cumbersome and heavy. I recommend this book to those who want well written, straight and focused information. This book will not put you to sleep.

As the plot summary indicates, Helen Watt, an aging British historian and expert in Jewish studies, is invited by a former student to assist in the evaluation of some manuscripts found during the renovation of a house in a London suburb. Helen, suffering from Parkinson Disease, needs help in studying what she realizes is a treasure-trove of documents, and calls upon a colleague to recommend a post-graduate student to assist. Enter Aaron Levy, a young American secular Jew who has run into a roadblock on his own research attempting to find a “Jewish Connection” in the writings Shakespeare. Helen and Aaron find their collaboration both uneasy and deeply rewarding.Further dramatic tension is provided by the fact that Helen’s ploy of having the college (from which she is about to retire) acquire the documents for conservation and archiving immediately raises the specter of academic competitiveness. It soon becomes obvious that the papers include the writing of Ester Velasquez, the ward of the blind Rabbi Moseh HaCoen Mendes, a Portuguese Jew. Having fled Portugal for the relative safety of Amsterdam after the Inquisition killed his parents and blinded him, Rabbi Mendes has been sent to London to try to assist the struggling Jewish community there. The existence of a female scribe writing in 17th Century London just before plague and then fire decimated the city is remarkable enough. However, as Helen and Aaron continue to delve into Ester’s writings an incredible back-story emerges. This woman was not only a scribe, but a philosopher as well, determined to connect with some of the great – and, in the opinion of most other people of that era heretical – thinkers of her time. As the story weaves back and forth between Ester’s traumas and those of Helen and Aaron as they seek to discover the reality of who this woman was and what she really represented (before being “scooped” by other investigators), great depth and richness of thought evolves.As mentioned in my opening comments, this is not a book I could recommend to someone seeking light or trivial reading. However, it is profound, fascinating and deeply engaging for anyone who is concerned with the fundamental issues Rachel Kadish so brilliantly addresses through the words and thoughts of her extraordinary characters.

There are long passages in this book, letters written by Ester to the philosophers of her day, in contemplation of the likely impossibility of the existence of God. At one point, Aaron Levy, the present-day scholar, wonders if he is even able to understand her missives.And this is my problem with this good book. The writing was beautiful, but dense and often cryptic; I sometimes had trouble understanding it, and many of the letters and scenes went on for too long.And yet I highlighted 27 excerpts, whether for the beauty of the writing or its resonance.On the very first page, describing Helen Watt: "Hope against reason: an opiate she'd long abandoned." What great characterization. As was the subtle yet plainspoken paragraph alerting us that Watt is very ill. The writing was so beautiful at times, I read it aloud to my husband, savoring the work of a true craftsman.The story progresses along three lines: that of Ester Velasquez, who lives in London, c. 1660; and of the modern-day scholars Watt and Levy. One theme of the book could be "how will you use your life? Will you live it fully or squander it?"-- in self-containment (Watt); the cowardice of the late-maturer (Levy); or by accepting cultural repression of women (Velasquez).As Levy learns about Velasquez having to hide her intellect, and the degree to which she suffers isolation because of her mind, his understanding grows in regard to the woman he loves, and women in general. This is a coming-of-age story. Levy is twenty five, beautiful, gifted with women, and stuck. He's unhappy and unsure of himself.Watt, gravely ill but persevering at the unlocking of the mystery of Ester, also examines her own life, with a lengthy flashback to when she was a young woman in love. Her fear of that love shaped her entire life, and it's only at the end and through her work with Levy that she achieves clarity in this regard.So, good character arcs, incredibly rich historical details, lots of good in this book, but overall, too long, opaque, and subtle for me. My apologies to the author, who must be a gifted scholar herself to have completed this work.

An amazing story, told through three individuals, in three times, but so connected. While parts are difficult to understand, those that were supposed to be written in the seventeenth century, the meanings still come through, or at least the wonderful minds of those times. I would reccomend this to anyone interested in those times in England, and of Portugal, and their Jews, but also in the coming of age of two individuals, one a young man and the other, an aging women professor, neari ng retirement

The story begins when a young couple inherit a 17th century manor in Richmond, a suburb of London. During renovations, a treasure trove of 17th century documents are discovered written in Portuguese, Hebrew, Castilian. and Latin. A crusty, very British female professor and a cocky Jewish American pre-doctoral student are asked to authenticate and translate the documents. In chapters that alternate between the 21st and the 17th centuries, the reader shares in both the life of painstaking historical research and document conservation and the hardships of the diaspora Jewish community returning to England at the behest of Cromwell. We dwell in the home of a learned, saintly rabbi, blinded during the Inquisition who is summoned to London to re-build the once exiled Jewish community. Who is his scribe and what is the importance of these documents to the past, the present and the future? How does an historian distinguish between fact and his/her own interpretations of people and events? This novel is a very dense read, packed with historical information., but the twists and turns in the narrative will dispel any pre-conceived notions the reader might form. Be warned that this is a difficult book to put down and certainly whets the appetite of the reader to explore more about the 17th century .
