Ordered this book for rules on playing Dominoes games. Hoyle's devotes three pages to Dominoes and fails to cover the most popular Dominoes games, Mexican Train and Chicken. This publication was 2001. One may find more comprehensive information on a particular game by searching the internet. i did. For other games I would suggest first looking at a Hoyle's Rules of Games book at library. If satisfied for what it covers on your game, go buy it. At least you could make an informed decision.
Love the book and will be playing the "old" games I used to play with my grandmother. Easy to understand and brings back the fun of playing with real cards and not a computer.
We have an older version and I often refer to it to remind me of rules of games. Sometimes I have found that an older game such as one I played with the grandmother (Spite and Malice) now has a new name and is in box form which I have played with a granddaughter. Such a good game under either name (can't remember the current one, sorry)! When I played with my grandmother, all we needed was a couple decks of cards. Now it comes in a game box and, of course, there is a price tag on it. Still, it is reasonable and I highly recommend it for all ages. Our granddaughter was nine or ten when I introduced it to her and she picked up on it immediately. Note, she is a games enthusiastic.
Good reference tool, worth the price.
I bought this book for my Mom as a Christmas Gift, my Mom is recently retired and living in a retirement community where she has gotten very involved in playing cards. She plays many different games on different days so I thought this would be a fun gift. She was actually quite excited because it had all of the rules for all the games she played plus many more games she was contemplating joining but was unsure of the rules. Before buying I compared the table of contents of this book and found that it had rules for way more games than the others on the market.
It's very good but needs an index
I bought this for my daughter (9), an avid reader. It's been a fun go-to book when looking for games. It's easy to use, but it has taken some adult oversight to make sure the games are played correctly (especially hearts).
I bought this to brush up on children's card games for our grandchildren's visit. It was very helpful in that respect. However, the terminology they used was confusing at times. For example, the word "Draw" was used to mean to take a card, but was also used when they meant for you to ' illustrate' your own playing cards in 1000 Blank White Cards Game. Overall, it is a handy book to have around - especially for resolving disputes about the rules of games! I don't play poker, so I cannot address that section, but it was lengthy.
