Lots of info for human use of the same products.If I can find paperbacks, I plan to give entire family a book for Christmas.

Mr. Allison was a long-time CEO of a major US bank, BB&T Corporation, and is now CEO of the Cato Institute. He writes with authority about the causes of the 2007-2008 financial crisis and how things looked from the perspective of a private sector leader. He also relates with pride that BB&T weathered the storm far better than most banks, without a single loss quarter.Many observers have blamed the financial crisis (and ensuing recession) on reckless speculation by executives at banks that were “too big to fail” and knew it. As the story goes, they took excessive risks that would boost their compensation as long as the good times lasted, secure in the knowledge that when the bubble burst the government would have to bail their banks out. “Wall Street greed” was the shorthand reference by Senator John McCain (during his 2008 presidential bid) and the Occupy Wall Street protestors alike.Allison paints a very different picture. While readily conceding the existence of Wall Street greed, which in his view was not an entirely new phenomenon, he suggests that private sector mistakes varied from one bank to another and could hardly have caused a $3 trillion housing bubble (overvaluation that would inevitably have to be reversed because prices only clear when supply equals demand). The real problem, he asserts, is major flaws in government policies and actions as the housing bubble developed compounded by panicky blunders during the crisis.For example, the Federal Reserve provided too much credit for too long under Chairman Alan Greenspan, contributing to the common delusion that the situation was sustainable because the Fed would never allow a financial crisis to happen. Then incoming Chairman Ben Bernanke jammed on the monetary brakes, bringing about an inverted yield curve that forced banks to search for higher yield (and risk) investments – only to revert to radical rescue efforts as one major institution after another got into trouble. While the Fed’s moves might have been appropriate for a liquidity crisis, the true issue was solvency in most cases as the result of excessive leverage and under-performing assets.The FDIC, Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac, the FHA, the SEC, and a bipartisan assortment of political leaders are also criticized. Allison’s points are clear, stated with authority, and ring true. Even if you aren’t convinced by his version of the story, it is well worth reading to see what other observers and the media may have missed.As for suggested solutions, Allison’s free market ideas may seem a bit extreme. The country is not going to eliminate the Federal Reserve and revert to a gold standard, for example, so it might be more to the point to focus on reining in the Fed’s penchant for focusing on the full employment part of its dual mandate while taking a very relaxed attitude towards inflation.And while the concluding chapters about the philosophical differences between liberals and conservatives, etc. are interesting, hoping for a return to following the Constitution as it was originally intended seems rather futile. It might be more to the point to focus on finding a more constructive path forward than the country has been on in recent years.

This book tells something of what happened to the American economy since 2008, somewhat earlier for that matter. The author is a retired CEO of a major financial institution who is a major player in Cato, a libertarian "think tank". Since things are somewhat better it might seem behind the times to read it now but it still has importance today. The issues then are still important now and probably not better understood than they were. A reading of the book provides some understanding of what happened and what is happening. The book also directs the reader to other contemporary texts and to some libertarian classics. The book is neither long nor difficult and I am not an economist. If you are interested in the U.S. economy this will be of interest and worthwhile even if you don't see yourself as a libertarian or conservative.

I started researching the cause of the home industry/financial meltdown in 2007, forming my own opinion, and was interested in someone else’s opinion/conclusion. John Allison’s background certainly qualifies him as a credible source to learn about why and how the crisis occurred. He cites too much government regulation that was poorly designed and grossly mismanaged; and that if community banking had been allowed to maintain prudent lending standards subprime loans would not have exploded.Other reviews criticize his writing style and in the last chapters his partiality to Ayn Rand’s philosophy (I agree that did not advance the subject matter). His writing could have been more polished but I found it down-to-earth and an easy read—as contrasted with other arcane, erudite, and pedantic writings about the crisis. Those who favor big government as master over and regulator of markets obviously disagree with his conclusion. However, to those folks I have asked the following: “Why did community banks in the late 70s depart from prudent lending standards/guidelines and subsequently lend to anyone?”I think Allison answers that convincingly in an easy-to-understand manner that a layman can understand. His analyses/explanations also confirmed my findings in 2007 of the cause of the meltdown.

Well-argued case for a return to a free market economy where the government stops trying to manipulate everything with it's crony capitalism. Unfortunately, I don't see anything changing. The system is too entrenched the way it is and not enough Main Street Americans know about it or care enough to take the time to educate themselves about it. It's a revolving door between Wall Street and K Street. Glad to see that at least some leaders in the industry are willing to write about the flaws in the system.

This was another good book written with real world perspective from a business leader who was in the trenches during the financial meltdown. I was introduced to Austrian economics about 5 years ago and the themes in this book reinforce many of the concepts, especially malinvestment (the author calls in mininvestment) and how the fed policies make it possible.

Everyone who can think should read this book. Even if you disagree with Allison's solutions after reading his book, you will have gained knowledge that is important for you and your family. Money and banking knowledge is no longer something to avoid as the policies today are directly affecting you and your family. Unless you like to evade information that is in your self-interest to understand, then you need to read Allison's great book and try understand the issues he raises.

This book was somewhat interesting in that it comes from the perspective of a regional bank CEO who was actually managing during the recent financial crisis. His point of view is a bit predictable but highly believable. The book is not as juicy as some of those getting into the activities on Wall Street at the time. It is, however, a good read if you are looking for another fair point of view.

About the Author

Hans Boersma is the J. I. Packer Professor of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, Canada. Before coming to Regent College in 2005, Boersma taught for six years at Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia. He also served several years as a Pastor. Boersma has written of a number of books, most recently Embodiment and Virtue in Gregory of Nyssa: An Anagogical Approach. He is also the author of Heavenly Participation: The Weaving of a Sacramental Tapestry; of Nouvelle Theologie and Sacramental Ontology: A Return to Mystery; and of Violence, Hospitality, and the Cross: Reappropriating the Atonement Tradition.Matthew Levering is Perry Family Foundation Professor of Theology at Mundelein Seminary. He serves as co-editor of two theological quarterlies, Nova et Vetera and The International Journal of Systematic Theology. I picked up this series on a whim and I’m not disappointed. While the story seems to have similarities to Overlord, the main characters are different in their approaches.Diablo has always been a solo player but now finds himself part of a group of cute girls who all need his Over Powered abilities.The internal monologue is always amusing but he seems to be a great Role Player as he knows just what to say as a Demon Lord from Another World.The girls are okay but a little too dependent on the male protagonist.

Great addition to the series. I would say better than than the first two, the stakes actually start getting real, and there are some darker moments which I liked. As always, the fan service is over the top sometimes, but it's used sparingly, thankfully.

It just gets better and better as you read more volumes. I enjoyed this volume especially since it means the next one is gonna come out which is my favorite. There's more battles in this one than previous volumes which is super rad.

I have purchased all the books prior to this one and each get better. Read both 4 and 5 in one afternoon and now hoping that 6 comes out real soon for now I will just reread all 5 again.

The cover art Made me think there was going to be some gender bending magic at play, but was a pleasant surprise. You can't judge a book by its cover.☺

If you like anime, manga or light novels in general, this one is worth the read. Not as overtly ecchi as the anime version, but still with it's funpoints

Placed an pre-order thinking it was the light novel based on clicking the image and it leading to the light novel, ended up with a manga I didn't want or need because they later changed the listing.

Rose is awesome and Diablo was a badass, enough said.

The blessing seems at times a curse: the character has no friends, can't do well in school, is out of shape, and hints frequently at suicide. The discontent of Holden Caulfield is almost without limit (the astute reader notices that the NYC adventure is in fact narrated from an mental asylum in California).I don't know if 'EitB' will sell as well as 'CitR' (which outsold 6 of the 7 Harry Potter books), but, pound for pound, its pages are just as valuable.Like CitR, EitB is about "phoniness". But, unlike CitR, it *explains* phoniness: why it evolved, when/where it is likely to appear, and why we sometimes can't stop ourselves. The book is about our own thoughts, and since we think about ~everything, the concepts have near-universal applicability. Forewarned is forearmed (at least for a certain type of person), and readers will therefore be able to use EitB to improve their health and wealth with superior decision making. However, more interesting to me, is that *some* readers will inherit a repertoire of skills for optimized hyper-phoniness. These people will be world-class persuaders -- eventually, every leader will need to know (or at least name) the ideas presented here, if only for self-defense.This cognitive science book focuses on "ugly information", ie the kind that you don't want to show to other people. It is hard to talk about these ideas with one's friends. EitB is about disgraceful things -- things that we try not to admit, that we try not to talk about, and that we have in fact **evolved not to even think about**. After digesting the book's lessons, the reader will better understand not only [1] why our world has problems, but also [2] why some of those problems cannot be solved using traditional explanations (ie, explanations that take the form of straightforward verbal persuasion).As I hinted in the first paragraph, Elephant in the Brain is certainly not for everyone. The ideas presented are very unflattering, and, despite the authors' lighthearted attempts to backpedal the significance of their work by talking about the moon landing or whatever, the explanations in EitB are in fact informative, accurate, relevant, and significant. If anyone asks me, readers are in danger of replicating Holden Caulfield's experience of overwhelming frustration. Some people can't handle the truth, Plato's Allegory of the Cave, etc etc, ya know? This is one of those. If you're into that, you know what to do! Buy it!

I wish I'd noticed before ordering this book that the authors are not psychologists (one is an economist (and not a behavioral economist) the other is a software engineer). I've read other books on this topic (Kahneman, Ariely, etc) and this is not even a very good overview of the key ideas in the field. This is a book of speculation without much evidence. Makes lots of sweeping claims about human nature without substantive evidence or engagement with readily available counter-evidence. Also frustrating was the uncritical use of terms (e.g., humans are always self-interested — which is either (a) needs to be really carefully discussed or (b) an uninteresting tautology — this fell into (b) ) I thought that the fact that this was OUP guaranteed it'd be high quality. I was very disappointed.This isn't to say that what was in this book is false. Much of what's here is plausible and follows fairly obviously from much of what's written in evolutionary biology. There's just little here that goes beyond that which are the obvious implications and saying something new. The authors say that no one's ever written on this in the past but nothing they said here appeared new or original to me.

If this book didn't make you uncomfortable, you didn't understand it. It's a really wonderful and eye-opening book.Simler and Hanson ask you to consider that evolutionary hold-overs motivate even your most selfless acts. The Elephant in the Brain (because it's about a big thing in our brain that we don't acknowledge) argues that many of our actions are motivated by a desire to cultivate allies and mates and, to cultivate effectively, humans have learned to lie others and ourselves. We've learned to fool ourselves into thinking we're pretty great because that makes it easier to fool others into thinking we're pretty great. Our brains evolved succeed in a social setting.You can argue their explanation is an incomplete understanding of human behavior. The Elephant in the Brain isn't meant to be a handbook of the human brain, able to explain every single thing people do. It's meant to highlight a part of our thinking we willfully ignore. One of the authors is an economist, but the book also draws heavily on psychological and evolutionary research. We typically think of donations as acts of pure selflessness--motivated by a "warm glow" from helping others--but Simler and Hanson point to some contradictions.-We typically do not do research on the organizations we donate to.-We are more often motivated by individual stories rather than statistics on effectiveness.-We rarely keep quiet about our donations and most donations are not anonymous. Even "anonymous" donations aren't kept quiet.If charity was all about helping others and nothing more, we'd be more careful about where the money goes and wouldn't be so concerned with advertising our benevolence. Charity, Simler and Hanson argue, is an advertisement: a way to show off to others so we can signal success and get allies.Don't make the mistake in thinking that this a conscious concern; it's more of an explanation as to why the glow is warmer for some acts of charity rather than others. Telling people about our donations feels better than keeping quiet. Helping a person we can identify feels better than helping statistical abstractions that represent people. Our ancestors who were apt at visible giving in a way that felt genuine were more likely to proliferate because they had more allies and better mates. Natural selection made us charitable, but in a weird way.To their credit, Simler and Hanson don't think humans are terrible people or donations shouldn't occur. They acknowledge multiple times that these hidden motives can have wonderful results. We should just be aware of how easily we can fool ourselves.

The author presents the material in the manner of a series of labyrinths, that is to say, it is done like an an intricate combination of paths in which it is difficult to find one's way or to reach to the exit. Without a doubt, the author is an expert with Solidwotks, so he does know the CAD software very well, but the student who is attempting to learn Solidworks is steadily forced or squeeze through the text in a torturous, seemlingly endless series of steps to create the CAD models with his often unclear written instructions and poorly shown graphics. Projet 10 covers additive manufacturing - 3D printing. This subject has nothing to do with Solidworks, and should not be covered in a textbook of this name. The author is verbose to the extreme. It is the unfortunate student who has to suffer through his long, boring and writing.The book is organized in 10 projects or chapters with a total of 757 pages. Project 2 on fundamentals of parts modeling is straight forward enough, it only has 601 steps over 104 pages to cover 3 parts. Project 3 on fundamentals of assembly modeling has 513 steps in 98 pages, only covered one assembly. Project 4 fundamentals of drawing has 507 steps over 92 pages, covered just one part drawing and one assembly drawing. Project 5 on extrude and revolve features, has 648 steps over 96 pages, and only covered 4 parts for a flash light assembly. Project 6 of the book on swept, lofted and additional features got worse, it has a total of 985 painful steps, over 94 pages to create just 4 parts and 4 assemblies to build the flashlight. I found in back of the chapters, the author presents several exercises which are very straight forward and are much more useful to students to learn the material than from following the main text.The very long text in each project forces the reader to jump back and forth between reading the step by step instructions, and then to the CAD session in progress. With so many steps involved in each task, and the instruction not too clear, one can get stuck at a point and not be able to continue the learning process. After many steps and pages, the reader is typically confused and frustrated. The reader then has to resort to other way to overcome the log jam. I went to Google to search for the answers on a particular command, or to the Solidworks help website for examples of doing the task. Often times, the answers are better found there then from this text. It appears to me that the author simply does not understand how students learn such a subject. Instead of showing the student with short understandable examples, he forces the student through a digestive track being subjected to grinding, squeezing, digestive juices, and blind groping to reach the unfortunate other end. I would also liken the process as sitting down to eat a meal and asked to eat a whole roast pig in one sitting. Students learn best in bite size unit. Not with a monster size Goliath of a turkey.Other modern CAD textbook authors present similar CAD subjects to the student by showing the student the the task and commands at hand, illustrates with examples, and explains the options and parameters connected to the command, so the student is never at a loss to what it is, what to do, how, and why.For the same subject material, I suggest CAD students check out "SOLIDWORKS 2017 and Engineering Graphics" by Randy Shih; "SoliwRorks 2016, A Tutorial Approach, 3rd Edition, by Sham Tickoo;, and "Solidworks 2017 Learning by Doing,", Tutorial Books.Reviewed by Luther Nieh, mehanical engineer, 08/11/2018

The tutorial video's sound is too low. I have a good new desktop and a speaker and turn on 100% of the volume, but I still can't hear it. My ears must touch the screen, but I still hear the voice too very low. I feel disappointed. When I watch any Youtube video, I only turn on the volume 50%. For this tutorial video, 100% of the volume, but I still can't hear well.
