About the Author

Natalia Strelkova has been bilingual in English and Russian since childhood. She received a degree from City University of New York (CUNY), traveled to Russia during the Krushchev "thaw" and stayed for 35 years, working as a translator and editor. She taught translation technique for 24 years at the Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow. She has previously taught Russian at Georgetown University and translation at American University. She resides in the Washington, D.C. area.

I've read every book on Russian>English translation I've been able to get my hands on. Yes, I've been working to refashion myself as a professional translator since losing my job in academia. (Sadly, there is no work for those of us trained to teach Russian in today's America, making my doctorate essentially not worth much. Hence, the turn to translation work.) However, not to state the obvious, but despite multiple years in Moscow and said doctorate, I have found it to be much harder to "reproduce" into English Russian texts than to simply understand them. Of course, this is common knowledge to those who practice translation work, but the fact remains that it is very hard, particularly at the beginning, to move from the overly literal translation. Strelkova is a master instructor of the art, and her book is absolutely essential reading for those who wish to improve their abilities. She identifies several problematic aspects of Russian, such as what she calls "props"--certain verbs ''and nouns derived from verbs and many other problematic areas that can constrain the translator. Her suggestions for dealing with these issues are truly helpful and can only come from someone with years and years of translation practice under her belt. I am so very grateful for this book, which, on top of everything else, is easy on the pocketbook! She says in the afterword that she is creating an online course, and I hope this is true! I'll be one of the first to sign up for it!

I am a linguist by education and speak two languages with native fluency and Russian with reasonable fluency.I love this book for its modern sociolinguistic approach which emphasizes translation from Russian within the social and cultural context in which it is spoken.Translation is both an art and a science. In order to translate well, social and cultural differences have to be taken into account. Translation is not merely taking a group of words and rendering them into the target language, English in this case, but translating them into an appropriate cultural context that most closely renders the context in which the words were spoken in Russian.The author has a unique perspective and a unique background which gives her excellent qualifications and makes this book really interesting. If you are interested as an English speaker in translation from Russian to English or simply are an advanced student of Russian wanting to achieve a more advanced understanding of the language, I highly recommend this fascinating book.

I had hoped that this book would help me - a novice student, with Russian translation. But, much of this book is WAY over my head. Still, I am the consummate student; so, I am getting some benefit from this excellent work. And, the more I learn, the more help it will be; so, it is not a waste of money, IMHO.

This book is full of really useful tips and tricks that one can readily apply in situations where a good translation doesn't come immediately to mind. As mentioned in another comment though, the lack of an index is a drawback. The whole book could also have benefited from a good editor (there are some clunky, even incomplete, sentences presented as finished translations, vague examples, and formatting issues).

I think think this book is a great start for those looking into becoming translators. The author does a great job at explaining common mistakes and how to fix them. I highly recommend it!

The title "an introduction to" can be misleading: this book contains a variety of useful tips, even for the more experienced translator working from Russian into English. A must have, and possibly the best book of its kind for the native English translator working from Russian.

Get beyond the trap of literal translation. Strelkova's advice is excellent. It is seriously flawed, however, by the lack of an index.

A fascinating crime novel that does a good job at blending fact with fiction. The story takes a while to set up, but once it gets going it keeps your attention, spotlighting a unique perspective on how the seedy criminal underworld in the states spills over the mainland, and finds a roost in the Hawaii.

Great Story, Reccomend read

This is an storyline that has yet to see justice for a four year old Hawaiian Princess, and a colorado young girl as well as ongoing corrupted Hawaii, every lawyer, judge, mayor councils governor, corporates and nonprofit corporates of the american militaropolitical Regime that stole hawaii, hook line and sinker.

Anyone who has been victimized by the corrupt hiding in Hawaii should read this book. These true stories are told by those who still have a voice; The families who lost loved ones, their inheritance, their property. My sister and I have spent the last five years gathering information on the death of Jack Lee Stahley, our father. During our journey we have met many other families with similar stories to tell. Luckily we also met JD Benish, who has given our stories this voice. Now we pray for justice... The Fifth Seal.....

This book has great writing. It is very readable, personable, believable and a page turner. This book has such honest writing is it like you are a witness to all the pain, anquish, ephiphanies, and wisdom of the author in a surreal first-hand experience. The book is well researched and presented with detailed testimony. The fact that the author is a retired cop helps to bring technical insight on how the law, courts, and cases come together.

Anyone that is interested in the corruption in Hawaii and what the mainstream media, politicians and authorities are hiding, this book is a must read. Jim Benish is an amazing detective and reveals a truth you won't hear anywhere else.

Conspiratorial and racist at best. Benish refers to Japanese-Americans as "the same Japanese who bombed Pearl Harbor," and posits that they "infest Hawaii." He also believes that Philippians are people from the Philippines. A struggle to read.

The carb counts in this book are WRONG. Some are seriously wrong. My 12 year old daughter is newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I got this book for her and she was grateful to have something with carbs listed, so she could plan her insulin shots and meals. She picked a recipe with black beans and rice, which had carbs listed at 6 g per 1 cup serving. She was so excited she could have two cups for 12 g. I stopped and looked at the meal, which was comprised entirely of rice with some black beans and spices and thought the count seemed wrong. Cooked rice AND black beans have carb counts of 43 g per cup. She started crying when I told her the book was wrong. She had one cup, gave herself appropriate insulin for 43 g and her later blood sugar checks made us glad we didn't believe THIS COMPLETELY INACCURATE CARB COUNT. I looked up another recipe; roast chick peas; also wrong. Chick peas are 80 g of carb per can; multiply by 2, divide by 8 servings, you get 20 g of carb per serving, not the 11 g the book states. It sells recipes to report low carb counts. This book could really hurt someone. I don't understand the ADA name on it. I don't actually understand how the book got this far at all.

Read the one and two star reviews before buying, they are right about this book. Almost all of these recipes have sugar in the nutritional values - some of them have 12g to 17g of sugar (some recipes include brown sugar)!If these meals were packaged and on the shelves at my grocery store, I'd read the nutritional value (like most diabetics do) and immediately put it right back on the shelf - why would I want the recipe?!?!I'm so disappointed!

Because my blood sugar has been steadily climbing the past couple of years, I decided to address the problem before I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. This book was a huge disappointment. The recipes are, as advertised, "comfort food," but there's nothing new here other than rerducing carbs, fats and sodium. I looked through it once and haven't been back. It doesn't take a lot of studyiing to cut back on the ingredients that are reduced in this book (unless you're a candidate for Worst Cooks TV show). Thanks to a different cookbook, "Diabetic Living's Diabetic Meals by the Plate," my blood sugar is once again under control, I'm losing weight slowly and steadily and truly enjoying exciting new ways to prepare veggies and proteins.

Diabetics looking for low carb alternatives need to look elsewhere. All of the recipes are extremely carb heavy (many 20-30g per serving). The author starts focusing on low fat and low calorie which really isn't as significant of a factor for diabetics.None of the recipes are actually significantly different that what you could find in any cookbook since they don't even bother to be low-carbohydrate alternatives.There are no recipes in this book that I will use.

Don't know how they can call themselves a diabetic book. Flour? Sugar? Two things diabetics try to avoid. I wish I had paid more attention to the other reviewers and not bought this book.

I have made several of the recipes - some more once. The recipes I've tried so far are tasty, fairly easy to make and don't leave one feeling like they are settling for a healthy, but less tasty, dish. In short - I don't feel cheated! I am adding these recipes to dishes I make regularly. No one eating any of these recipes were even aware that they were geared to a health specific diet. I really like all the information regarding the carbohydrate, fat and protein content - including sodium and fiber. I don't care about exchanges but I suppose it's important to some. Really like this cook book and will recommend it to anyone looking to change their diet.

This is probably a great book for people who don't associate the word "Comfort" with just plain home cooking. It certainly has some great sounding recipes, but not the type of food I call "comfort food." Probably because I'm from the South, and we look at comfort food as entirely different from what this book calls "Comfort" food. I'm sure other people would find wonderful recipes in this book; I'm definitely NOT saying it is a bad book.....just not what I am looking for.

There are a lot of really good recipes in this book. As a prediabetic I was comforted and amazed at the variety of foods that one is allowed to eat. My only objection is that the recipes are always for six or eight servings, so I have to figure out how to cut the amounts down for one person.

Although it doesn't pack the emotional wallop of Room: A Novel or Slammerkin, "The Sealed Letter" is another fine novel by Emma Donoghue. It's a historical potboiler focusing on a scandalous divorce case in 1860s London. There are four central characters - the wife, her lover, her friend and the cuckolded husband - whose motives will keep you guessing until (and even after) the climactic courtroom scene.Like all of Donoghue's work, "The Sealed Letter" has clever plotting and sharp dialogue. Her usually dynamic pacing is off here, however, and parts of the book drag. The writing could have been tightened up and the story completed in less than its 389 pages. The way Donoghue structures her novels is very interesting. This one is divided into chapters named for legal terms related to the development and adjudication of the divorce case: "Prima Facie," "Feme Covert," "Actus Reus," "Subpoena," "Counterclaim," etc. (All are translated and explained.) In addition to the intriguing characters and drama, Donoghue uses the story to highlight the precarious legal status of women at the time and the emerging movement for women's education and employment. She can always be depended on for a great story with added layers of social and historical perspective. "The Sealed Letter" is not Donoghue's best, but I thought it was pretty good.

This is an excellent book about women's rights in the middle 1800's in England. It's based on true events and it explores two women's relationship with each other, as well as exploring the attitude toward women in this era. The author has done a tremendous amount of research, and the result is a book that is factual as well as entertaining.I have read other books by this author and they have been as good as this one. I highly recommend this book, as well as others by Dr. Donoghue.

There is no doubt that divorce is a blame game at the heart of it. Nor is there any doubt that there is a single person in this country who hasn't had experience with divorce in some way-either personal experience or from their own or their parent's divorcing or friends, family members or neighbors. Hey, we even get to participate vicariously in celebrity divorces these days. Since divorce was first legalized hundreds of years ago it has morphed from a rare and tragic event to just another method of mass entertainment and ultimately a way to feel superior to those who failed at what is culturally viewed as one of the most important inter-personal relationships.It's not all that rare to read about divorce in historical fiction, especially because of the huge amount of fiction focused on the Tudors. But it is rare to get a truly complete description of the historical process, which obviously differs greatly from today's proceedings. And that is exactly what "The Sealed Letter" is. A complete description of the divorce process as it was in 1864. The novel is even arranged in legal terms that describe each one of the processes leading to the proceedings being initiated and the circus that followed them.This book tells the story of an extremely notorious divorce in English history that captured the attention of the country. Containing multiple allegations of adultery, neglect, alienation of affection, sex in public, attempted rape of a drugged, innocent virgin, and even allusions to lesbianism and circumstances that bear remarkable similarity to the impeachment case against President Clinton. I have no doubts that were the case of Harry Codrington versus Helen Codrington happening today that it would generate just as much interests.But it wasn't the actual divorce case that made this novel so interesting-especially to me. It was the characters and the time period. The book is divided up in third person narrative between the three main players in the divorce (in actuality the divorce has three or four parties to it but one of them never appears in the book and one never narrates) Harry, Helen and Emily "Fido" Faithfull. Seven years before our story begins these three lived under the same roof with Fido, as Helen's best friend, often mediating to keep the troubled and obviously miss-matched marriage together. But as Harry was a navy man the Codrington's were posted abroad and Helen and Fido lost touch.Only to re-connect later on a London street, almost as if by magic. The two attribute their lack of communication to a poor postal system and pick up where they left off-with one major difference-Helen has a constant tagalong now, a handsome young man Colonel David Anderson. It soon becomes apparent to Fido that something is going on between them and her supposedly bosom friend is being less than honest about it.But as Helen's true personality and secrets unfold all three are drawn into the strange divorce process the Victorians used. What follows is fascinating not only from a historical perspective about gender politics but as a measuring stick to how well you can ever truly know your friends, your spouse...and how fragile trust, bonds and vows really are.Unlike Emma Donoghue's other historical novels Slammerkin and Life Mask, "The Sealed Letter" only implies sexuality and is in no way descriptive of lesbianism, sex or violence. But this newer demur writing style takes nothing away from the story (though I have to say I found "Life Mask" more interesting because of its larger scope) and this book will be joining the above mentioned and Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins on my bookshelf.Four point five stars.And if you want more about the historical divorce process then Stealing Athena: A Novel is a good place to find some more non-Tudor legal action-though it is far from the main focus of the book.

I'm a big Emma Donoghue fan because I appreciate how she can take an incident from history and bring it to life. I found this entertaining and compelling.

I doubt between three and four stars. The story starts very slowly. And it takes some time to get going. But it gives a good insight in how things were being done in the 19th century. Well, glad to be living now aqnd not then. And I think for women even more so.Anyway, a good read.

Emma Donoghue is an excellent writer. I especially enjoyed this book because it is a great character study and shows what people think they perceive or trust what others say; and because it was set in the late 1800's early 1900's and showed the perspective on women who choose to be on their own.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who has read any of Emma Donoghue's earlier novels that The Sealed Letter is an astonishingly well written and compelling novel. Based on a notorious nineteenth century divorce case, The Sealed Letter explores ideas about friendship and feminism, marriage and motherhood, honor and dishonor with wit, compassion and eloquence. I will call The Sealed Letter a courtroom drama as long as you promise not to imagine for a moment that there is anything of the formulaic in Donoghue's sure hand. A book to read and reread, to savor for its language and its history, its compelling characters and heart-stopping plot. An altogether worthy successor to the extraordinary Slammerkin and the splendid Life Mask.

The timing of the story is the early 1800s. The background clearly shows the thinking of that period. It takes your imagination to place yourself into the mindset of the main characters. When you do this you become caught up in the intriguing situation in which the heroine finds herself. You will be surprised along the way and you won't be able to put the book down until you finish.

I really hope that many teachers and parents read this book. It explains very well the undeniable benefits of standard-based grading. The sbg will help all students of all levels in many ways. As humans, we are very different from each other, which means that we learn differently. The sbg will help with this matter, to benefit mainly our students (and teachers too because it is satisfactory to know our students are learning for real), which will in the end benefit our society as well by producing highly capable professionals. A must read.

Even though it was well written and has many good ideas, but the concept that school is only for academic learning, is perhaps one short coming of modern society. Having a solely academic standards based evaluation system does not prepare young people for life. The traditional more holistic approach better prepares students for success in the real world. Of course when the grades are inflated to the extent that they do not represent their academic ability then of course the educators and administrators need to set up guidelines, but to remove effort, attitude, participation from the grades will not prepare students for the job market.

More theories of how to change something in education. If it is like most theories, then it will be around for a while and then go away. Nothing wrong with the concept, but effective use in practice, especially throughout high school levels with college applications upcoming could be a different story.

I am a high school English teacher, and I’ve been looking to reform my grading practices. I ordered several books at the same time that had been recommended by a colleague. This books is by far the best of the group. It has great background info on how our traditional system of grading came to be and research-based reasons for why it needs to change. It has has great practical ideas for how to implement standards-based grading into the classroom. If you’re looking to switch to standards- based grading, this is the book for you!

After reading this, I've complete changed my approach to grading, a move away from completion/compliance and a move towards what students know and are able to do.

Well, the Lord allowed me to do one better, I had the privilege to meet both Greg and John and hear their heart behind the book and what God has taught them as a result of this journey. I walked away from both meetings praising God that both of these men are committed to helping raise up a generation of biblical stewards to impact the Kingdom of God!!!Now, the book... LOVED IT!!! In all honesty, there is nothing in it that I hadn't read before in terms of content, but rather it was the way it was packaged and presented that provided me several "ah ha" moments. Greg and John don't just give you biblical positions on what God says about money, they share their personal journeys as well as interviews with generous business leaders, and then give practical applications in how to start your own journey. I highly recommend this book. In fact, I've started to give it out as a gift to many of the donors I meet with on a regular basis.

This is a very thought-provoking book, whose fundamental premise can be applied to non-Christians as well as Christians. The ideas are grounded in the Bible and an explicitly Christian framework, but the concept of generosity as a spiritual and moral imperative translates well to many of the non-religious debates America is having today about economic inequality. (I should state here that the book is not political, but in reading it I found myself drawing many parallels to my own life and internal debates I have over the role of wealth in society.)"God and Money" is written in a very approachable and conversational style, and that makes it easy to understand and internalize the concepts. I kept pausing to read passages out loud to my family, and am asking them all to read it so we can have a family conversation about it. Most helpful are the exercises that help you identify where you are on the financial spectrum ("saver," "spender," or "servant") and specifically identify your needs and goals (from how much to keep in an "emergency fund" to how big of a house to own.)Most important: this book is *not* preachy or prescriptive! In reading it, I never felt guilt for past choices and never felt like I was being lectured by the authors. "God and Money" lays out guidelines for financial and philanthropic decision-making, but recognizes that everyone has unique personal situations that require a customized approach.Overall, it's a quick and easy read that leads to genuine self-reflection and actionable steps for change.
