Great read! I've told EVERYBODY it should be required reading for all Americans. Inspiring. Made me want to NEVER be a "sugar cookie" (gotta read the book!).

I absolutely love my special edition "Let It Go" issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. I devoured it the second I laid hands on it and I am loving all of the tips offered inside.My advice to readers would be to take the quiz found in the front of the magazine (How to use this guide). It helps you navigate the issue and giving you actionable steps to help manage your stress based on your answers.My responses led me to be known as a "Wise Worrier", couldn't be more fitting. I have already tried several steps including Loving Kindness and Walking Meditation and I am feeling much more relaxed and centered. It's funny because I have tried, and failed, adding meditation to my routine before but I just can't seem to calm my mind while I am sitting still. Four stories about 20-something people with dysfuntional social lives. The Summer Blonde story is about a sexy girl who cheats on her lame boyfriend, and the obsessive loner who fantasizes about her. Hawaiian Getaway is about an overweight 27 year old, out of a job, and has trouble with men. These stories were written in the late 90's, a time when bulky computers were the norm, starbucks wasn't full of laptops, and nobody surfed the web from an iPhone. It was a time when we talked on the phone, made plans to meet and showed up, and wrote with pens and paper.I wonder if today's 20-somethings will be able to relate to any of this?

WOW ....Tomine always makes me think when I read his work. I had to look at myself and think if I was as negative as the Summer Blonde lead character. Not only does this have stunning drawings but, Adrian really knows how to capture a person and dissect them. If you enjoy any of Adrian's work I suggest you write him an old fashioned hand letter and thank him. He doesn't believe in FB or other social Media, nor should he.....his work will be passed down like old mythology on onion skin paper through the sounds of harps--or just paper and old prints not destroyed by revolutions of the future. ENJOY

Tomine gives the reader an intimate look into the lives of about a dozen pitiful, often bordering on creepy or pathetic, characters in 4 different stories. The dialog is fluid, the landscapes are simple but well crafted, and the characters mannerisms are well articulated through the art.I'd love to give it a five star review, but the author did too good a job making me feel creeped out by the end of it.

I'm a huge fan of Tomine's work (Shortcomings is one of my favorite graphic novels of all time) and I really enjoyed this work.Tomine specializes in characters who feel both utterly normal and like the worst bits of ourselves dragged up to the light -- he has a genius for portraying an awkward self-loathing that feels completely real. These four stories are about very different protagonists, but they all share a certain loneliness and an anger/resentment that bubbles up in different ways.A really fabulous read, if sometimes painful.

Just like his other two books of collections, this one is another SLAP in your FACE, when it comes to your emotions. As I read the stories I get drawn into the charcaters' simple events, yet complex emotions surrounding those events and feel hit when the end comes. I love how all of Tomines stories are dreary, having and/or not having closure at the same time, depending on how you look at it. I also enjoy the fact that his stories get progressively longer (from the first book on) and so this books is full of 4 long stories. The graphics are good and do an amazing job at expressing emotions and reactions of the characters. Also, I love how all his comics are based on a miserable real world and are told truthfully.

I loved this from start to finish. It's truly a realistic, "slice of pie" style story. I've never read anything like this, and I was upset when I finished it because I wanted more. Finished this in one night.

I appreciated each story and enjoyed it just as much as Short Comings. There is definitely a finger print his story telling. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to read something different and enjoys watching paneled train wrecks.

I love Adrian so much. It's just as good as you think it'll be

It is good if you do not understand it the first time and has a good map to follow the break down of step to find the problem. I deals mostly with HP laptops but the problems are the same no matter what computer it is. They all hsve the same standard part in them but with different part numbers. I enjoyed it and know more about then now when looking or going to repair it. to look at what part to test.

Easy to read and understand with a lot of pictures and information covering many Laptops and how to take care of and enjoy having them.

This book was neither easy to read nor particularly informative -- well, it might have been, had it been written in English. The translation was abominable; as soon as I seemed to be getting the gist of a description the poor translation got in the way. I also didn't find the illustrations, such as there were, to be at all useful. I am no novice to PC repair and upgrading; I've built about 50 machines over the past twenty years and have done all facets of hardware and software repair and upgrading(from DOS through Windows 8, and a even a few versions of Linux, running on everything from 286 machines through the latest offerings from Intel and AMD). I have had less experience with laptops, although I have done basic upgrades and even replaced one motherboard. I don't mind doing internet research, but I'm old-fashioned enough to like to have a good hard copy reference book -- THIS WASN'T IT!

Understanding is based on the explanation of the physical behavior of materials under load and then modeling this behavior to develop the theory. Emphasis is placed on the importance of satisfying equilibrium, compatibility of deformation, and material behavior requirements. Unique Features The following is a list of some of the more important features of the text. Summaries. The "procedure for analysis" and "important points," sections provide a guide for problem solving and a summary of the concepts. Photographs. Many photographs are used throughout the book to explain how the principles of mechanics of materials apply to real-world situations. In some sections they show how materials deform or fail under load in order to provide a conceptual understanding of the terms and concepts. Problems. The problems provide a balance between easy, medium, and difficult applications. In addition, some problems require solution by computer. Extra care has been taken in the presentation and solution of the problems, and all the problem sets have been reviewed and the solutions checked and rechecked to ensure both their clarity and numerical accuracy. Contents The subject matter is organized into 14 chapters. Transverse shear is discussed in Chapter 7, along with a discussion of thin-walled tubes, shear flow, and the shear center. Chapter 8 provides a partial review of the material covered in the previous chapters, in which the state of stress resulting from combined loadings is discussed. In Chapter 9 the concepts for transforming multiaxial states of stress are presented. In a similar manner, Chapter 10 discusses the methods for strain transformation, including the application of various theories of failure. Chapter 11 provides a means for a further summary and review of previous material by covering design applications of beams and shafts. In Chapter 12 various methods for computing deflections of beams and shafts are covered. Also included is a discussion for finding the reactions on these members if they are statically indeterminate. Chapter 13 provides a discussion of column buckling, and lastly, in Chapter 14 the problem of impact and the application of various energy methods for computing deflections are considered. Sections of the book that contain more advanced material are indicated by a star (*). Time permitting, some of these topics may be included in the course. Furthermore, this material provides a suitable reference for basic principles when it is covered in other courses, and it can be used as a basis for assigning special projects. Alternative Method of Coverage. Some instructors prefer to cover stress and strain transformations first, before discussing specific applications of axial load, torsion, bending, and shear. One possible method for doing this would be first to cover stress and its transformation, Chapter 1 and Chapter 9, followed by strain and its transformation, Chapter 2 and the first part of Chapter 10. The discussion and example problems in these later chapters have been styled so that this is possible. Also, the problem sets have been subdivided so that this material can be covered without prior knowledge of the intervening chapters. Chapters 3 through 8 can then be covered with no loss in continuity. Special Features Organization and Approach. In order to aid both the instructor and the student, the contents of each chapter are organized into well-defined sections. Selected groups of sections contain an explanation of specific topics, followed by illustrative example problems and a set of homework problems. The topics within each section are often placed in subgroups denoted by boldface titles. The purpose of this is to present a structured method for introducing each new definition or concept and to make the book convenient for later reference and review. Furthermore, important terms in the chapter have been highlighted in boldface to provide a convenient means for review. Chapter Contents. Each chapter begins with a photo to illustrate a broad range application of the material within the chapter. The "chapter objectives" are then provided to give a general overview of the material that will be covered. Procedures for Analysis. The example problems are then solved using this outlined method in order to clarify its numerical application. It is to be understood, however, that once the relevant principles have been mastered and enough confidence and judgment have been acquired, the student can then develop his or her own procedures for solving problems. This feature provides a review or summary of the most important concepts in a section and highlights the most significant points that should be realized when applying the theory to solve problems. Conceptual Understanding. Through the use of photographs placed throughout the book, examples of the theory are provided in order to illustrate some of its more important conceptual features and instill the physical meaning of many of the terms used in the equations. Example Problems. All the example problems are presented in a concise manner and in a style that is easy to understand. New examples have been added throughout the text, and some from the previous edition have been shortened. Homework Problems. Numerous problems in the book depict realistic situations encountered in engineering practice. It is hoped that this realism will both stimulate the student's interest in the subject and provide a means for developing the skill to reduce any such problem from its physical description to a model or symbolic representation to which the principles may be applied. Throughout the book there is an approximate balance of problems using either SI or FPS units. Furthermore, in any set, an attempt has been made to arrange the problems in order of increasing difficulty. The answers to all but every fourth problem are listed in the back of the book. To alert the user to a problem without a reported answer, an asterisk (*) is placed before the problem number. Answers are reported to three significant figures, even though the data for material properties may be known with less accuracy. Although this might appear to be poor practice, it is done simply to be consistent and to allow the student a better chance to validate his or her solution. All the problems and their solutions have been independently checked for accuracy. A solid square is used to identify problems that require a numerical analysis or computer application. Appendices. The appendices of the book provide a source for review and a listing of tabular data. Appendix A provides information on the centroid and the moment of inertia of an area. Appendices B and C list tabular data for structural shapes, and the deflection and slopes of various types of beams and shafts. Appendix D, which is titled "Review for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam," contains typical problems, along with their partial solutions, that are commonly used on FE exams. These problems may also be used for review and practice in preparing for class examinations. Accuracy Checking. The edition has undergone rigorous accuracy checking and proofing of pages. Besides the author's review of all art pieces and pages, Karim Nohra of the University of South Florida and Scott Hendricks of Virginia Polytechnic Institute rechecked the page proofs twice, and together reviewed the entire Solutions Manual. Supplements. Several instructor's supplements are available with this text. An instructor's solutions manual was prepared and typeset by the author. It has been completely checked for accuracy. I got the paperback and I'm here to tell you right now not to get it. It is a copy in black and white stuck with a cheap paperback print of a book cover where it even says in the top left-hand corner of the book that it is not to leave (at least on mine) the subcontinent of India. Just rent or buy an American hardback and skip this mess. It was cheaply packaged - wrapped in paper with tape wrapped around some of it - and arrived half-crushed. It's missing tables that come in really handy as a student, and I'm not sure that it really is all the 9th edition. Be very cautious!

Totally awesome had everything I need to cover the materials I was studying in class.

What can I say. It's a typical required book for Engineering Majors. It has some pretty cool examples in the beginning, but towards the end it's a little tedious and looses touch with real world applications.It also does not do a great job at explaining shear/moment diagrams. Some other books give great examples and charts about distributed loading. That area is touched upon heavily in the EIT, or FE, exams.

It cheap and thats why I bought it. For the price its great, but shipping is from India and will take a while. If you need it quick, dont waste your time. Has page numbers but no way to know what chapter your on. But for $20, it will work!

Note: this is the soft cover version. I noticed someone complaining that they didn't know so I thought I'd throw that in.That said, since it is the soft cover version, it does not come with the handy spreadsheet listing known moduli that are kinda needed to do the problems. On top of that, the book is in black and white. Now for the most part this doesn't change a thing, but there are several problems that are quite hard to read because of this.Upside is that it's significantly cheaper than the hardcover!

It's just the same of the original book. Not color though but do the same job! Helped me a lot! Oh, forgot to say that is Hibbeler, so is always great!

Seems to be an accurate duplication of the much more expensive hardcover version. However, some important differences to note are: -The entire contents are black and white (a graph referring to a red line and a blue line is difficult to understand) -There aren't any reference formulas or moduli in the front or back cover of the book. (several homework problems require this information.)

What I read was appropriate to my circumstances. I was still not ready to make my choice, but I had a better understanding of the situation in front of me. I wrote down the hexagram, and took notes on what I Ching told me.Then I lost my notes. Because I still needed to make my decision, I tossed the three coins again, and went to the hexagram they told me to study.I was astonished. I was told to go to the same hexagram I had been directed to the first time. The chances of this happening were one in 4,096. I Ching is magic, I concluded. I wrote down the hexagram, and took notes on what it told me about my situation.Several days later I found my first notes. It turned out that with two tosses of the coins I had been directed to two different hexagrams. Nevertheless, in each case what I read was relevant to my situation. Each hexagram helped me make a difficult decision that turned out to be in my interest.I Ching is not magic. In a sense it is even more remarkable. It does not serve as a sorcerer, but as a skilled psychologist, one who asks the right questions, helps you to understand aspects of your subconscious mind, and who helps you to solve your problems.Astrology is somewhat the same. The next time you read your horoscope in a newspaper, do not read what it says for your sign. Read what it says for another sign. If you are facing a problem in your life you will probably find that the writing for the other sign is helpful. Then read your sign. It too is helpful. Finally, read the horoscope in another newspaper, and see what it says for your sign.There will probably not be any similarity in what the two different horoscopes say about your sign. Nevertheless, each will be helpful.I have never worked with tarot cards. I suspect that they work the same way. I Ching, astrology, and tarot are evocative. In the process they help you in ambiguous situations.The use of the yarrow-sticks or the coins is a way to encourage one who consults I Ching to believe that there is something super natural in its working. What would be less psychologically interesting, but equally effective would be to use a roulette wheel with 64 slots, or to cut 64 small pieces of paper, write one to sixty four on the pieces, put them into a hat, shuffle the hat, close your eyes, and pick a piece of paper. Any one of the 64 hexagrams can give you helpful insights and advice.Epictetus said that a gambler cannot determine the roll of the dice. He can determine what he will do when the dice stop rolling.I Ching will not tell the future. It will not give you a winning lottery number. It will not tell you which horse will win a race. It will not tell you which stocks will gain in value, and which will lose. It will not tell you that next week you will receive a letter from a former love interest you have neither seen for years nor been able to forget. It will help you decide how to respond to that letter, if you received it last week.

I have consulted the I Ching for most of my life, and I bought this edition because the one I had was stolen from my library.Now I am a hard-core scientist and an agnostic, but sometimes things happen...I am not going to try to explain what is happening here, neither for myself nor for others.It is something to be explored, and like music, poetry, maths, chess, gardening, quantum physics ...what-have-you, sometimes you get entangled, sometimes you don't.If you do with this book, it will be a fulfilling lifetime affair with someone you never really get to know.

This book is amazing and a keeper for me for life. The translation and interpretation is very clear and easy to understand. It is the kind of book that just "comes alive and right off the page" if you connect with it. It makes an excellent read anytime because it is very inspirational as well. I read it at night before sleeping, and it seems that the wisdom that it imparts has affected my life in a positive, most profound way!

Brilliant advice and fantastic translation. My only criticism is just how much liberty Wilhelm seems to take with his personal interpretations of the text. He gives a great reference point and in many cases vital perspective regarding ancient Chinese culture, but as Jung illustrates in his interpretation of his own reading in the foreward, the text itself is meant to be interpreted by the asker in the moment of asking. Just remember that, while he is a scholar, and well versed in the paradigm of the eastern mind, he is still a man of the west.

I only recently came across this text, having read Master Huang's work initially and I find that both are complementary to each other. Wilhelm's relationship with Jung has increased the hidden meanings behind many of Jung's words that I read in tandem with my tao studies. It's really beautiful how the tone and theme of one book shows up in the basic language of another simply because they were in correspondence. Anyway, totally easy to read and very concise with melding Eastern and Western thought, especially as it is the first instance of translation from someone who actually embedded himself in Chinese culture in order to attain the knowledge to begin with.

If I could award six stars to a book then this would be the one. It is absolutely ESSENTIAL for anyone who wishes to undertake a serious study of the I Ching, as it contains not only the most authoritative reading of the text ever published but also a wealth of supporting commentaries that bring further insight into the minds of the great scholars who have read and attempted to divine its full meaning. And all within the same book! I also highly recommend the companion work, Understanding the I Ching, which provides many other valuable insights from the father-and-son Wilhelm team. But beware! There is nothing simple or superficial about either of these books and both will require long hours of patient study and reflection before the reader can begin to understand them. But I cannot think of any other time that would be better spent, especially if the reader is interested in the origins and the history of the religious impulse in man.

I use the I Ching earnestly and frequently for its intended purpose (divination) and find Wilhelm is always my guy. Next to him on the shelf are the Blofeld, Ritsema, and Wen translations. Wilhelm's ability to weave in the commentaries and elucidate the symbolism of the poetic imagery is unmatched in these other versions. Only bring Blofeld in when you're totally stymied.

I have been a Jungian since 1968 and I think this is probably the most valuable book in English concerning the I Ching. I think it is a must.
