From the Author

Our goal is to make affordable, easy to follow reading programs to treat dyslexia. Many OG programs are dull and students lose interest, especially those with ADD/ADHD. Children often love our program because the exercises are short and our phonics games (online as well as physical) make reinforcement fun. Our programs are extremely easy to use, just open the book and teach.

As a Dyslexia specialist prior to my spinal cord injury, I was looking for a book to use over the summer with our youngest who ALSO has Dyslexia. This is a great book. My only recommendation would be to include more examples for practice. While you can see if they "get" it or not with what is listed, for those who are NOT educators, parents who wish to use this at home, more examples for the novice would be best. I can add-on what I know is lacking. As well, phonemic awareness is a HUGE factor in reading and there aren't any examples to follow after or prior to the lessons. A small bit about "deletion of the initial phoneme" with a few examples would be so helpful as so many do not know that this goes hand-in-hand with reading. There is a book for that but, you must purchase it separate. Many will not because, as stated, they do not know the importance.I have things to use at home with our children, both younger children have Dyslexia with one having Dysgraphia as well. God has a sense of humor as I earned my degree and certifications many years before they were born. Orton-Gilliangham never fails with quality materials and has not here. As I do not have all of my supplies at home and am no longer working, this was a good filler for us to use and it's serving our son well. The lessons are short- very short. As is the case with so many who have Dyslexia (and I am referencing Dyslexia as that is my area of expertise and so many who are slow-to-grasp reading concepts DO have a form of Dyslexia that has gone without a diagnosis- the numbers are startling), they also have short attention spans. With the shorter lessons, it is very possible to complete a lesson in 10-minutes or less. That said, there should be some review of previous concepts as well as (was mentioned), the phonemic awareness portion of the lesson added. If this makes the cost of the book increase- then it is well worth it to get a complete lesson as well as one which is well-rounded.Finally, so many parents I have met over the years feel that they CANNOT teach their child to read and this book would empower them to do so...and to tutor at home. Learning does not happen in a classroom alone and with parents being a child's first teacher, they must know that they, too, can help their child learn to read. I have heard so often that they cannot. Following this book is a great stepping stone for anyone. Again, it is a stepping stone, not the compete mountain...so-to-speak!

I have a new very dyslexic step granddaughter, whom has recently joined our family. She was reading at a first grade level (she is 11) and in the 5th grade and is very frustrated as not being able to read. I decided she needed dire help so I looked around and found this wonderful book to help her with and we work together at least 3 times a week. She transposes words and letters and beginning and ending sounds like ch, fr, ng, ck. She also has a hard time with letters b, d, p, as they look the same to her. This book is amazing and it also has a site you can go to for free flash cards to print and more lessons to work with them on. This book has helped her to go from reading at a 1st grade level to reading at a 3rd grade level in just a month! Her teacher is amazed with her progress. I am impressed with this book and highly recommend it if your child has learning issues.

We have been seeing steady improvement in our sons reading AND writing! He started this workbook in September at the recommendation of another parent. After trying many other programs that did not work this was a last ditch effort that we now wish would have been our first! His reversals (letters & numbers) have been significantly reduced, there truly are NO MORE TEARS, and he is progressing faster than with any other program! We would recommend this workbook to ANYONE who’s child has dyslexia! It does help when you remain consistent and use it daily.

My nine year old son is a non-dyslexic struggling reader. I homeschool him and have gone through 2 different reading curriculums this year with little success. Stumbled upon Blast off to Reading and have to say it's going GREAT! We started over with phonics and my son is now breezing right through the book and making progress like he's never made before.

Great book to walk through the different rules to reading. In particular, I thought the vowel lessons were helpful because in school, children are often told "when two vowels go a-walkin, the first one does the talkin" but this is only true about half the time! I like that it also comes with free flashcards to easily review the previous lessons. The lessons are concise and address many rules for reading and writing. I do wish that the pages were perforated so I could easily rip out the pages I want so it can lay flat on a table. However, fairly pleased overall!

Yes!!!! That’s all I can say! We’ve been struggling with our left handed, right brained kiddo with reading since kindergarten. He’s a very bright kid, but nearing the end of second grade he was falling so far behind in reading we realized that he just wasn’t learning how to read the same as everyone else, as well as showing signs of dyslexia. As a parent I was panicking because he was falling grade levels behind, so I purchased lots of tools to help me address the dyslexia and troubleshoot the learning barrier, but all I actually needed was this!! This has been amazing and it is such a relief to watch him fly through this program and actually love it!!! The “game” apps have kept his moral high, and helped him so much, even though a few of them don’t work properly on my phone, in general they’ve been great.Thank you so much Blast Off To Reading!!!!Honestly, I was in tears before this program, now I have gratitude.

I am using this to tutor a 4th grade student with dyslexia. She is doing really well with this book and the games online. I also reiterate the phonics rules with letter tiles. The combination is amazing! Her reading accuracy went up 4% in a month; i see her twice a week. It really helped to start with the basic and move at her pace. I am very pleased with this.

This is an amazing story and one that anyone in commercial theater should read. The rating is because of the ABSOLUTELY AWFUL KINDLE VERSION. I believe they scan books to get electronic versions. Apparently no one goes back and proof reads. There are so many word mistakes there are times you have to re-read many times to figure out what the author is actually saying. Terrible. This is one time I would say dump this edition and BUY THE ACTUAL BOOK!

This book is more than a little self-serving and written in a style that is now dated. Full disclosure one of the authors, Thommie Walsh was a friend of mine, and I still wasn't impressed. I never got all the way thru. Clearly the authors know the full and accurate story and that's worth knowing. But they seem to think that they changed the world of theater and I'm not so certain of that.God Bless You Thommie.

I couldn't put this book down. Anyone with the slightest interest in this show or even in theatre should pick this up. It is amazing what some of these performers would do for and to work with Bennett. To the point of clouding their judgement and making a few very big, financial, mistakes. I thought this book would be very one sided, and to a degree it is, but not as much as I thought even with the story being told from the perspective of the dancers. There are other books that talk about the process of bringing A Chorus Line to the stage, and books that mention it in passing where Bennett is discussed, but none are this in depth. As a person who loves and works in the NY theatre community, it left me wondering if I would have put up with what these people did to be in a show.

It's amazing to learn how ACL got its start, to hear the dancers' stories, to learn a bit how Broadway works! This is well written and flows easily from beginning to end.

For lovers of A Chorus Line, this is a must. Tells the story before the Broadway revival. Very interesting and readable.

I really enjoyed this book. I have been a huge fan of this musical since I first saw it in New York when I was 20 years old. However, I have to say that I have never read a book with so many typos. It seemed that almost every page had misspellings. Did anybody proof read this? Other than that, it was very good.

Fascinating :)

For those of us who grew up on this show, love it and, like me, have been lucky to be in it (waaaaay off-Broadway), or for any fan of the show, this book is truly a 'treasure trove' of information, trivia and revelations about the making and development of the original production. It also provides information about the members of the original cast and their very mixed feelings about the experience. It is a bittersweet read and I would recomend it especially to those who are fascinated by the backstage stories of this theatrical landmark.

This slim volume is a wonderful survey and recap of The Story of Civilization series. This book alone is full of astounding insights, stunning depth, breathtaking scope and staggering erudition. Another page tuner by Will Durant. I find myself gaining in perspective with each Durant authored book that I have the good fortune to read.

"The Lessons of History" is a collection of short essays based on Will and Ariel Durant’s acclaimed eleven volume "The Story of Civilization". It begins with a great disclaimer: "Only a fool would try to compress a hundred centuries into a hundred pages of hazardous conclusions. We proceed."And they succeed! The book packs a wealth of insights into a hundred pages. The authors discuss, in turn, the forces that have shaped history. The forces considered include natural (geography, biology), human behavior (character, morality), and human constructs (religion, economic systems, and government). The last essay considers the question "Is progress real?".The essay on economics argues that wealth inequality is a natural and inevitable consequence of the "concentration of ability" within a minority of a society, and this has occurred regularly throughout history. The authors state: "The relative equality of Americans before 1776 has been overwhelmed by a thousand forms of physical, mental, and economic differentiation, so that the gap between the wealthiest and the poorest is now greater than at any time since Imperial plutocratic Rome."This leads into the essay on socialism, which strives to counteract the forces that drive wealth inequality. The authors survey "socialist experiments" in ancient Sumeria, Egypt, Rome, China, and South America - all centuries before the industrial revolution. It was fascinating to read this history which contains a mixture of failures and successes. The authors argue that the trend is towards a synthesis of capitalism and socialism (rather than one system winning outright). The next essay discusses the various forms of government and descibes the special circumstances that enabled democracy to take root and flourish in the American colonies. The authors argue that many of the favorable conditions that were present in the years following the American Revolution have disappeared. The essay ends with the haunting warning: "If race or class war divides us into hostile camps, changing political argument into blind hate, one side or other may overturn the hustings with the rule of the sword. If our economy of freedom fails to distribute wealth as ably as it has created it, the road to dictatorship will be open to any man who can persuasively promise security to all; and a martial government, under whatever charming phrases, will engulf the democratic world."Hopefully this review has provided a flavor for how the authors have distilled the insights they have gained from years of study. It should not come as a surprise that the lessons gleaned from several thousand years of recorded history continue to ring true today. This is a book that I wish I'd read in high school or perhaps Freshman year of college. It's a wonderfully written study of how we got to where we are today.

Durant tries to pull lessons from his study of civilisation - covering 100 centuries in 100 pages. The book makes assertions without the detailed history, but the author pulls it off with dense prose and keen insight.A few of the most interesting ideas:- Freedom and equality are diametrically opposed- The disparity of man’s abilities make inequality inevitable in a complex society, only unable men desire equality and able men are better at bending societal rules- societies get less religious as they get more educated, however, as long as there is poverty, there will be religion- man’s motivations haven’t changed much over the centuries, we just have the luxury of inheriting a richer set of culture

I have read this book three times and I keep discovering new gems in this collection of essays by the Durants. I recommend this surprisingly short (=concise) work. Here are some of my favorite quotes:- “Democracy is the most difficult of all forms of government, since it requires the widest spread of intelligence, and we forgot to make ourselves intelligent when we made ourselves sovereign.”- “[…] the Church dares not alter the doctrines that reason smiles at, for such changes would offend and disillusion the millions whose hopes have been tied to inspiring and consolatory imaginations.”- “[…] the first condition of freedom is its limitation; make it absolute and it dies in chaos.”- “History is so indifferently rich that a case for almost any conclusion from it can be made by a selection of instances.”

Durant packs more meaning into one sentence than many do in pages of prose. Deeply erudite yet lyrically fluid writing provides pleasure in the reading. One doesn't need a broad education in the Humanities and Social Sciences to get the best from this work, but it certainly helps if one has had it.Durant's strategy for explaining the how and why of History's lessons make sense and helps readers understand to compartment their own world, yet maintain the connectedness among all the compartments.A delightful work that reminded me of what I once loved about History and Historiography.

This book goes well beyond those Learn WHATEVER in 24 hours to teach a pretty solid foundation in C#, BUT while it touts itself as being for beginners, meaning those with little to no programming experience, forget C syntax experience, the book is like Swiss cheese, leaving you frustrated trying to understand what are actually simple concepts because the author skips steps or definitions. As a result, you will definitely want a second book, like something from the Unleashed series (I have VS 2015 Unleashed) that explains the syntax in more detail along with plain english. As an example, Chapter 4 of this book goes into explaining Boolean operators, assignment operators and the like, the is blah TRUE and/or FALSE stuff. It is simple on its face, but one of the frustrations of C like languages (compared to something like Visual Basic) is that the syntax is nonsensical. That would be fine if the author would explain all of the operators being discussed in the chapter. The author will say ^= as in var1 ^= var2; results in var1 being assigned the value that is the result of var1 ^ var2Now if this is confusing...yeah, exactly, C type languages read like stereo instructions but that is fine so long as the syntax is explained as part of the lesson. In this case the author never explained what the ^ operator does. I am left pulling my hair out looking back figuring I must have skipped pages. Nope, author just forgot, so time wasted as I finally give up and go get another book, look up the table of operators to find it is the VB equivalent of XOR, meaning the result if the evaluation of var1 ^ var2 is true if var1 and var2 have opposite Boolean values, True False or False True and the result of the evaluation is false if both var1 and var2 are true or both are false. Easy right? Because I took 10 seconds to explain it which the author doesn't bother to do.While this problem is certainly not the end of the world it makes for not so smooth sailing and without other books, readers may just pull the ripcord all together and give up. So if you bite the bullet and get this book, get another C# book that is more of a dictionary style, just listing different expressions, syntax, etc so that if you get stuck on something, you can look it up elsewhere. Personally, the Unleashed books is great for this. This book plus Unleashed are a powerful combo.

This book continues the Wrox tradition of books, that teach programming in a step-by-step manner, which started in 2002. It is written in easy-to-understand English, which makes it ideal for my students. It has a very interesting table-of-content, that fo example shows cloud programming before ADO.NET. Entity Framework, for which there is no up-to-date book at the moment, is also covered. Obviously the books was written beginning with a blank page and C# 6 from the start which makes it outstanding compared to books that are refurbished every 2nd year. And it is slim compared to many other books. I read only a few chapters, so it's to early to know about errata issues.

This book had so many errors and missing instructions that it made reading this book worthless.

Very clear, or at least to me it is, as to how to use C# with Visual Studio. would recommend to those who are trying to learn C#

Exactly what I wanted. A well written beginner C# book and a great reference for when my class books don't have good examples.

Nice book for a novel student

It is certainly not for beginners. I believe one needs a strong programming background to begin C# programming with this book.

Pros: the dots are so big my kid doesn't have a hard time seeing themCons: only goes up to ten, 20 would have been nice, I didn't need 10 pages black and white and 10 pages color that has been pointless and annoying

Excellent book for practice! I bought this for my son who needed a little more practice. This was just what he needed!

My 3yr old son loves doing his "homework" thanks to this workbook. It's helping him learn not only his numbers but how to write and hold a pencil.

Really great for my 3 year old!

Just as expected!

Jerry Izenberg was a veteran boxing journalist and has many entertaining yarns to tell, and in Once There Were Giants he certainly tells them. The problem is that he tells them as more of a memoir than as a serious look at the era of heavyweight boxing from the 1960s to the 1990s.His prejudices in terms of who and what he wished to dwell are truly limiting. For a book that was supposed to begin with Sonny Liston, it spends far too many pages setting the stage for Liston's emergence and delving into the sordid history of the mafia and boxing. The last stanzas focus overwhelmingly on Mike Tyson, give short shrift to Evander Holyfield and are absolutely dismissive of Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe. It smacks very much as the observations of a cranky old man who only cares about what he cares about.Even within those limits, Izenberg is good, but not great. More words spent on secondary figures like Jerry Quarry or Earnie Shavers would have made this a much better book. Instead, he rambles on about the mafia or how his good pal so-and-so knew more about this business than anyone will ever know and things of that nature.Add to that some rather embarrassing grammatical errors and I must also ask where the editor was...My gold standard for works of this kind is Four Kings by George Kimball. Compared to that, this book gets a bronze.

I've been a big fan of the author since the 1970's but was a bit disappointed in this book. although there is a treasure trove of great material at his disposal, the author spends too many pages discussing events long before the main time frame of the book. like many writers of his generation, he seems obsessed with stories about the mob and how they operated in the "old days," many of which i'm sure are apocryphal.it's a shame more time wasn't spent on the epic fights of the era vs. glorified tales of the mob's influence on boxing in the 1930s and 1940s. once the book shifts focus to its main topic, however, it becomes highly readable and interesting, with the author's trademark humor in full bloom.all in all, a pretty good book but had the potential to be much better.

Great boxers in the heavyweight division are names that are recognized by even those who are not fans of the sport. Fighters like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman are just a few of the heavyweight champions who have left their mark both in boxing and in the world in general. That era when these and other great heavyweight boxers ruled the sport is chronicled in this terrific book by veteran writer Jerry Izenberg. There is a passage in the prologue that fits the general theme of the book and also expresses the feelings of not only the author but also many of the readers when Izenberg states that “…there will never again be a heavyweight cycle like the one that began when Sonny Liston stopped Floyd Patterson – and ended when Mike Tyson bit a slice out of Evander Holyfield’s ear.” This covers the 35 year period of 1962-1997 and Izenberg tells many great stories about many great fighters from that era. There is Sonny Liston, whom Izenberg states was the last fighter to be controlled by the Mob, a great account of all three classic fights between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Noteworthy is that Izenberg believes their third bout, the “Thrilla in Manila”, “…was the greatest fight I ever saw. Hell, I think it was the greatest fight anyone saw.” Many who have seen it will echo that sentiment. Then even more great storytelling is in store for the reader as Izenberg tells about both Spinks brothers who held the crown, Leon and Michael and of course, Mike Tyson and all of the chaos surrounding him. This book is a breeze to read, especially for fight fans who remember the days when the heavyweight championship was a title that was held in reverence and was held by one man, not by several because of various organizations who claim to be the “one” who can declare the champ. The stories about these fighters, and some of the epic bouts they fought to either gain, lose or defend their championship are ones that boxing fans will treasure for a long time.I wish to thank Skyhorse Publishing for providing a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A good book, much crisp and graceful writing, many sharp insights, but marred by extremely sloppy editing, which permitted unjustified repetition and failed to correct numerous annoying typographical errors. The presentation, therefore, is not worthy of the author.

Lots and lots of of anecdotal entertainment and behind-the-scenes history from the golden age of heavyweight boxing. My only complaint: a few glaring syntax and typo errors missed by the editor of the manuscript.

Jerry Izenberg is the best living sportswriter in the nation and has been for decades. He is insightful and readable. This is his tour de force. I plowed through this book in two days!

An insider's review and some personal memories of what was indeed the golden age of boxing.

Very good survey of the heavyweights from Sonny Liston to Evander Holyfield. There are a few historical errors, for example, Chuck Wepner did not knock Ali down with a right to the head, he stepped on his foot and hit him with a right to the body as Ali was falling. Also, Tyson did not really land any crunching punches on Bruce Seldon, he took a dive after Tyson missed,There were a few other errors also, and some possible errors in judgment, I was surprised he had Frazier ahead in the scoring in the second fight with Ali.He also doesn’t do Lennox Lewis justice, he belongs in the storied history of the giants. One of the best chapters in the book was the prelude where he talked about how the mob controlled boxing on and off for the first 60 years of the 20th century.Izenberg Is a very good writer, his conversations with Mike Tyson were fascinated also. Recommended. I give it four and a half stars because of the errors in history, otherwise it would be five.
