Review

At last -- Catholic manga that's as good as the popular stuff. It even reads right to left! I overheard my daughter's friend say, 'I always think of popes as always being popes. I never think of them growing up.' This manga will give kids such good thoughts. --Mike Aquilina Executive Vice-President, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, Author of many books, EWTN host & Catholic dad

A fun graphic novel. Shows us how humble Francis was even before he was a priest and his struggles in life like having his longue removed. Pope Francis through this novel helps us trust in God like Francis humbly did and is doing throughout his life.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and passed it along to a couple of teenagers. Great work, illustrations are a great aid to understanding the impact that this priest made in so many people. Great job!

A great book to bring Mercy into a better understand and Living for our everyday lives

Wonderful story!

I did not even open this book (but peeked a little without tearing the plastic wrap). Definitely not our type of format. We like chapter books, with some illustrations and a formal written style. This is a very "cartoonish" type of book, filled with illustrations and word bubbles. Personally we can't stand this type of reading. Also, I had bought another book in their series (this one I did open) and it was written in a weird Chinese format in which the book reads from back to front. Our kids are avid readers and love to learn about the Popes, but wanted NOTHING to do with this book. Definitely returning it and asking for a refund.

I need to state that a physical copy of this sat on my bedside table for a few years. The problem is not the book, it is me, with my dual form of dyslexia I really prefer reading eBooks, even for graphic novels. I had picked this book up a few times, but never got very far, and by the time I came back to it I started over again. But I recently read the eBook edition of Habemus Papam! Pope Benedict XVI, written by Doman and illustrated by Lam. And though the style is not my favorite, it is so well done I have give both books a 5 out of 5 star ratings. This was an excellent read! The style of the art in the two volumes is a little different. And because of the lives being portrayed the stories are very different. But both stories are told with jumping back in time and then up to the present. This one is written with underlays of excerpts from Pope Francis's writings. The book gives us great insight into the man and his journey, that ultimately lead to his becoming pope. I have read a number of books about and by Pope Francis since his election, but even with all of that reading there were a few surprises in this volume. Before I even finished this book, my children showed great interest in it. I have now read it with my youngest daughter and am currently reading it for a third time with my son. The story and artwork hold up over multiple readings even back to back. My children love the graphic novel format. My only wish is that it would come out in an eBook, that way they can each have it on their device without having to buy a second copy, currently they are debating who should keep it on their bookshelf and why.The illustrations in this volume are wonderful. I especially loved the illustrations of mass or times in prayer. There is so much to appreciate about the artwork, and the written story. This book provides excellent insight into the man, the priest, and now our Pope. This book is a great read for anyone who would like a glimpse into the life of Pope Francis before he ascended to the throne of Peter. It is an excellent read for teens, and even to read to younger children. It was instantly a family favorite. And we give it the McEvoy family seal of approval. I would love to see what Doman and Lam would do telling the story of other Pope's or saints, because this is an excellent read.

Known for their work on the Manga Hero edition of "Habemus Papem" which told of Pope Benedict XVI, the creative team of Regina Doman as writer and Sean Lam as artist has once again joined to tell a pope's life story. This time the attention is on Pope Francis. Intended for teens and young adults, Pope Francis: I Believe in Mercy hits all the crucial points of Pope Francis' life to date.It begins with Jorge Bergoglio as a twelve-year-old who thought he was in love with a young lady. When her father told him to leave her alone, he jokingly told her he would become a priest instead. But his true call wouldn't come until years later. The manga tells of Bergoglio's lung disease which resulted in the removal of part of his lung and a difficult recovery. It also shows his joining the Jesuits and his efforts to help priests during the political turmoil of Argentina. Pope Francis follows the future pope as he ministered to the people of Buenos Aires, reaching out to the poor and marginalized. In 1992, he became a bishop and as the Archbishop instructed him, the Diocese of Buenos Aires became his bride. When the Archbishop died in 1998, Bishop Bergoglio took over the role but eschewed all of the trappings that came with the office. The manga emphasizes his desire to live simply and minister to all. It concludes with his election to the papacy and the continuation of his simple way of life. The story of Pope Francis is interwoven with scenes of Jesus from Scripture. There are also passages from Pope Francis' writings and homilies.Because of the subject matter included, especially in the dark days of Argentina, "Pope Francis: I Believe in Mercy" is definitely intended for teens and young adults rather than children. It may be helpful to have a previous acquaintance with the life story of Pope Francis as well - it is possible one might become confused in some parts without it (either that or one might read this, then go on to read more about him to learn more). Overall, however, "Pope Francis: I Believe in Mercy" is extremely well done and is a way to inspire young people to follow Jesus as Pope Francis has striven to do in his own life.

Very nice comic book. It covers a lot of what people have seen and lived of the developing story of Pope Francis papacy and more. Even if your kids have no background of these stories, they will learn them. Very nice indeed. I highly recommend it.
