So far, in the last year and a half, I have read 15 of the Arden Shakespeare Collection and 'A Midsummer's Night's Dream' has the worst introduction of them all. The writer spends so much time with the history of the play's productions that the work itself suffers. In an introduction the work is the key, not its history. Analysis of plot, character development, metaphysics, key phrases, the characters' relationships to one another and to the text, motives, etc, are crucial, for me, before I read the play. I have nor seen that many of Shakespeare's plays, but I find reading them rewarding and exciting. But first, before I get started reading the text, I need a warm-up that smoothes me into the play. The writer of this intro, Chaudhuri, holds the key components of Dream at a distance, while going on and on about where it was produced, who produced it, the actors who played certain characters, its translation into movies, TV, opera, while staying completely away from the text. I want to know about the characters in the play and their interrelationships with one another, an analysis of crucial scenes and how they move the plot forward, how key phrases reveal the inner depths of the characters' motives; in short, a body of knowledge that helps me along as I read the play. Its production history should be in the last few pages of the introduction, not take up more than half of it. I have gone ahead with the reading of Dream without the aid of a good intro and it is moving along nicely but an in-depth intro would have been so helpful.

I love this series of Shakespeare books, but this one in particular hits a soft spot with me. I bought my first copy almost 20 years ago and brought it with our family to an outdoor, picnic performance of the play. My five-year-old daughter, was hooked after the first faery leapt over our picnic blanket and ran to join the others on the stage. We followed along the story with this beautifully illustrated book and a solar glow bulb, this becoming one of the faeries. Fast forward to the present and my beautiful daughter is now producing Shakespeare Summer Festivals at her college. She came home looking for this book. I gladly handed it down (including the little dried flower we placed in it that night) and I immediately ordered another one for me. These series of books are perfect for introducing young readers to the works of the Bard, because they are not huge and intimidating but smaller, hard bound and beautifully illustrated. Our set is now a family heirloom.

When looking at classics this is one of the first one many people read. And for good reason. Shakespeare wrote a great tale of a love triangle, a fun-loving fae, and fae-king in love, and one night of errors ending well. Although I'm of the opinion that what happens off-page is a little dirtier than what happens on page :-PI know a lot of people who started with Romeo and Juliet and got turned off... I wish they'd give it another shot. This play is fantastic.

Even though I have read almost everything William Shakespeare wrote I have begun to read different approaches to the Bardâ€™s work. Much of Shakespeareâ€™s plays deal with tragedy but I just completed reading (Manga Shakespeare: A midsummer nightâ€™s dream illustrated by Kate Brown) one of his most amusing and funny plays.This was a fun read and is full of mystical fairies that just for the fun of it create strange love triangles among a group of teenagers. The mischievous fairies make a powerful love potion which creates chaos among the love interests of Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius. The fully illustrated 207 page soft cover book makes the story come alive. This is one of my favorite Shakespeareâ€™s plays.I never like to give away too much information when reviewing any novel. Even if you have never read or seen any of Shakespeareâ€™s plays this graphic novel is a good place to start enjoying the ancient master of poetry and prose, William Shakespeare.Rating: 5 Stars. Bough this Calla edition of "A Midsummer Night's Dream"... twice -- first time, upon opening the book the binding that holds the pages became unglued from the spine -- completely -- returned and tried another and the same thing -- quite disappointed as you can imagine...but I figure that after two exact same defects, must be a production/batch issue.5 stars for paper material, illustrations, as Calla editions deliver in this department -- the problem would be with the binding/construction which gets a 1 star -- maybe they didn't actually try to open their books to see how the spines perform?I've checked other Calla editions and this issue seems limited to this title & also "A House of Pomegranates" -- beware of this potential issue if ordering these two books.

These maps are awesome. Very easy to read. They separate sections by different entire maps, which allows you to get really good resolution on the areas you are specifically going to. I have already benefitted from them in that they have very distinct markers for the 35er summits.I normally like Nat Geo maps for simplicity in ADK, but things are generally way more vague in the catskills, so I prefer this. I also was able to use the map for directions on the road when my GPS went out, not perfect for that, but helpful as again, things can be vague out there.I waited a long time to buy this map and I regret not getting it earlier. I have already put it to use twice in areas where it helped me select routes which worked best for me.

Firstly: SWEETJEEZUSTHANKGOD THEY SENT THE LATEST EDITION (2018, 12th edition) than the advertised older edition (2016, 11th edition). I didn't realize this till it was too late; I was mentally prepared to return & buy elsewhere. Thank yooouuu...Anyway! Secondly, the map series are way better than any app you can pull up. Details such as mileage, lean-to's, & fishing spots are noted. A dear friend utilized a map for our backpacking plans and, boy, was it handy. Had to get my hands on one for myself. Thanks so much and keep doing what you guys (NY-NJ Trail Conference) do.

Took my nephew Hunter for a hike up Hunter Mountain for his birthday. This set of maps, like the other 3 sets I own, proved invaluable in confidently traversing unknown territories. Extremely well made and accurate. I don't feel comfortable hiking without them and wish they would expand their covered areas. Perhaps PA next?

Along with the true north lines in black, it also has the magnetic north declination lines in faint red, so you really don't need to set your compass, as long as you understand how to use a compass. In fact, the use of the declination lines would be more precise that setting your compass when traveling long distances and off trail.

The truth is, most things that are images you can find online and print for less than you'd pay for it elsewhere. I've definitely found more detailed maps of that area online and for free. However, I still have to give these maps five stars for the following: they are more up to date than the online images, they are on quality waterproof material and they are a great complete guide to the entire area; which saves you a ton of time on google. I would recommend these for hikers, fishermen and hunters.....especially as a great cheap complement to other navigation tools such as a GPS.

The best $14.00 I've ever spent. If you're going to hike the Catskills, just get them! (But get the new 2015 edition.) After my first 3500 hike, I was told, "Get these maps." I didn't ,'cause I was letting others lead. One icy, Winter morning on Peekamoose Road, I couldn't find the right meetup parking area! My rider from Brooklyn, pulled out her map, and Bingo! Ordered mine the next day. I've finished the 3500s and have almost completed hiking all 351 miles of trails in the Catskills, most of them solo. Thank you NY/NJ Trail Conference.

I just received these maps and there is good and bad.I mainly purchased this for the Northeastern Trail map, the rest were just a bonus. The other maps are also much smaller than maps you may be used to, they are:12" x 18", Western Catskills # 14414" x 22"(2), Central Catskills #142 & Southern Catskills #14322" x 20" Northeastern Catskills #1418" x 8" Bearpen/ Vly Trails #1458" x 10" Vernooy Kill #146 The smaller ones only have a few trails (which I assume,is not a fault in the maps, there just isn't too many public trails there)On the positive note, the Northeastern map #141 seems to be very good. It has many trails, their labeled trail marked colors, and contours. Which is worth the $16.95 in my book (and the money goes to an organization which helps maintain the trails -bonus).Another thing that is not a huge deal is that these are made of Tyvek, which I am apparently not used to. They are very loud (like you are shaking a cookie sheet in an attempt to make a "thunder" sound). I am used to the National Geographic Maps that are durable and are not loud. They are just more pleasing.**Overall - Good maps for the area - Buy them***

In this social chronicle of the American South's past 40 years, Wilkie (coauthor, Arkansas Mischief), a native Mississippian who exiled himself, proves that, indeed, you can't take the South out of the boy. Drawing on his own memories and dozens of books and magazine articles, Wilkie retells the big stories he covered as a journalist, most notably for the Boston Globe: Ole Miss's forced acceptance of its first black student in 1962; "Freedom Summer" of 1964, "the most terrible year of violence since the Civil War"; Nixon's Southern Strategy to wrestle the Southern vote from the Democrats; the election of Jimmy Carter; the conviction of Medgar Evers's murderer in 1994, 31 years after the crime. But at the core of this book is Wilkie's own development in the face of enormous changes. Raised as someone "who observed segregationist customs, but disapproved of blatant bigotry," Wilkie becomes appalled by the South's racism. In 1969, he flees Mississippi for the cultivated Northeast he'd read about in Cheever and Updike novels, planning never to return. Of course, he discovers New England has its own problems, like the controversial student busing program in 1975 Boston. After 25 years, Wilkie moves southward again and finds it, like himself, changed yet unchanged. "My generation experienced more disruption in our social order than any other.... Though Curtis Wilkie is 25 years older than me, I found many of his thoughts about Mississippi and the South to mirror my own. He loves his home yet he hated the racism, violence, and backwardness and fled for 25 years. But, eventually he came home. This is a very touching memoir of a reporter who grew up in the trying times of the 1950s and 60s, and worked as a chronicler of the South and American politics for over 4 decades. Sixteen years after the publishing this book, Wilkie is still writing. I highly recommend this book.

I am a native New Yorker who lives in Oxford, MS. The South is such a complicated place easy to condemn for it's reactionary intransigence. Unfortunately, the typical Northern appraisal of the South is an unfair over simplification. Wilkie writes lovingly and insightfully of the South he deservedly loves and criticizes. Wilkie joins a long line of great Mississippi authors who continue to be both repelled by and magnetically held by their state. It is impossible to understand America without understanding the South and this book is an eloquent effort in a continuing dialogue.

My husband is the same age as Curtis Wilkie and I am only a few years younger. We grew up just south of the author in southern Louisiana and southern Mississippi from the 40's to the 60's. We both thought the book extremely well written and insightful. We have given it as a gift and recommended it to others as a must-read.Mississippi is slowly joining the 21st century and has much to offer now that the white paternalism and good old boy networks are shrinking and there are the beginnings of a black middle class. We can all hope that the south will rise again - with equality for all.

As someone who recently relocated to the Deep South I thoroughly enjoyed Curtis Wilkies tales, including civil rights struggles and the political strategies used to get the Southern vote. Both historically educational and entertaining, I highly recommend this book.

I could not put this book down. This combination autobiography/social and political history seamlessly weaves personal anecdotes, biographical narratives, and historical commentary. Wilkie's strengths lie both in his compelling journalistic prose and his intimate knowledge of many of the events he discusses. His firsthand accounts of already famous (and some not-so-famous) events add rich color to our collective knowledge of the region and era.

Mr. Wilkie knows his history and has created a thorough and interesting read. He includes many facts and perspectives on Southern history.

Fabulous book

Curtis Wilkie is a Mississippian who paints a broad picture of the Civil Rights movement from the inside out. He cataloges his growth from childhood to young adult as a jounalist in waiting, one with a sympathetic ear for the plight of the descendants of slaves in central Miss. His descriptions of his upbringing in a town divided by race are quite good. And his stories of Ole miss football games and the atmosphere surrounding them are excellent as they foreshadow the struggle of the civil rights community in what Stevie Wonder referred to as "hard times Mississippi." It's a well told story.As a young adult he escapes to Manhattan and literally and figuratively joins the literatti at Elaine's, that popular Manhattan nightspot frequented by those the likes of Willie Morris. His soft hearted leanings help him fit right in as a typical evenings dicourse is often filled with lamentations with regard to those unenlightened ones, those knuckle dragging country folk left behind. The book is an ongoing narrative of Wilkies life from his work within the movement in his home town, his migration to NYC, his marriage there, and his subsequent return to Mississippi as an older man.It was a time of great change in the South and Wilkie captures it as well as anyone I've read. Let's just say that it's certainly different there today. A good companion read would be "Rising Tide" by John Barry. It's about the great Mississippi river flood of 1927, a disastor that not only changed the landscape of the south, but also that of America. It's a great lead-up to Wilkie's story which bridges the link between the old south and its new beginnings. One cannot read these books without feeling the tribulations of the misbegotten and dispossesed; it's a tonic for softening the hardest of hearts.

You can enjoy it on its own but if you have read the first two books, you will have the back story on Paisley's best friends Nicole and Lauren. The characters are extremely well portrayed. There is a lot more to the plot than just the royal falls for a waitress trope. I thoroughly enjoyed this book (and am now way behind on my chores since I refused to stop reading).

Paisley Goldbergâ€™s two best friends married famous men, and Paisley vows never to enter such a fishbowl. The man she likes most in her life is actually a kind but mysterious man she met on a movie review site online. Alex finally reluctantly agrees to meet her in person for a movie premier, and he turns out to be the prince of a small country, but heâ€™s also everything sheâ€™s always wanted, except for being famous.Prince Alessandro is drawn to Paisley, but he dreads her finding out who he really is. She told him she never wants to date a celebrity, and he doesnâ€™t want to lose her friendship. When he does meet her, she agrees to see him as just a friend, and sheâ€™s his ideal woman. However, his position as prince keeps trying to pull them apart, and he fears for the future.Even though this story is reminiscent of several movies Iâ€™ve seen, I still enjoyed it. Both Alex and Paisley are lovable, and the story had enough fresh problems to keep me reading. I found few mistakes in the book, and it was a fast, sweet read. I gave it 4.5 stars, which rounded up to a five.

Paisley serving people all day, and review movies at night, posting them regularly now. Alex and Paisley have been chatting daily for six months, he almost asked her for a date. She was witty, good conversation, but against anyone with fame. He had to be satisfied with chatting, though he wondered what she looked liked. With a gesture from his father to change a rule, would that change things for him and maybe love. A cute story with a different ending of what one thought. Nice and enjoyable to read.

Don't look for intrigue and suspense. Just get to know these new friends and enjoy the read. You'll be glad you did.

He and Paisley meet online on MovieGeeks and instantly become friends. But when Paisley mentions she would never marry a famous guy, Alex is reluctant to meet her face to face...But when this meeting happens, they both discover that there might be so much more to their relationship than just friends. But will Paisley be strong enough to go against her number one dating rule? Will Alex be able to overcome his family's opposition to marrying someone below his station? You'll have to read it to find out...It was a delightful and heartwarming read! The characters felt real, relatable and endearing to me. I fell in love with them! And I love how their relationship develops, their banter, the sweet moments. The drama was engaging too. I was hoping to see how this story would unfold and resolve in the end!I totally recommend it! I got bogged down in the sections of the book where I was supposed to feel bad for people got expensive, advanced degrees and then couldn't find a good job that paid them for their education. Not sure I found this too surprising--our local economy is begging for good workers to do blue-collar work in welding, tool & dye, plumbing, etc but we have few jobs for people with advanced degrees in English lit or whatever. A lot of the problems encountered by these families is very predictable, in my opinion. Babies are expensive, you should wait until you are established in your career before having them. Daycare is expensive, everyone knows this and should plan their budget before having a baby. None of the personal stories discussed the financial decisions of the subject in detail--as an example of this, I was once treated to a sad rant by a neighbor who was bewailing the fact that his wife was going to have to return to school and get a job because of their financial woes as he stood in front of their three cars, large boat, highly decorated house with a pool, with three kids who all went to private school (there is no benefit in my area to attending private schools as the public schools are outstanding) and his two expensive purebred dogs sniffed at my feet. This book raises some interesting ideas & topics, but there are slim and unformed solutions such as "Don't feel bad about your situation" or "hire your cleaning lady from a coop". I'm not sure I can muster too much sympathy for the person who used their 401K to pay for a wedding or is sad because they can't have a yard service or eat out frequently or had a crappy job after they earned a Ph.D. in Russian literature. On the other hand, I truly feel for the folks who are devalued by society due to their job--caring for children and the elderly, teaching, social work, etc. or whose situations deteriorated after layoffs, downsizing or medical problems. I guess I would be interested in more specific details about the choices made by many of the people in the book before I can feel sad for them.

I'm surprised at the anger and resentment in some of these reviews. I don't usually write reviews, but this particular book struck a chord with me and I feel obliged to share my view in contrast to some of the anger claiming Ms. Quart's book is a whiny over-privileged Millennial manifesto.I identified with this book and the people spotlighted because I feel a camaraderie with them. I, too, came from an upper middle class household, where I was blessed with having a family wealthy enough to send me to private university. I am a Millennial, and I was raised to believe I could do anything and be anyone, and that's not a bad thing. I earned a master's degree in the sciences and took out a modest student loan not to cover tuition, but to help with living expenses in the city where I attended school. I have been fortunate enough to be well employed in my field for the past decade. I own a home, I send my children to a good daycare, I drive a new car, and have excellent credit. I am, by any measure, successful.But I am struggling. I'm struggling to pay my mortgage, my car payments, my student loan payments each month. I have nearly nothing in my bank account after my bills are paid. I freelance my skills on the side to earn extra pennies simply to stay afloat, and count down the months until my eldest will enter kindergarten and the financial burden of daycare will ease.Yes, there are people much worse off than me and I sympathize with them. Yes, there are those who went into Tech or Finance and are doing astronomically better than me. But that's the whole point: the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer. All the folks in the middle are becoming invisible. To be middle class in the US is becoming a complicated, increasingly difficult feat to accomplish. And I feel like Ms. Quart's book is primarily about people like me: the ones with all the ammunition in their pocket to "make it" in the middle class. But we are struggling in a way that our parent's generation never did. We are, for better or for worse, breaking new ground.In the middle of the last century, jobs were secure, wages were increasing...pensions were real! People weren't paying hundreds of dollars each month to student loans, thousands of dollars each year to daycare, and their employers weren't paying hand over foot for health insurance. All of these things that we consider so necessary in the middle class- insurance, loans, childcare, mortgages- these are all run by profit-earning companies. Our capitalist economy has gotten away from us.I get so angry when I see economic growth measured simply by the number of jobs. What about people who are underemployed? What about people who are working in their field and haven't seen a salary increase in years? What about the people who are responsible for paying for their own health insurance, their own retirement? They are employed and contributing to our economy, but are they comfortable? Can they pay their bills? Likely not. Our nation does not take care of its workers like it used to. It is a systemic, complex problem that will likely take another generation to fix. I don't know what the future looks like. But for now, it's my generation that is hurting and it is comforting to read a book like this simply to know that we are not alone in this struggle. It gives me hope. Thank you, Ms. Quart, for writing such an important book, for telling these people's stories, and for doing it in such an eloquent way.

This book had some interesting points and information. And I agree with some of the author's observations. However the anecdotes recounted by the author reflect bad decision making or poor judgment/planning on the part of the interview subject. For example the woman with a relatively good job who had a child with a part time composer who made very little money and then seemed surprised when they ran into financial anxiety. What exactly did she expect? And why should society be expected to subsidize this family? Having a child was their choice, holding a low paying job, albeit one the job holder may be passionate about, certainly doesn't motivate me to support these people.There are enough facts around inequality and income disparity as well as the rising cost of living to make this a compelling read without resorting to stories that call into question the decision making of those involved. In the end it does a disservice to the problem.

If I were just to write "Stinkin' adorable" I think it would sum up this review. But, since the point of a review is to inform the next buyer, here are my points: It's well made. The materials used to make this a "board" book are superb, much better than many of the other board books we own. It's visually appealing and imaginative on every page. If you feel stumped about how to teach your child the world of independent dressing, this little gem would be helpful. Anyhow, definitely no regrets buying this one!

I never write reviews, but my 3 year old has been having daily temper tantrums about getting dressed for months. This book came in the mail last night, and we read it while getting dressed this morning. 5 minutes later, no tears, he was dressed and happily eating breakfast compared to the usual 20 minute saga that left us both exhausted and sad.

This is a cute book, perfect for little ones. Both our 17 month old, and our four year old love this, as well as the other books by Caroline Jayne Church we have purchased. The writing is simple enough for beginning readers and the illustrations are cute and fun. We plan on purchasing more by this author.

About the Author

Mr. Quek received his B. Eng. (Hon.) in mechanical engineering from the National University of Singapore in 1999. He did an industrial attachment in the then aeronautics laboratory of DSO National Laboratories, Singapore, gaining much experience in using the finite element method in areas of structural dynamics. He also did research in the areas of wave propagation and infinite domains using the finite element method. In the course of his research, Mr Quek had gained tremendous experience in the applications of the finite element method, especially in using commercially available software like Abaqus. Currently, he is doing research in the field of numerical simulation of quantum dot nanostructures, which will lead to a dissertation for his doctorate degree. To date, he had authored two international journal papers. His research interests include Computational Mechanics, Nano-scale Computation, Vibration and Wave Propagation in Structures and Numerical Analysis.Dr. Liu received his PhD from Tohoku University, Japan in 1991. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University, U.S.A. He is currently the Director of the Centre for Advanced Computations in Engineering Science (ACES), National University of Singapore. He is also an Associate Professor atthe Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore. He authored more than 200 technical publications including two books and 130 international journal papers. He is the recipient of the Outstanding University ResearchersAwards (1998), for his development of the Strip Element Method. He is also a recipient of the Defence Technology Prize (National award, 1999) for his contribution to development of underwater shock technology at Singapore. He won the Silver Award at CrayQuest 2000 (Nation wide competition in 2000) (Nationwide competition in 2000) for his development of meshless methods.
