First, there are many inaccuracies in this book. I applaud her effort, but she has not delivered. She does not treat her subjects even handedly. She fails to appreciate how success and achievement are the result of drive and determination--taking rather cheap shots at Michael Debakey. More concerning, her writing lacks objectivity. The writing style is more like a novel, which seems to have Texas-sized exaggerations and outright confabulations. Within the first 50 pages of the book, she states that the first transplant was in 1969-it was 1967. Further, for much of the information that her book contains which is not detailed, she does not cite sources. Having worked, trained, and practiced at the TMC, she lacks the medical background and understanding to deride the very approach she feigns. Hearts by Thomas Thompson is a much better book.

I've read many books (for laypeople) regarding the topic of heart transplantation and the quest for the artificial heart involving the surgeons in Houston, but this book took decades of details and made it an informative yet enjoyable read. I felt like I went along for the ride right along with them. It's impossible to truly understand and appreciate the level of dedication (and skill) these pioneers maintained to the bitter end. I plan to order copies for family members!

Enjoyed reading this book. Well written and insightful to the layperson. Amazing view into the lives/times of three great clinicians of our time - DeBakey, Cooley and Frazier.Wish I could have given it one more star. I felt it was too focused on the Texas Heart Institute; understandable considering the author and the subjects were all Texas based. There is a lot of stuff going on beyond Texas, and missing that presents a somewhat one sided perspective of the artificial heart space.

Most of the action in Ticker takes place in Houston, Texas. Artificial heart research began there in the 1960s. The 60s were a tumultuous decade, but it was also a can-do time in American history and the public perception was that the artificial heart was destined to become another American success story. Simultaneously, Americans were making great accomplishments in outer space travel. The national media wrote features about the leading heart surgeons and made them celebrities. They were compared to NASA’s first astronaut team. Unfortunately, the advances in artificial heart research proved to be modest at best. Creating a viable mechanical heart pump, to replace the real thing, is multiple times more difficult than getting a man to the lunar surface.Considering the technical subject matter, Ticker is a visceral read. The first half, profiles the famous researchers DeBakey and Cooley. They were super-sized intellects with egos to match. The earliest artificial hearts are described as large and somewhat cumbersome and the implantation of them in animals and people bordered on the inhumane. These chapters are intriguing and real page turners.A presence throughout Ticker is noted heart surgeon, Dr. O.H. “Bud” Frazier. His first-person accounts throughout the book are an invaluable oral history of artificial heart research from its very beginnings to the present day. Frazier comes off as a well-grounded person. He’s a brilliant scientist, a workaholic and a bit of an eccentric. He provided a comforting presence because, frankly, many of the patient’s stories in Ticker are quite grim.The second half of the book takes place much closer to the present day and we learn that artificial heart R & D has stalled somewhat, due in part to more restrictive government regulations on testing in human beings. The story shifts to an uncelebrated engineer, who lives half way around the globe. He comes up with an ingenious idea for a pumping system and subsequently relocates to Houston. He and his colleagues lobby a local, celebrity entrepreneur and his wife, to donate a large amount money for continuing research. These later chapters are well written and researched but unfortunately the subjects and the subject matter is just not as engrossing as what proceeded them.Ticker is solid history for lay readers with equals parts of humanity and science.

This is a really hack job, and more of a biography of Bud , who appears to be her close friend. The "Swartz factoids" mentioned, along with a raft of others in her book may seem at odds with history and memory to me.She has many, many facts wrong, and in many cases has lied about some of her sources. Too bad. Could have been a good book.

I guess this is simply one doctor’s journey towards creating an artificial heart, but it seemed like a promise of more. I read an excerpt from a magazine that pulled me into one man’s story. It was written like a novel, and I thought the patient was going to get some miraculous happy ending. Instead, he was one of many patients that tried an artificial heart-like device and passed away. I guess that’s life/science, but they open the book with that story and almost never mention that patient again, and barely provide any more to the story other than this Dr tried to save him at one point. I almost feel like I have to spoil the “ending” because essentially there is none. Basically their best hope is still in development and testing. If it ends up being the miracle invention they want, they’ll have to add to this book and properly finish it. This was an interesting read, but I didn’t like how the book was constructed.

The author is from Huston and the book tends to make more of the Texas importance in heart replacement. Still a nice review of the work of surgeons in their attempts to find a solution to the failing heart. Fair report on the Debakey/Cooley todo.

Reads like an adventure novel. Ms. Swartz knows her stuff and all the players. A sober look at mans attempt to enter the “bionic” age.

i wasn't sure at first if i was going to like the first book in the series. But i am so glad i kept Reading. I have finished the whole series and I am sad it's over. It had everything. Romance, mystery and lots of family dynamics. I don't know if there will be anymore books in this series, but I'm off to check out what else this author has to offer. i really enjoyed this series and found it hard to put down.. I fell in love with Hannah and Logan and the children.. Would highly reccomend this series.

I loved all of the Hana books! Read them all!! Dont really know why I found this such a I was so entranced , it that is exactly the best description!!!!! Delightful.... Hana is such a strong character, but her husband has such an exceptional love for her, she can almost get away with anything....

I started with the first book and got hooked. The story was so interesting and relate-able. The emotions were complex yet simply presented so that I felt such compassion for the characters. The cultural part was also very intriguing and has made me want to travel to meet these people! I savored the entire series and was very sad when it was completed, so I went to K T Bowes author page and ordered every last one of her books! I really like her style.I'm hoping there will be more Hana DuRose books, because I've fallen in love with Logan!!!!!!!!

This episode is the most violent, the most gut-wrenching, and the most gratifying. I cried...a lot. I highly recommend the whole series.

I read books to escape, but I also read books to feel. It's been a long time since a story has truly made me feel so much. It started with The Villain and grew even more intense in The Dove. I don't think I have ever both loved and hated a character so much as Adam. I thought he was brutal in The Villain, but he outdoes himself in this book. He almost gets to the point of no return, but in usual Adam form, he catches you off guard. Daphne surprised me just as much as Adam. What she is able to endure is amazing and her growth as a character is my favorite. I can't even begin to list the range of emotions I felt while reading this and not just from our hero and heroine. Niall and Olivia tore at my heart strings, and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for them. And then there's Robert, he's so sweet and caring, and I love what he brought to the story. All of these characters and facets come together to create such an emotionally beautiful read. It really shows you what lengths people will go through for what they believe in and love. It's heartbreaking, gut wrenching and most of all satisfying. Victoria Vale creates timeless characters and settings that will forever imprint themselves on your heart. This is certainly a duo of books that I will treasure and come back to time and time again.

This becomes a must read after you've read the first book in this duology. It doesn't disappoint especially with regard to the two principal characters, Adam and Daphne. My criticisms of the duology are that this book ends rather abruptly and without dealing with the fate of three characters who do play important roles in both books: Niall, Adam's manservant, Olivia, Adam's very much harmed cousin, and her child, Serena. I could certainly be wrong, but my guess is that Victoria Vale submitted her manuscript and was asked to write a bit more indicating what happened to Adam and Daphne and she did so, writing about what happened a year after she and Adam returned to his castle after their marriage. But Niall, Olivia, and Serena also live there and their fate is of interest (at least to me). One other criticism is that Daphne played the harp in both books, but she was injured toward the end of the second book. It's not clear whether she was able to continue to play after her injury. She and Adam enjoyed playing instruments together, she on the harp and he on the piano.

Given the intrigue presented at the end of the first book in this duet, The Villain, I was compelled to read on into this the second book, The Dove. I was even more delighted with this book than the first. To be sure…I was sufficiently delighted, entertained and found the Lord Adam Callahan, Earl of Hartmoor delectably swoon worthy in the first book. I also enjoyed the fiery, loving and passionate…but principled where it counts…heroine, Lady Daphne Fairchild.In this book we find that Lady Daphne has been paid handsomely for her month-long virginal, sexual surrender to Lord Hartmoor as they agreed. She had come to feel that she belonged with Adam in the light of the revelations regarding his motives in pursuing the downfall of the male members of the Fairchild family, her compatibility with him in so many interests and her increasing desire for all the physical delights she finds in his arms. Dare I say she was also falling in love with him? She was summarily dismissed from Hartmoor and brought back to her father and brother in London. Feeling betrayed by both her father and brother in addition to being spurned by Adam, she set about making a home for herself and hoped to gradually find a place in London society.It is a familiar trope that Adam, despite his resolve, could not get the lovely Daphne out of his mind…his dreams…his desires…his system. So, it’s off to London for him. He tries to tell himself he needs to go to London because he is not finished with his revenge on Daphne’s brother. A fervid dance of desire, denial, unrealized emotion and daring dreams begins as Adam pursues his singular need to own what he has claimed as “his” and to hold her close…Lady Daphne.Frustrating Adam in his pursuit of her is Daphne’s realization that she needs more from Adam than his claim of ownership, although she enjoys all that this entails…she needs more... his fidelity and his love. Daphne also fears that her Fairchild linage will always be a barrier to true and lasting love with Adam. As she comes to truly care for him and his family, Daphne worries about Adam’s determined pursuit of revenge on her brother. Her worries are not for the fate of her brother but for the emotional and spiritual toll it is taking on Adam. Moreover, she feels like a pawn in Adam’s plans in taking vengeance out on her brother.Ultimately, Daphne is willing to forgo all her desire for love in a traditional commitment and be whatever Adam wants if he would only choose her instead of pursuing vengeance. An explosive situation forces Adam to make his choice. Yet, his choice doesn’t exactly bring about the hoped for and longed for result. Even so…is it evident that our swoon-worthy hero finds himself overwhelmingly out-of-his-element besotted by our heroine?The writing itself is suitably stylistic for the genre. The story is told in third-person alternating POV’s with well-written dialogue and character reflections at appropriate times contributing to a near seamless flow in the narrative. I would be seriously neglectful if I didn’t mention what a divine dirty-talker our hero Adam is… adding so much ardency to the spellbinding erotic love scenes.Oh…it is just the right kind of “stuff” for which romance junkies live. Once again, this particular Regency era romance is peppered with the darker power-exchange elements that some (perhaps more than some? 😎) readers find decidedly exciting.As for who would enjoy this duet? I’ll say it once again… you know who you are!!!Quotes:“Even after the mess he’d made of her life, after the things her father and brother had done, a part of her remained untouched and pure. Did she truly believe there was any good left in him—that he even had a soul worth redeeming?”“You stupid little thing. You do not want this … my love isn’t the kind that nurtures or soothes. It’s the kind that hurts. The kind that destroys things. It’s the kind that consumes you until there’s nothing left.”

I adored the first book. I loved how Adam straddled the line between good and evil. His light shows through his love and loyalty toward Olivia and Serena. His darkness shows through his exploitation of Daphne. She becomes a drug to him, however. He is aware of the fact that Daphne is not at fault for her brother’s actions, but can’t bring himself to stop tormenting her. And torment her he does, even though he cares for her and becomes protective of her.The ending disappointed me tremendously. SPOILER******:After everything that Adam put Daphne through, she took a bullet for him and he left her when she disclosed her love for him. WHAT!? I wanted to throw my Kindle! I wanted to see him grovel, atone for all of his abuses toward her. Instead he leaves her under the guise of setting her free because he supposedly believes that’s what is best for her. He leaves her wounded and weeping, broken completely. He sends another man to propose to her! I couldn’t forgive Adam after this. Daphne then CHASES Adam to win him back! I loved everything about the books except this. Adam should’ve been the one to atone and make it right, not Daphne. I still loved the books, but I laid awake and rewrote the ending in my head before I fell asleep! Adam wasn’t redeemable to me otherwise!

A clear and concise guide to an often difficult and mysterious topic that many may find daunting by other scholars and clergy. Thiselton is an Anglican priest and eminent biblical scholar. His explanation is reminiscent of C.S. Lewis’ deft handling of complex subjects. He writes an approachable book to the layman, sufficiently sourced for the academic, solid for clergy and student alike. Quite often books on these topics are muddled by more jargon than is necessary. He deals quite fairly with divergent views on the placement and emphasis of the Holy Spirit mostly in a Trinitarian context without giving short shrift to other contextual approaches. The breadth of his coverage and span is quite amazing given it is a relatively short book (200 pages). His book has much to recommend it for brevity and clarity. This clarity has convinced this reader to attempt his longer version on the same topic.

I was assigned to read this book as part of my coursework in Naturopathic Eclectic Medicine. Though the book's focus is primarily on proper eating habits for optimal digestion, the final chapter describes how proper nutrition is only one facet (though an essential one) of good health, so that nutrition must be worked into a complete health program in order to succeed in health maintenance or recovery from disease.The author is a Hygienist rather than a Dietitian. The Dietitian (as implied by the author) concerns himself primary with the nutrients in the menu. He may or may not concern himself with compatible digestibility of those foods. [I understand that there are many levels of expertise in the field called Dietitian, so I am not intentionally stereotyping.] The Hygienist is concerned primarily with the digestibility of those nutrients when eaten in a balanced diet. Even good food, if not eaten in compatible combination with other foods is poorly digested (fermentation), weakening instead of strengthening the body.The concepts taught in the book are very helpful in remedying dyspepsia, gas, sleepless, etc., but it requires a commitment on the part of the reader for the remedy to be effective (as do all lasting rewards in life).The concepts to be mastered for proper food combinations are not trivial, so the book may require several reads. However, it is concise, provable, and thorough; well worth the read. I use it as a handbook.

Dr. Shelton, in his day was a genius. His food combining suggestions hold as true today as when written. I have studied Dr. Sheltons works and most of todays current knowledge is based upon his research.I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to loose weight. Combining foods correctly, the system eventually adjusts, cleans itself out, the body becomes nourished... you eat less... Wallah! you loose weight.No magic here. No harsh diets that usually don't work with weight coming back with a vengeance once you quit. Food Combining is plain, simple common sense ... if, you think about it.Do give this method a try. Besides weight loss, I believe you will start to feel better: no longer sluggish, tired, snacking all the time to feed a body starved from nutrients blocked within the digestive tract from incorrect food combining.At least give this a try. In the end, you have nothing to loose. But it is not a magic bullet. You will not be skinny in 60 days. It took time and effort to get that blog around the tummy and buttocks ... it takes time to naturally get it off. And like it or not, exercise will help in the process. Keeping muscles in prime condition is important. It is muscle action that moves everything around in there and out of there. If your muscles are stagnant so are you.

The ideas are sound and food combining makes sense. It makes me personally feel better. I eat the things I like. I simply eat them according to the combining principles. I used to not eat fruit because it made me itchy and painful. Now I can have all I want I just dont eat anything else for 2-3 hours after, that's if I have it for breakfast. If I have it for lunch I wait until the proteins in my stomach are gone about 3-5 hours depending on how much I ate and then have a late fruit lunch. I don't eat fruit for dinner. I don't combine starches with protein and no longer get heartburn. I would recommend the book, just modify what you like to fit the principle most of the time. I cheated the other day and had potato chips with a fish dinner, but I ate the chips last and not too many of them so as, hopefully not to inhibit the production of pepsin which is necessary to break down protein. Or that a hamburger is a culinary "Abomination" Well, it's simple. Your body makes one acid to digest protein (the patty) and a different acid to digest the carb (the bun). When you Eat a burger, your body pours out both acids, which neutralize one another and the food sits, ferments, rots and hardens. Yuck. Pick up this book and swap your favorite abominable food combos for simple, easy to digest meals.

Some foods need to be digested by acid in the stomach, and some food needs to be digested by an alkaline secretions. . Those different foods should not be eaten at the same time. This book explains this process and gives a list of the foods that should not be eaten at the same time.

This little handbook certainly gave me all the information I was searching for. It gives the entire understanding of how the digestive system works with the different food groups. My problem with it is that no one - especially me..wants to eat in food groups leaving hours between ingesting each one. I like having the information so I can make my own decisions based on knowledge. anyone having digestive issues or allergy issues would benefit greatly from understanding what this book explains.

Bought for my son's family which includes teenagers who like to cook. They got into too much fast food and needed to get back to basics. They all loved it!

I am a great admirer of Shelton's book on Fasting. This one does not impress me as much. It is useful if viewed as a historical document; to understand the development of different perspectives on this subject. But I would consult the more recent nutritional literature before adopting any particular view as to "food combining".
