Chapter 1 "How white the moonlight is tonight!" said Anne Blythe to herself, as she went up the walk of the Wright garden to Diana Wright's front door, where little cherry-blossom petals were coming down on the salty, breeze-stirred air. She paused for a moment to look about her on hills and woods she had loved in olden days and still loved. Dear Avonlea! Glen St. Mary was home to her now and had been home for many years but Avonlea had something that Glen St. Mary could never have. Ghosts of herself met her at every turn...the fields she had roamed in welcomed her...unfading echoes of the old sweet life were all about her...every spot she looked upon had some lovely memory. There were haunted gardens here and there where bloomed all the roses of yesteryear. Anne always loved to come home to Avonlea even when, as now, the reason for her visit had been a sad one. She and Gilbert had come up for the funeral of his father and Anne had stayed for a week. Marilla and Mrs. Lynde could not bear to have her go away too soon. Her old porch gable room was always kept for her and when Anne had gone to it the night of her arrival she found that Mrs. Lynde had put a big, homey bouquet of spring flowers in it for her...a bouquet that, when Anne buried her face in it, seemed to hold all the fragrance of unforgotten years. The Anne-who-used-to-be was waiting there for her. Deep, dear old gladnesses stirred in her heart. The gable room was putting its arms around her...enclosing her...enveloping her. She looked lovingly at her old bed with the apple-leaf spread Mrs. Lynde had knitted and the spotless pillows trimmed with deep lace Mrs. Lynde had crocheted...at Marilla's braided rugs on the floor...at the mirror that had reflected the face of the little orphan, with her unwritten child's forehead, who had cried herself to sleep there that first night so long ago. Anne forgot that she was the joyful mother of five children...with Susan Baker again knitting mysterious bootees at Ingleside. She was Anne of Green Gables once more. Mrs. Lynde found her still staring dreamily in the mirror when she came in, bringing clean towels. "It's real good to have you home again, Anne, that's what. It's nine years since you went away, but Marilla and I can't seem to get over missing you. It's not so lonesome now since Davy got married...Millie is a real nice little thing...such pies!...though she's curious as a chipmunk about everything. But I've always said and always will say that there's nobody like you." "Ah, but this mirror can't be tricked, Mrs. Lynde. It's telling me plainly, ‘You're not as young as you once were,'" said Anne whimsically. "You've kept your complexion very well," said Mrs. Lynde consolingly. "Of course you never had much color to lose." "At any rate, I've never a hint of a second chin yet," said Anne gaily. "And my old room remembers me, Mrs. Lynde. I'm glad...it would hurt me so if I ever came back and found it had forgotten me. And it's wonderful to see the moon rising over the Haunted Wood again." "It looks like a great big piece of gold in the sky, doesn't it?" said Mrs. Lynde, feeling that she was taking a wild, poetical flight and thankful that Marilla wasn't there to hear. "Look at those pointed firs coming out against it...and the birches in the hollow still holding their arms up to the silver sky. They're big trees now...they were just baby things when I came here...that does make me feel a bit old." "Trees are like children," said Mrs. Lynde. "It's dreadful the way they grow up the minute you turn your back on them. Look at Fred Wright...he's only thirteen but he's nearly as tall as his father. There's a hot chicken pie for supper and I made some of my lemon biscuits for you. You needn't be a mite afraid to sleep in that bed. I aired the sheets today...and Marilla didn't know I did it and gave them another airing...and Millie didn't know either of us did and gave them a third. I hope Mary Maria Blythe will get out tomorrow...she always enjoys a funeral so." "Aunt Mary Maria...Gilbert always calls her that although she is only his father's cousin...always calls me ‘Annie,'" shuddered Anne. "And the first time she saw me after I was married she said, ‘It's so strange Gilbert picked you. He could have had so many nice girls.' Perhaps that's why I've never liked her...and I know Gilbert doesn't either, though he's too clannish to admit it." "Will Gilbert be staying up long?" "No. He has to go back tomorrow night. He left a patient in a very critical condition." "Oh, well, I suppose there isn't much to keep him in Avonlea now, since his mother went last year. Old Mr. Blythe never held up his head after her death...just hadn't anything left to live for. The Blythes were always like that...always set their affections too much on earthly things. It's real sad to think there are none of them left in Avonlea. They were a fine old stock. But then...there's any amount of Sloanes. The Sloanes are still Sloanes, Anne, and will be forever and ever, world without end, amen." "Let there be as many Sloanes as there will, I'm going out after supper to walk all over the old orchard by moonlight. I suppose I'll have to go to bed finally...though I've always thought sleeping on moonlight nights a waste of time...but I'm going to wake early to see the first faint morning light steal over the Haunted Wood. The sky will turn to coral and the robins will be strutting around...perhaps a little gray sparrow will light on the windowsill...and there'll be gold and purple pansies to look at..." "But the rabbits has et up all the June lily bed," said Mrs. Lynde sadly, as she waddled downstairs, feeling secretly relieved that there need be no more talk about the moon. Anne had always been a bit queer that way. And there did not any longer seem to be much use in hoping she would outgrow it. Diana came down the walk to meet Anne. Even in the moonlight you saw that her hair was still black and her cheeks rosy and her eyes bright. But the moonlight could not hide that she was something stouter than in years agone...and Diana had never been what Avonlea folks called "skinny." "Don't worry, darling...I haven't come to stay..." "As if I'd worry over that," said Diana reproachfully. "You know I'd far rather spend the evening with you than go to the reception. I feel I haven't seen half enough of you and now you're going back day after tomorrow. But Fred's brother, you know...we've just got to go." "Of course you have. And I just ran up for a moment. I came the old way, Di...past the Dryad's Bubble...through the Haunted Wood...past your bowery old garden...and along by Willowmere. I even stopped to watch the willows upside down in the water as we always used to do. They've grown so." "Everything has," said Diana with a sigh. "When I look at young Fred! We've all changed so...except you. You never change, Anne. How do you keep so slim? Look at me!" "A bit matronish of course," laughed Anne. "But you've escaped the middle-aged spread so far, Di. As for my not changing...well, Mrs. H. B. Donnell agrees with you. She told me at the funeral that I didn't look a day older. But Mrs. Harmon Andrews doesn't. She said, ‘Dear me, Anne, how you've failed!' It's all in the beholder's eye...or conscience. The only time I feel I'm getting along a bit is when I look at the pictures in the magazines. The heroes and heroines in them are beginning to look too young to me. But never mind, Di...we're going to be girls again tomorrow. That's what I've come up to tell you. We're going to take an afternoon and evening off and visit all our old haunts...every one of them. We'll walk over the spring fields and through those ferny old woods. We'll see all the old familiar things we loved and hills where we'll find our youth again. Nothing ever seems impossible in spring, you know. We'll stop feeling parental and responsible and be as giddy as Mrs. Lynde really thinks me still in her heart of hearts. There's really no fun in being sensible all the time, Diana." "My, how like you that sounds! And I'd love to. But..." "There aren't any buts. I know you're thinking, ‘Who'll get the men's supper?'" "Not exactly. Anne Cordelia can get the men's supper as well as I can, if she is only eleven," said Diana proudly. "She was going to, anyway. I was going to the Ladies' Aid. But I won't. I'll go with you. It will be like having a dream come true. You know, Anne, lots of evenings I sit down and just pretend we're little girls again. I'll take our supper with us..." "And we'll eat it back in Hester Gray's garden...I suppose Hester Gray's garden is still there?" "I suppose so," said Diana doubtfully. "I've never been there since I was married. Anne Cordelia explores a lot...but I always tell her she mustn't go too far from home. She loves prowling about the woods...and one day when I scolded her for talking to herself in the garden she said she wasn't talking to herself...she was talking to the spirit of the flowers. You know that dolls' tea set with the tiny pink rosebuds you sent her for her ninth birthday. There isn't a piece broken...she's so careful. She only uses it when the Three Green People come to tea with her. I can't get out of her who she thinks they are. I declare in some ways, Anne, she's far more like you than she is like me." "Perhaps there's more in a name than Shakespeare allowed. Don't grudge Anne Cordelia her fancies, Diana. I'm always sorry for children who don't spend a few years in fairyland." "Olivia Sloane is our teacher now," said Diana doubtfully. "She's a B.A., you know, and just took the school for a year to be near her mother. She says children should be made to face realities." "Have I lived to hear you taking up with Sloanishness, Diana Wright?" "No...no...no! I don't like her a bit...She has such round staring blue eyes like all that clan. And I don't mind Anne Cordelia's fancies. They're pretty...just like yours used to be. I guess she'll get enough ‘reality' as life goes on." "Well, it's settled then. Come down to Green Gables about two and we'll have a drink of Marilla's red currant wine...she makes it now and then in spite of the minister and Mrs. Lynde...just to make us feel real devilish." "Do you remember the day you set me drunk on it?" giggled Diana, who did not mind "devilish" as she would if anybody but Anne used it. Everybody knew Anne didn't really mean things like that. It was just her way. "We'll have a real do-you-remember day tomorrow, Diana. I won't keep you any longer...there's Fred coming with the buggy. Your dress is lovely." "Fred made me get a new one for the wedding. I didn't feel we could afford it since we built the new barn, but he said he wasn't going to have his wife looking like someone that was sent for and couldn't go when everybody else would be dressed within an inch of her life. Wasn't that just like a man?" "Oh, you sound just like Mrs. Elliott at the Glen," said Anne severely. "You want to watch that tendency. Would you like to live in a world where there were no men?" "It would be horrible," admitted Diana. "Yes, yes, Fred, I'm coming. Oh, all right! Till tomorrow then, Anne." Anne paused by the Dryad's Bubble on her way back. She loved that old brook so. Every trill of her childhood's laughter that it had ever caught, it had held and now seemed to give out again to her listening ears. Her old dreams...she could see them reflected in the clear Bubble...old vows...old whispers...the brook kept them all and murmured of them...but there was no one to listen save the wise old spruces in the Haunted Wood that had been listening so long.

Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful classic story and it gets 5 stars. This particular printing, however, is completely unacceptable. It's as if someone typed it into a document, and printed it off--no page numbers, not titled at the top of each page, the lines don't even break properly (see photo). Purchased as a gift, thankfully with enough time to purchase a better quality copy--probably for less money! A disgrace to the publishing community.

I LOVED Anne of Green Gables as a child and own the complete hard copy of the Anne series. Initially, I was delighted to find this collection of books written by one of my all time favorite authors for only $0.99 (kindle price. What a steal!) and felt I had to get the digital copy for my kindle at once. As soon as the product was delivered to my device, I began to read it since it's been years since I've visited the darling world that L.M Montgomery created.I was very surprised to find that I kept tripping on certain sentences; the writing didn't seem as smooth as I remembered. When I got to chapter 6, I decided to compare a sentence in the digital print to my old, yellowing physical copy of Anne of Green Gables book. I realized why I had some difficulty reading my new digital copy: THERE ARE TYPOS IN THIS PRODUCT.It contains the WORST kinds of typos. There are typos in which it results in sentences that don't make sense. There are typos with the wrong pronouns in them that make it confusing for the reader to understand which character the publisher meant to write about. I am able to follow the story because I've read Anne of Green Gables more than once with my hard copy but for new readers, these typos will make this beautiful story difficult to read and at times, understand.I hope the digital copy can be fixed so that owners can enjoy L.M. Montgomery's work as it was meant to be enjoyed. I have given this two stars instead of one because of the fabulous price for kindle readers.

BUYER BEWARE! The version published by "CreateSpace" is slapdash print-on-demand garbage. I hoped an illustrated version would be good for a child, but I returned it on first inspection. Nowhere could I find evidence of thought or effort in layout to justify any price. Illustrations are small, extremely infrequent, and essentially worthless. Some shameless soul has simply taken LM Montgomery's text, which, as it is in the public domain, is freely available to anyone, and tried to make money selling it. Interested readers would be advised to download a free ebook or pay for a handsomer edition, such as the Puffin In Bloom version. We went with the Puffin in Bloom version and are much more satisfied.

This is a great book, but buying this edition which Marco Pedulla purports to have translated constitutes buying stolen property. The book was written in Englilsh, so Pedulla has translated nothing. What he has done has taken material free in the public domain and offered it on Amazon.Amazon should NOT support theft.

The illustrations are actually random pictures that are creepy since they are in the beginning when Anne meets Mathew Cuthbert so they insinuate a romance between them. And the free audiobook is click bait to set you up to download an app and give your email address to spammers. Screen shots of the "illustrations" below.

This review is of the kindle version of Anne: The Green Gables Complete Collection and does not reflect on the L.M. Montgomery text. The Anne books have always been favorites of mine. Buy the book, but get another edition! First issue: Really random pics grabbed from some art history textbook do not qualify as illustrations. They are more distracting than I would have imagined. Why didn't they leave the totally unrelated images out? Second issue: This is some new definition of complete that I am unacquainted with. This is Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea only. None of the later books are included. False advertising. A text I am being pulled out of by unnecessary distractions. There have to be better options. I am going in search of one.

I would have returned this item but my window closed. This version explicitly states in the copy write that it is for sale only in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Why does that matter other than Amazon infringement on copyright? The appendix are missing which contains very important material making the book less usable.

I am grateful for this book. I like to really understand things and this book makes understanding a reality. It is an exemplary model of technical writing. This is the fourth book I have read on TCP/IP and it should have been the first. Since I am a network engineer with no background in programming some of the illustrations from BSD Unix sailed over my head but there was not enough of this to make me feel that any of my time was wasted. In fact, now I want to get a solid introduction to programming so that I can follow along with the rest of the series this book begins.

Very nice book. No missing pages and this should be for everybody pursuing CCIE.

I have been doing Internet protocol engineering for 12 years and I can say that people in the industry consider Comer Vol 1 to be the bible for Internetworking reference. The fourth edition is nearly three times as thick as my copy of the first edition. Douglas Comer keeps this book up to date and useful for modern Internet developers. If you're a student, read this book. I've gone through a lot of books that claim to be the same thing as Comer Vol 1 and have found none that really compare.

I knew nothing about TCP/IP. As a result, I bought a book "learn TCP/IP in 24 hours" and trashed it after I bought this book, no more 24 hour books. I had no idea what routing is and were to start looking for documents on the internet. This book is scientific and puts it all together. Each chapter lists the RFC that he relied on so you know were the stuff came from. The book is not boring; the author is excellent in explaining ideas. He covers ICMP, GGP, OSPF, EGP, DHCP, DNS, BOOTP, ARP and more. I feel I have accomplished something big by reeading this book. If you are not a beginner in routing, then look at the RFCs they are the source.

As Described. Good Sale.

Douglas Comer is the definitive work on TCP. A book every developer should read.

Still relevant today....the basics of TCP/IP have not changed! Also, an excellent explanation!

There were two good stories in this book for my liking. The 1st was "You Should Let Me Love You" by Anna Black. She's Awesome! And the 2nd was "Divorce Party" by Jada Pearl. She's Great!I like that all five authors wrote a book for older African-American women.Keep them coming.

Oh my God Anna Black story was the best, then the first story, then the fourth, the second story it was just ok, but worth my money, I love the book

Loved each story. The ending to Just let me Love you was Awesome! Part 2 Please!

EXCELLENT

*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*Who says sexy and erotic is just for the younger crowd? The cougars are on the prowl, and they're not ashamed to go after their prey! This book definitely strokes the imagination, and gets the reader in the mood for some of that "late night, early morning" action. It is erotica, scorching hot, sexy, steamy, and intense. The book is written well, the stories are easy to follow, and since it is a compilation of stories, you get the chance to witness the stretch of each author's imagination. Personally, I give this book two thumbs up! Definitely looking for another round of the Cougar Cocktales! This compilation of stories is smoking hot from beginning to end!

Girlllllll........ Let me just say that this collaboration is hot like fire, honey!!!!!!!!! You going to need a sex partner or some toys. For the more conservative: just have some wine. Baby, let me tell you this book right here is freaking amazing and I mean FREAKING amazing. Cougars Cocktales is a must read and must needed in this day and age when older women are just looking for good ole fashioned back breaking, headboard sex. These five author did an excellent job with this collaboration and a great intro to the authors you haven't read before as well. WHEW! this book isn't for the prudish or bsers.

If you're looking for some old fashioned unadulterated middle age woman serving a much younger man, you've come to the right place. These stories will have you considering a fling with a young man…unless you've been there before. 😂I would definitely recommend this book and give it 💎💎💎💎.

Cougar Cocktales was a very hot and sexy read. As a woman of that certain “Cougar” age, each story was hotter than the last. Five stories told by five incredible voices telling some serious pantie wetting tales. I thought I was going to combust into flames. Loved it!

It should be known from the get-go that this book isn't for everyone; however, for those people who have been caught under the siren song of the Tsangpo Gorge, this book should be considered a "must-have", as it combines a thrilling travel narrative of repeated trips to this magical place, with a personal journey into the heart of Buddhism, and helps shed more light on the mysterious nature of the area. The Tsangpo Gorge and the area around it, known as "Pemako", is a place known by few, but deeply loved by those who have become enchanted with it's spell. It is brought to people's attentions through a few different avenues, be it explorers like Mr. Baker and Ken Storm, the kayakers who have tried to descend the wild river, the wild Buddhist Monpa hunters who still ply this canyon, or naturalists like Frank Ward, and for many folks once you learn about this amazing place all you want to do is learn more. This is where this book shines.Following Mr. Baker and his compatriots as they make repeated trips to the area, this book is both a running journal of their journeys, and a personal reflection on the nature of Buddhism (in this case Tantric Buddhism) as Mr. Baker follows along on his own journey as a practitioner and ultimately a pilgrim. The two journeys are intertwined beautifully, and by the end of the book you can understand the deeper, spiritual connection that Mr. Baker has with the Tsangpo Gorge and Pemako, and how the significance of "beyul", or wild places, shape certain parts of Buddhism, and how the pursuit of such things can bring both madness and ultimate enlightenment. Mr. Baker definitely explores this pursuit, and it is written directly from someone who is intimately connected to and aware of the power that pursuit can generate. With an amazing cast of supporting characters, including my favorite, Kawa Tulku, the book certainly explores deeper regions of the soul that most of us rarely- if ever- experience or explore.Whether you bought this book for the adventure narrative, the exploration of Tantric Buddhism, the hidden waterfalls of Dorje Pagmo, or the journey to the beyul of Pemako, if you are keenly interested in knowing more about the Tsangpo Gorge, Pemako, and the deeper connections involving them, then you will love this book the way so many others have.

The Tsangpo river cuts the eastern Himalayas to join Brahmaputra in the jungles of Assam. Intrepid British explorers have chartered most of its course during the glorious days of the Raj - leaving unexplored ~10 mile stretch of an inaccessible 'Tsangpo gorge'. Because the altitude difference between Tibet and India cannot be accounted for by the known flow of Tsangpo, the Brits hypothesized that this stretch of the river contains a large waterfall (or a series of them). This book describes several expeditions undertaken 1990-2000 by Baker and his colleague Hamid Sardar to solve this geogrpahical enigma. Both adventurers speak Tibetan and have a working knowledge of Tibetan tantra, both completed silent meditation retreats in isolated caves and both practiced with 'tantric consorts', Tibetan & Indian women placed on special diets (consisting of rose leaves and gold) trained to help men achieve a 'union of male and female principles in order to recognize the ultimate Emptiness of all phenomena." While Baker tittilates the reader here, he never delivers real information.Baler obtained a number of esoteric texts from lamas familiar with the Tsangpo territory - the texts detailed magical places throughout the gorge, incantation 'keys' necessary to 'open' those places, the nature of 'deities' residing in them and the value of their help to realization of the fact that 'nothing inherently exists on its own'. Heh. These texts, as well as subsequent Baker's narrative, reveal that the valley has ALWAYS been known to and lived in by Tibetans and local Monpa & Lopa tribes; it was never unknown, never had to be discovered and the rivalries driving American and Chinese expeditions to chart the river portrayed in the book seem pointless and even slightly comical. As well as poignant: expeditions (including Baker's own) were quite content leaving ailing and weak members behind to fend for themselves. Personally, I found the obsession with 'discovering' and 'exploring' a bit disconcerting. Why do we have to document, photograph, chart etc. every nook and cranny on this planet? Why can't we let it be? let local people be? What is the confusticated point?Baker insists on describing every single leech-infested forest and swamp on their way, every impassable boulder, pass, rivulet, stone or log which, with 500 pages, merge into a general picture of hardship, malaise, effort, hunger, leaking tents and, above all, sheer survival luck. There were so many cases where the 'pilgrims' appeared to wander aimlessly, in the dark or fog, having lost their native guides only to find them at the end of the day, against all odds huddling around a fire, that one is forced to contemplate the possibility of divine guidance.I would mention the fascinating account of 'poison cults' in local villages, and of small Tibetan monasteries and hermitages, scattered throughout the most inaccesible parts of the valley..., the gift of psychedelic mushrooms to a Tibetan hermit monk, and the touching relationship that developed between the Chinese liason officer, 'Mr. Gunn', and Occidental adventurers. Between the lines we can also read about havoc that local Monpas wreak upon local fauna (with mass-killing of rare animals such as the takin buffalo and tigers) and the much more serious Chinese depredation consisting of systematic mechanized exploitation of Tibetan natural resources and destruction of the environment (not to mention cutural genocide). Perhaps understandably, Baker wants to preserve his future access to Tibet. The greatest weakness of the book is that we learn little about Baker's own practices and realizations. We learn a lot about leeches and orchids, but what was going on with the lama's daughter mentioned early in the book? what about the tantric consorts? what (if any) spiritual realizations and benefits did Baker and Sardar derive from obsessive backpacking along the Tsangpo...? We also don't learn who financed these expensive yearly expeditions. Why are there no photo's of the supposedly discovered waterfall? Why can't the waterfall be seen from sallites or googleEarth? The apparent fear of personal disclosure detracts from the value of the book.Nevertheless, the book is well written and I enjoyed reading it. One cannot escape the notion that Baker and Sardar exemplify some of the best traits of 'man' - courage, resourcefulnes, commitment to spiritual growth and to having a good time.

While Suzanne Brooker’s book focuses on landscapes and the natural world, the incomparable value of classical drawing principles is that they can be applied to any subject matter. Beginning with an introduction to materials (graphite pencil is the primary medium used in the book, with brief discussion of colored pencil, charcoal, pastel and water-soluble pencils), Brooker takes the reader through the basic elements of drawing, such as line, value and form, and how specific techniques can be used to express them. For me, the meat of the book begins with Chapter 3, Light Logic and Shading Techniques. Although I have studied the basic principles covered by this chapter several times in other books and classes, and I thought I understood them, Brooker’s explanations helped me to internalize the principles in a way that I hadn’t before. What is “light logic”? “The sun touches objects in nature, creating areas of light and shadow in a predictable fashion.” Because the human brain automatically uses light logic to perceive an object, it’s an essential concept for rendering a three-dimensional form realistically. It sounds so simple – the classic drawing exercise of shading a ball or cube lighted from one side – yet it’s not at all easy to apply textbook understanding to real objects that are not balls and cubes. First you have to learn to see the highlight, core shadow and reflected light on an object in space, and then you must transfer that perception to the flat paper. I am still learning to do this, of course (I expect it to be a lifelong challenge), but I have nailed the first step: I can finally see this principle. (Now I can’t walk through a park on a sunny day without seeing core shadows on trees!)Succeeding chapters focus on step-by-step exercises for developing drawings from photo references. Many demos are included, showing various stages of drawing development. Particularly helpful are sections devoted to specific natural elements that make up a landscape, such as sky, terrain, trees and foliage, and water.Throughout the book are many examples of Brooker’s own work and those of her peers, students and classical masters. Even if you never draw, it’s a huge volume of delicious eye candy to savor. But after studying this book, I believe you will draw, because fully understanding these classic principles is likely to reinforce your passion for drawing as it did mine. When I finally grasped concepts that had been only floating peripherally in my brain before, I could not keep myself from putting them into practice. This beautiful book is a reference that I will turn to repeatedly to reinforce and remind me of what I’m learning. It also reminds me of everything I love about drawing. The many exquisite examples in the book show me what’s possible, and the instructions explain why.

Provided great techniques.

This book teaches the basic techniques of drawing and how to apply them to landscape drawing. The author started by talking about the different tools and materials for drawing. She explained various terms and techniques, like foreshortening, perspective, proportion, and such. She also covered the basics like how to hold a pencil, the grid method, composition, light and shading. She talked about how to apply these concepts to a drawing when you begin a drawing. Then she specifically talked about how to draw sky, terrain, trees, and water. In each section, she provided several step-by-step demonstrations showing how to draw different types of clouds, trees, etc. The first part of the book focused on pencil drawing, but she did cover charcoal pencils, colored pencils, and pastel pencils and included one demonstration for each. Overall, I'd recommend this informative book.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.

I found this book extremely easy to understand and use. The information is practical and illuminating, especially for me. Many times a look at a landscape and just love it - but where to begin? how to interpret it and what mark or stroke will translate what I see on paper. This book goes a long way to answer some of these questions, I particularly love the section on the sky and sea, and the part on foliage is also very good. There is an awful lot of information in this book, some of it basic other more advanced, so whatever your ability this book should satisfy any landscape artist.

Shooting in the Wild: An Insider's Account of Making Movies in the Animal Kingdom, by Chris Palmer

From Booklist

Longtime producer Palmer provides an in-depth look at wild animals on film, covering the history of wildlife documentaries, safety issues, and the never-ending pressure to obtain the “money shot.” Marlin Perkins, Jacques Cousteau, Steve Irwin, Timothy Treadwell, and many other familiar names are discussed along with their work, accidents, and in some cases, untimely deaths. Palmer is highly critical of Irwin, and offers fascinating revelations about game farms used by exploitative filmmakers and photographers looking for easy shots and willing to use caged animals to obtain them. He also considers the subliminal messages of many wildlife films, considering everything from Shark Week to Happy Feet and how they manipulate audiences toward preset conclusions about animal behavior. In all this is an engaging and exceedingly timely look at a form of entertainment the public has long taken for granted and which, as Palmer points out, really needs a fresh and careful reconsideration. --Colleen Mondor

Chris Palmer combines the inside knowledge of a consummate industry professional with the concerns of an ethicist in this superb look at the world of environmental and wildlife filmmaking. There has always been a certain amount of tampering with reality in the field, but with a rising demand for new content that has to be on time and on budget, some producers engage in outright deceit or take moral shortcuts. Captive animals are substituted for wild ones, wild ones are provoked into uncharacteristic displays of violence in a lurid grab at ratings. Palmer himself admits that he has incorporated footage of captive animals. He's open and honest as to how his thinking has evolved, and unafraid to name those who knowingly practice deception. This informative, compelling book ends with an eight-point ethic for working and prospective filmmakers. SHOOTING IN THE WILD is an important work by an enlightened filmmaker. Highly recommended.

Over decades of watching wildlife documentaries, I had never heard (or registered) Chris Palmer's name. He's the guy behind the scenes organizing money, politics, policies, lobbying and such - the aspect of wildlife film making that most viewers blissfully ignore. Ignorance is bliss this book confirms.I came across this book as an Amazon recommendation based on a few purchases over the holidays. I thought it was an interesting topic and bought the book after its five-star rating and pages and pages of praise from the who's who of the wildlife world and a preface by Jane Goodall. Chris presents the book very well from the management perspective of the wildlife film making business. However, it's like listening to a politician's speech, which I guess is the flavor of talk for someone who's well-connected in D.C, Wall Street and various lobby groups? :)I took offense to calling Perkins' pitching for Mutual of Omaha in his pioneering documentary series as "prostitution" for a sponsor. This coming from Chris who says he uses the fame of celebrities to sell this movies and the fame of seasoned wildlife luminaries to sell his book (I wouldn't have bought this book if not for the praises). Chris mentions Attenborough several times and never once very positively. And he goes on to say that no one in Africa watches Attenborough anyway because it's all in English (during his praise of Cynthia Moses' work). I'm not so sure I get that argument, unless of course Attenborough's work cannot be translated to any African language. The book skims on some interesting but controversial topics. Raising funds for making a film suits someone who's got name, fame or connections to those with the required traits. Obviously, it's something which Chris is really good at but there's not much advice for someone who does not want to take that route. Not much was said on what happens with the money. For example, the movie 'Whales' took $1 million from NSF and $3 million from NWF and made more than $50 million. Is it ethical to gamble on money paid for by tax-payers (NSF) and members (NWF)? What happens to profits? Who are the buyers? Why not consider giving out documentaries for free as the are already paid for by sponsors? I was expecting more depth on this topic as this is where Chris' expertise would be as a manager/executive. Other topics that just scratches the surface is science versus filmmakers and wildlife management versus filmmakers. There's a lot more people-management skills involved in wildlife filmmaking than naturalist skills and I wished there could be more about that.I'm not a fan of personal attacks and the "my way or the highway" attitude that is a regular theme in the book. I wondered how many of those that were attacked for their documentary styles worked for Chris (Attenborough, Irwin, Brady Barr for example). Perhaps none? Not everyone likes or enjoys Brady Barr or Steve Irwin but there are also those that don't enjoy celebrity-hosted wildlife films as well, so it's probaly not fair to criticize different styles of wildlife films IMHO. Popular presenters are rebuked for not doing enough for conservation. This comes when none of Chris' films have taken on organized big-money big-power industries like oil or mining companies, instead frying little fish like poor sustenance hunters, fishermen and ranchers for conservation's sake.In the beginning Chris talks about sensationalism in a negative way, however nearly every discussion reeks of sensationalism from alligator chasing boats in a storm(really?), to elephants almost dying on film (sounds overly exaggerated) and other dramatic real-life experiences. Science seems to take a backseat except for a few superstars. Apparently all superstar scientists study primates, predators or other such totem species and successful wildlife films revolve around those. It is unfortunate given that we have millions of species and not much is known about them outside the science world. This is a sad state because of the money involved - right from raising funds to making profits. After all, other than the most diehard fans of nature, who wants to watch a documentary on naked mole rats or gut nematodes of a zebra? There's also the occasional hypocrisy in topics ranging from staging to shooting ethics. For example, in the ethics discussion Larry Engel chooses to just shoot a dying elk so as to not interfere with wildlife, but in the next few pages a cameraman's act of removing whale louse (whale lice) from a whale is praised. It's still a good book to read but it is misleading to think it's the state of the industry (if it is, then I'm horrified). It's more like a personal philosophy on making wildlife films. I only have more questions about the "secrets" of making wildlife films after reading this book and thought it was very biased.

This book sheds light on what really takes place behind the scenes in the making of wildlife films. It examines the history of the industry and exposes some of the controversial practices (past and present) that have become all too common. It acknowledges that, although these practices have led to some wonderful moments on film, they have often done so at a cost. Palmer shares his real life experiences and courageously questions some of his own decisions in the pursuit of “the right shot”.The book not only points out many of the questionable techniques involved in the process, it also suggests a path toward more ethical and sustainable practices that will (hopefully) lead to better, more authentic films, while reducing the impact on animals and ecosystems.Consumers and filmmakers alike will benefit from the information. The book should be required reading for anyone contemplating a career in the field of wildlife and natural history filmmaking. Finally someone on the inside has had the courage to address these issues and offer solutions on how the future of wildlife filmmaking might change for the better. A great read.

I'd always suspected that much of what we see in wildlife film and television is too good to be true. The wolf always appears when he or she should, the photographer is always in the right place to catch the cougar taking down the deer, the camera gets into the den to show the mother an her cubs. Palmer reminds us that many great cinematographers and producers of wildlife film and tv do put in the countless and thankless hours necessary to get the right shot at the right time. However, he doesn't pull punches or offer a needless defense of the oft-used practices of staging, creative editing, and downright trickery used by many producers. A great book. There's also a recent PBS special that makes a great companion.

Get book, very informative!

Many out of date directions.

I got it for my then 13 year old daughter and almost two years now she has become very knowledgeable about birds. Beautiful!!

An excellent guide for a visitor to such a large State as Texas. Detailed maps and directions, together with species lists, make this guidebook an essential tool for birders.

Great book. My first birding purchase. Good pictures and info on birds.

Very poor quality control at the printer, at least 40 pages with double print.Makes for a lousy first impression.

I was looking for something with more pictures and a ID key. This book is a little heady.

I bought this book thinking it was going to be a field identification guide, and at first I was disappointed....but as I read on I realized this book is intended to *supplement* a true field guide. And as a supplement, it is absolutely wonderful, particularly in its coverage of state and national parks of Texas. The descriptions are fabulous, and the writing style fun to read, unlike your typical "dry" field guides. I am planning a trip to Big Bend National Park in the fall, and I learned more about the park in two paragraphs than I had from combing 2 books and dozens of web sites. I also like how Kutac will give you the precise streets or stretches of field where certain species were found. My only complaint is the lack of coverage in certain areas (I live in Denton county and it would have been neat to find out what's been spotted here), but I can appreciate that it's very difficult to cover all of Texas in one book. Most of the birding "hot spots," parks, and cities do get treatment, and the information and insights should be very helpful to beginners and experienced birders alike. Perhaps future editions will bring additional contributions to fill in some of the holes.
