SUZANNE BROOKER has dedicated her life to art-making, both in studio practice and as an educator. She began her career as a teaching artist after receiving her MFA in figurative painting from California State University, Long Beach. While Suzanne Brooker’s book focuses on landscapes and the natural world, the incomparable value of classical drawing principles is that they can be applied to any subject matter. Beginning with an introduction to materials (graphite pencil is the primary medium used in the book, with brief discussion of colored pencil, charcoal, pastel and water-soluble pencils), Brooker takes the reader through the basic elements of drawing, such as line, value and form, and how specific techniques can be used to express them.For me, the meat of the book begins with Chapter 3, Light Logic and Shading Techniques. Although I have studied the basic principles covered by this chapter several times in other books and classes, and I thought I understood them, Brooker’s explanations helped me to internalize the principles in a way that I hadn’t before.What is “light logic”? “The sun touches objects in nature, creating areas of light and shadow in a predictable fashion.” Because the human brain automatically uses light logic to perceive an object, it’s an essential concept for rendering a three-dimensional form realistically. It sounds so simple – the classic drawing exercise of shading a ball or cube lighted from one side – yet it’s not at all easy to apply textbook understanding to real objects that are not balls and cubes. First you have to learn to see the highlight, core shadow and reflected light on an object in space, and then you must transfer that perception to the flat paper. I am still learning to do this, of course (I expect it to be a lifelong challenge), but I have nailed the first step: I can finally see this principle. (Now I can’t walk through a park on a sunny day without seeing core shadows on trees!)Succeeding chapters focus on step-by-step exercises for developing drawings from photo references. Many demos are included, showing various stages of drawing development. Particularly helpful are sections devoted to specific natural elements that make up a landscape, such as sky, terrain, trees and foliage, and water.Throughout the book are many examples of Brooker’s own work and those of her peers, students and classical masters. Even if you never draw, it’s a huge volume of delicious eye candy to savor. But after studying this book, I believe you will draw, because fully understanding these classic principles is likely to reinforce your passion for drawing as it did mine. When I finally grasped concepts that had been only floating peripherally in my brain before, I could not keep myself from putting them into practice.This beautiful book is a reference that I will turn to repeatedly to reinforce and remind me of what I’m learning. It also reminds me of everything I love about drawing. The many exquisite examples in the book show me what’s possible, and the instructions explain why.

This book teaches the basic techniques of drawing and how to apply them to landscape drawing. The author started by talking about the different tools and materials for drawing. She explained various terms and techniques, like foreshortening, perspective, proportion, and such. She also covered the basics like how to hold a pencil, the grid method, composition, light and shading. She talked about how to apply these concepts to a drawing when you begin a drawing.Then she specifically talked about how to draw sky, terrain, trees, and water. In each section, she provided several step-by-step demonstrations showing how to draw different types of clouds, trees, etc. The first part of the book focused on pencil drawing, but she did cover charcoal pencils, colored pencils, and pastel pencils and included one demonstration for each. Overall, I'd recommend this informative book.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.

I found this book extremely easy to understand and use. The information is practical and illuminating, especially for me. Many times a look at a landscape and just love it - but where to begin? how to interpret it and what mark or stroke will translate what I see on paper. This book goes a long way to answer some of these questions, I particularly love the section on the sky and sea, and the part on foliage is also very good.There is an awful lot of information in this book, some of it basic other more advanced, so whatever your ability this book should satisfy any landscape artist.

Chris Palmer combines the inside knowledge of a consummate industry professional with the concerns of an ethicist in this superb look at the world of environmental and wildlife filmmaking. There has always been a certain amount of tampering with reality in the field, but with a rising demand for new content that has to be on time and on budget, some producers engage in outright deceit or take moral shortcuts. Captive animals are substituted for wild ones, wild ones are provoked into uncharacteristic displays of violence in a lurid grab at ratings. Palmer himself admits that he has incorporated footage of captive animals. He's open and honest as to how his thinking has evolved, and unafraid to name those who knowingly practice deception. This informative, compelling book ends with an eight-point ethic for working and prospective filmmakers. SHOOTING IN THE WILD is an important work by an enlightened filmmaker. Highly recommended.

Over decades of watching wildlife documentaries, I had never heard (or registered) Chris Palmer's name. He's the guy behind the scenes organizing money, politics, policies, lobbying and such - the aspect of wildlife film making that most viewers blissfully ignore. Ignorance is bliss this book confirms.I came across this book as an Amazon recommendation based on a few purchases over the holidays. I thought it was an interesting topic and bought the book after its five-star rating and pages and pages of praise from the who's who of the wildlife world and a preface by Jane Goodall. Chris presents the book very well from the management perspective of the wildlife film making business. However, it's like listening to a politician's speech, which I guess is the flavor of talk for someone who's well-connected in D.C, Wall Street and various lobby groups? :)I took offense to calling Perkins' pitching for Mutual of Omaha in his pioneering documentary series as "prostitution" for a sponsor. This coming from Chris who says he uses the fame of celebrities to sell this movies and the fame of seasoned wildlife luminaries to sell his book (I wouldn't have bought this book if not for the praises). Chris mentions Attenborough several times and never once very positively. And he goes on to say that no one in Africa watches Attenborough anyway because it's all in English (during his praise of Cynthia Moses' work). I'm not so sure I get that argument, unless of course Attenborough's work cannot be translated to any African language.The book skims on some interesting but controversial topics. Raising funds for making a film suits someone who's got name, fame or connections to those with the required traits. Obviously, it's something which Chris is really good at but there's not much advice for someone who does not want to take that route. Not much was said on what happens with the money. For example, the movie 'Whales' took $1 million from NSF and $3 million from NWF and made more than $50 million. Is it ethical to gamble on money paid for by tax-payers (NSF) and members (NWF)? What happens to profits? Who are the buyers? Why not consider giving out documentaries for free as the are already paid for by sponsors? I was expecting more depth on this topic as this is where Chris' expertise would be as a manager/executive. Other topics that just scratches the surface is science versus filmmakers and wildlife management versus filmmakers. There's a lot more people-management skills involved in wildlife filmmaking than naturalist skills and I wished there could be more about that.I'm not a fan of personal attacks and the "my way or the highway" attitude that is a regular theme in the book. I wondered how many of those that were attacked for their documentary styles worked for Chris (Attenborough, Irwin, Brady Barr for example). Perhaps none? Not everyone likes or enjoys Brady Barr or Steve Irwin but there are also those that don't enjoy celebrity-hosted wildlife films as well, so it's probaly not fair to criticize different styles of wildlife films IMHO. Popular presenters are rebuked for not doing enough for conservation. This comes when none of Chris' films have taken on organized big-money big-power industries like oil or mining companies, instead frying little fish like poor sustenance hunters, fishermen and ranchers for conservation's sake.In the beginning Chris talks about sensationalism in a negative way, however nearly every discussion reeks of sensationalism from alligator chasing boats in a storm(really?), to elephants almost dying on film (sounds overly exaggerated) and other dramatic real-life experiences. Science seems to take a backseat except for a few superstars. Apparently all superstar scientists study primates, predators or other such totem species and successful wildlife films revolve around those. It is unfortunate given that we have millions of species and not much is known about them outside the science world. This is a sad state because of the money involved - right from raising funds to making profits. After all, other than the most diehard fans of nature, who wants to watch a documentary on naked mole rats or gut nematodes of a zebra? There's also the occasional hypocrisy in topics ranging from staging to shooting ethics. For example, in the ethics discussion Larry Engel chooses to just shoot a dying elk so as to not interfere with wildlife, but in the next few pages a cameraman's act of removing whale louse (whale lice) from a whale is praised.It's still a good book to read but it is misleading to think it's the state of the industry (if it is, then I'm horrified). It's more like a personal philosophy on making wildlife films. I only have more questions about the "secrets" of making wildlife films after reading this book and thought it was very biased.

This book sheds light on what really takes place behind the scenes in the making of wildlife films. It examines the history of the industry and exposes some of the controversial practices (past and present) that have become all too common. It acknowledges that, although these practices have led to some wonderful moments on film, they have often done so at a cost. Palmer shares his real life experiences and courageously questions some of his own decisions in the pursuit of “the right shot”.The book not only points out many of the questionable techniques involved in the process, it also suggests a path toward more ethical and sustainable practices that will (hopefully) lead to better, more authentic films, while reducing the impact on animals and ecosystems.Consumers and filmmakers alike will benefit from the information. The book should be required reading for anyone contemplating a career in the field of wildlife and natural history filmmaking. Finally someone on the inside has had the courage to address these issues and offer solutions on how the future of wildlife filmmaking might change for the better. A great read.

I'd always suspected that much of what we see in wildlife film and television is too good to be true. The wolf always appears when he or she should, the photographer is always in the right place to catch the cougar taking down the deer, the camera gets into the den to show the mother an her cubs. Palmer reminds us that many great cinematographers and producers of wildlife film and tv do put in the countless and thankless hours necessary to get the right shot at the right time. However, he doesn't pull punches or offer a needless defense of the oft-used practices of staging, creative editing, and downright trickery used by many producers. A great book. There's also a recent PBS special that makes a great companion.

Many out of date directions.

I got it for my then 13 year old daughter and almost two years now she has become very knowledgeable about birds. Beautiful!!

An excellent guide for a visitor to such a large State as Texas. Detailed maps and directions, together with species lists, make this guidebook an essential tool for birders.

Great book. My first birding purchase. Good pictures and info on birds.

Very poor quality control at the printer, at least 40 pages with double print.Makes for a lousy first impression.

I was looking for something with more pictures and a ID key. This book is a little heady.

I bought this book thinking it was going to be a field identification guide, and at first I was disappointed....but as I read on I realized this book is intended to *supplement* a true field guide. And as a supplement, it is absolutely wonderful, particularly in its coverage of state and national parks of Texas. The descriptions are fabulous, and the writing style fun to read, unlike your typical "dry" field guides. I am planning a trip to Big Bend National Park in the fall, and I learned more about the park in two paragraphs than I had from combing 2 books and dozens of web sites. I also like how Kutac will give you the precise streets or stretches of field where certain species were found. My only complaint is the lack of coverage in certain areas (I live in Denton county and it would have been neat to find out what's been spotted here), but I can appreciate that it's very difficult to cover all of Texas in one book. Most of the birding "hot spots," parks, and cities do get treatment, and the information and insights should be very helpful to beginners and experienced birders alike. Perhaps future editions will bring additional contributions to fill in some of the holes.

I received this book originally the year it was published, well over 20 years ago. With a few additions, it is basically the same as my first edition. I bought this one for my children, who are now taking their first ASL courses.I like how clear the illustrations are, but the reason I prefer this as a first lessons book to others on the market, is because of the hints to help remember signs, written below each description. It helps cement the new language into memory. GIRL signed like a bonnet string, for example.There are, perhaps, not enough Deaf Culture or Linguistic Theory notations in this book for a real die-hard, but for an entry-level student, it is easy to browse, organized well by topic, has a clear index & table of contents, and serves a first year student well as a vocabulary reference dictionary.

My husband and I are taking a sign language class and this was the book we needed for it. A lot of the signs aren’t used any longer so when we try to practice at home we’re never sure it that particular sign is useable or not. For the book to be so out of date and still cost $18 is a bit of a rip off and very disappointing. Each sign does have a drawing and a description written out on how your hands are supposed to be positioned and etc. The written description is very helpful because the drawing can be a bit misleading. The book as a whole is helpful to a certain point but needs to be updated more often!

A lot of ASL guides seem to do the alphabet and then start showing signs without a lot of help on how they go together. ASL is its own language and this modest little book starts off with some idioms for everyday communication. I don't think you can learn ASL from this - it's a big language - but combining it with videos online (Google ASL dictionary) you can learn and review useful phrases for greetings and quick questions and make someone feel welcome before asking (in ASL) if they'd like a pen and paper should the conversation go beyond you.

This book was published in 1995, it has not been taken care of. I feel like the price was too much for its poor condition. It had splatter on the front that appeared to be vomit, I wiped it clean with disinfectant wipes only to be just as disappointed with the interior of the book. It smells horrible and the pages are stained yellow. The entire book has heavy scratches and ware. I am not sure why they even tried to sell this book in this condition. I’m trying to learn asl and this is a horrible experience.

just started taking asl and this book was recommended by the instructor so i bought it. the book has been so handy and i love the fact that the signs we are learning are the same ones that are in the book. the reason i give it 4 out of 5 stars is i wish the movement of the hands was a little more clear or that it was actual pictures of someones hands instead of a drawing.

Older book and not perfect, but I really enjoy the way the signs are grouped a lot better than the newer books. It does a good job explaining the basics of ASL linguistics, just touching on how to form signs and the importance of facial expression and body language. However, this book is aimed at building ASL vocabulary. If you want to learn the signs that are used most often in every day conversation it is perfect. For learning the grammatical structure of ASL, taking the 20-40 signs you learn and then knowing how to put them together to form complete coherent ideas, this is not the book for it. Using this book in conjecture with the ASL green books, or as an aid to an ASL class, would be the best use of this book.

I bought this to replace books that were over 15 yrs old and starting to fall apart. I used this and other books by Elaine in conjunction with classroom instruction with a native signer. Excellent ‘ hints’ about the ‘ why’ behind the sign, they really assist in helping to remember the sign.

I don't have a context for rating the book, which is the only reason I've given it four stars rather than five. I bought Signing as a textbook for a basic ASL class, so I had a lot of help using it. My instructor was deaf, by the way, and this was her preferred book for her students. I suppose that's a pretty good recommendation in itself.My interest in ASL is communications with a deaf 7-year-old grandson, plus learning enough ASL to work in an adaptive alpine ski program.

First, there are many inaccuracies in this book. I applaud her effort, but she has not delivered. She does not treat her subjects even handedly. She fails to appreciate how success and achievement are the result of drive and determination--taking rather cheap shots at Michael Debakey. More concerning, her writing lacks objectivity. The writing style is more like a novel, which seems to have Texas-sized exaggerations and outright confabulations. Within the first 50 pages of the book, she states that the first transplant was in 1969-it was 1967. Further, for much of the information that her book contains which is not detailed, she does not cite sources. Having worked, trained, and practiced at the TMC, she lacks the medical background and understanding to deride the very approach she feigns. Hearts by Thomas Thompson is a much better book.

I've read many books (for laypeople) regarding the topic of heart transplantation and the quest for the artificial heart involving the surgeons in Houston, but this book took decades of details and made it an informative yet enjoyable read. I felt like I went along for the ride right along with them. It's impossible to truly understand and appreciate the level of dedication (and skill) these pioneers maintained to the bitter end. I plan to order copies for family members!

Enjoyed reading this book. Well written and insightful to the layperson. Amazing view into the lives/times of three great clinicians of our time - DeBakey, Cooley and Frazier.Wish I could have given it one more star. I felt it was too focused on the Texas Heart Institute; understandable considering the author and the subjects were all Texas based. There is a lot of stuff going on beyond Texas, and missing that presents a somewhat one sided perspective of the artificial heart space.

Most of the action in Ticker takes place in Houston, Texas. Artificial heart research began there in the 1960s. The 60s were a tumultuous decade, but it was also a can-do time in American history and the public perception was that the artificial heart was destined to become another American success story. Simultaneously, Americans were making great accomplishments in outer space travel. The national media wrote features about the leading heart surgeons and made them celebrities. They were compared to NASA’s first astronaut team. Unfortunately, the advances in artificial heart research proved to be modest at best. Creating a viable mechanical heart pump, to replace the real thing, is multiple times more difficult than getting a man to the lunar surface.Considering the technical subject matter, Ticker is a visceral read. The first half, profiles the famous researchers DeBakey and Cooley. They were super-sized intellects with egos to match. The earliest artificial hearts are described as large and somewhat cumbersome and the implantation of them in animals and people bordered on the inhumane. These chapters are intriguing and real page turners.A presence throughout Ticker is noted heart surgeon, Dr. O.H. “Bud” Frazier. His first-person accounts throughout the book are an invaluable oral history of artificial heart research from its very beginnings to the present day. Frazier comes off as a well-grounded person. He’s a brilliant scientist, a workaholic and a bit of an eccentric. He provided a comforting presence because, frankly, many of the patient’s stories in Ticker are quite grim.The second half of the book takes place much closer to the present day and we learn that artificial heart R & D has stalled somewhat, due in part to more restrictive government regulations on testing in human beings. The story shifts to an uncelebrated engineer, who lives half way around the globe. He comes up with an ingenious idea for a pumping system and subsequently relocates to Houston. He and his colleagues lobby a local, celebrity entrepreneur and his wife, to donate a large amount money for continuing research. These later chapters are well written and researched but unfortunately the subjects and the subject matter is just not as engrossing as what proceeded them.Ticker is solid history for lay readers with equals parts of humanity and science.

This is a really hack job, and more of a biography of Bud , who appears to be her close friend. The "Swartz factoids" mentioned, along with a raft of others in her book may seem at odds with history and memory to me.She has many, many facts wrong, and in many cases has lied about some of her sources. Too bad. Could have been a good book.

I guess this is simply one doctor’s journey towards creating an artificial heart, but it seemed like a promise of more. I read an excerpt from a magazine that pulled me into one man’s story. It was written like a novel, and I thought the patient was going to get some miraculous happy ending. Instead, he was one of many patients that tried an artificial heart-like device and passed away. I guess that’s life/science, but they open the book with that story and almost never mention that patient again, and barely provide any more to the story other than this Dr tried to save him at one point. I almost feel like I have to spoil the “ending” because essentially there is none. Basically their best hope is still in development and testing. If it ends up being the miracle invention they want, they’ll have to add to this book and properly finish it. This was an interesting read, but I didn’t like how the book was constructed.

The author is from Huston and the book tends to make more of the Texas importance in heart replacement. Still a nice review of the work of surgeons in their attempts to find a solution to the failing heart. Fair report on the Debakey/Cooley todo.

Reads like an adventure novel. Ms. Swartz knows her stuff and all the players. A sober look at mans attempt to enter the “bionic” age.

i wasn't sure at first if i was going to like the first book in the series. But i am so glad i kept Reading. I have finished the whole series and I am sad it's over. It had everything. Romance, mystery and lots of family dynamics. I don't know if there will be anymore books in this series, but I'm off to check out what else this author has to offer. i really enjoyed this series and found it hard to put down.. I fell in love with Hannah and Logan and the children.. Would highly reccomend this series.

I loved all of the Hana books! Read them all!! Dont really know why I found this such a I was so entranced , it that is exactly the best description!!!!! Delightful.... Hana is such a strong character, but her husband has such an exceptional love for her, she can almost get away with anything....

I started with the first book and got hooked. The story was so interesting and relate-able. The emotions were complex yet simply presented so that I felt such compassion for the characters. The cultural part was also very intriguing and has made me want to travel to meet these people! I savored the entire series and was very sad when it was completed, so I went to K T Bowes author page and ordered every last one of her books! I really like her style.I'm hoping there will be more Hana DuRose books, because I've fallen in love with Logan!!!!!!!!

This episode is the most violent, the most gut-wrenching, and the most gratifying. I cried...a lot. I highly recommend the whole series.

Another great book from this author. I look forward to reading the last book in the series when it comes out.

This is the third time I've read the whole series. They are awesome. I will read them all again sometime, I keep them on hand

I read all books in this series. This saga kept my interest and I usually read each book through before putting it down. Each book held a different timeline of events for the Du Rose family and the woman named Hana that married into it. Enjoyed it!!
