J.D. Salinger enthralled the world with his story about an angsty teenager who gradually became aware of -and infuriated with- the "phoniness" of the world. Salinger's protagonist is blessed with extraordinary insight into people's hypocrisy and self-deception. The blessing seems at times a curse: the character has no friends, can't do well in school, is out of shape, and hints frequently at suicide. The discontent of Holden Caulfield is almost without limit (the astute reader notices that the NYC adventure is in fact narrated from an mental asylum in California).I don't know if 'EitB' will sell as well as 'CitR' (which outsold 6 of the 7 Harry Potter books), but, pound for pound, its pages are just as valuable.Like CitR, EitB is about "phoniness". But, unlike CitR, it *explains* phoniness: why it evolved, when/where it is likely to appear, and why we sometimes can't stop ourselves. The book is about our own thoughts, and since we think about ~everything, the concepts have near-universal applicability. Forewarned is forearmed (at least for a certain type of person), and readers will therefore be able to use EitB to improve their health and wealth with superior decision making. However, more interesting to me, is that *some* readers will inherit a repertoire of skills for optimized hyper-phoniness. These people will be world-class persuaders -- eventually, every leader will need to know (or at least name) the ideas presented here, if only for self-defense.This cognitive science book focuses on "ugly information", ie the kind that you don't want to show to other people. It is hard to talk about these ideas with one's friends. EitB is about disgraceful things -- things that we try not to admit, that we try not to talk about, and that we have in fact **evolved not to even think about**. After digesting the book's lessons, the reader will better understand not only [1] why our world has problems, but also [2] why some of those problems cannot be solved using traditional explanations (ie, explanations that take the form of straightforward verbal persuasion). As I hinted in the first paragraph, Elephant in the Brain is certainly not for everyone. The ideas presented are very unflattering, and, despite the authors' lighthearted attempts to backpedal the significance of their work by talking about the moon landing or whatever, the explanations in EitB are in fact informative, accurate, relevant, and significant. If anyone asks me, readers are in danger of replicating Holden Caulfield's experience of overwhelming frustration. Some people can't handle the truth, Plato's Allegory of the Cave, etc etc, ya know? This is one of those. If you're into that, you know what to do! Buy it!

I wish I'd noticed before ordering this book that the authors are not psychologists (one is an economist (and not a behavioral economist) the other is a software engineer). I've read other books on this topic (Kahneman, Ariely, etc) and this is not even a very good overview of the key ideas in the field. This is a book of speculation without much evidence. Makes lots of sweeping claims about human nature without substantive evidence or engagement with readily available counter-evidence. Also frustrating was the uncritical use of terms (e.g., humans are always self-interested — which is either (a) needs to be really carefully discussed or (b) an uninteresting tautology — this fell into (b) ) I thought that the fact that this was OUP guaranteed it'd be high quality. I was very disappointed. This isn't to say that what was in this book is false. Much of what's here is plausible and follows fairly obviously from much of what's written in evolutionary biology. There's just little here that goes beyond that which are the obvious implications and saying something new. The authors say that no one's ever written on this in the past but nothing they said here appeared new or original to me.

If this book didn't make you uncomfortable, you didn't understand it. It's a really wonderful and eye-opening book.Simler and Hanson ask you to consider that evolutionary hold-overs motivate even your most selfless acts. The Elephant in the Brain (because it's about a big thing in our brain that we don't acknowledge) argues that many of our actions are motivated by a desire to cultivate allies and mates and, to cultivate effectively, humans have learned to lie others and ourselves. We've learned to fool ourselves into thinking we're pretty great because that makes it easier to fool others into thinking we're pretty great. Our brains evolved succeed in a social setting. You can argue their explanation is an incomplete understanding of human behavior. The Elephant in the Brain isn't meant to be a handbook of the human brain, able to explain every single thing people do. It's meant to highlight a part of our thinking we willfully ignore. One of the authors is an economist, but the book also draws heavily on psychological and evolutionary research. Indeed, the selfishness argument that's at the heart of the book isn't an economic one (as one reviewer erroneously claims), but an evolutionary one.Appreciate how hard Simler and Hanson's argument is to show. "You're secretly lying to yourself!" is by definition something people will not be upfront about. Much of the book applies this self-deception/selfishness theory to different areas such as art, education, donations, and body language and concentrates on the contradictions. There's a disconnect between what we claim and what we see. The "elephant in the brain" fills the gap.To get a feel for how they make their argument, consider their chapter on donations. We typically think of donations as acts of pure selflessness--motivated by a "warm glow" from helping others--but Simler and Hanson point to some contradictions.-We typically do not do research on the organizations we donate to.-We are more often motivated by individual stories rather than statistics on effectiveness.-We rarely keep quiet about our donations and most donations are not anonymous. Even "anonymous" donations aren't kept quiet. If charity was all about helping others and nothing more, we'd be more careful about where the money goes and wouldn't be so concerned with advertising our benevolence. Charity, Simler and Hanson argue, is an advertisement: a way to show off to others so we can signal success and get allies.Don't make the mistake in thinking that this a conscious concern; it's more of an explanation as to why the glow is warmer for some acts of charity rather than others. Telling people about our donations feels better than keeping quiet. Helping a person we can identify feels better than helping statistical abstractions that represent people. Our ancestors who were apt at visible giving in a way that felt genuine were more likely to proliferate because they had more allies and better mates. Natural selection made us charitable, but in a weird way.To their credit, Simler and Hanson don't think humans are terrible people or donations shouldn't occur. They acknowledge multiple times that these hidden motives can have wonderful results. We should just be aware of how easily we can fool ourselves.

The key Takeaway is that human behavior is complex and that Subconscious motives lead social signaling of our virtue or value. However the overall data represent opinions rather than strong scientific evidence.

#856,716 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The author presents the material in the manner of a series of labyrinths, that is to say, it is done like an an intricate combination of paths in which it is difficult to find one's way or to reach to the exit. Without a doubt, the author is an expert with Solidwotks, so he does know the CAD software very well, but the student who is attempting to learn Solidworks is steadily forced or squeeze through the text in a torturous, seemlingly endless series of steps to create the CAD models with his often unclear written instructions and poorly shown graphics. Projet 10 covers additive manufacturing - 3D printing. This subject has nothing to do with Solidworks, and should not be covered in a textbook of this name. The author is verbose to the extreme. It is the unfortunate student who has to suffer through his long, boring and writing. The book is organized in 10 projects or chapters with a total of 757 pages. Project 2 on fundamentals of parts modeling is straight forward enough, it only has 601 steps over 104 pages to cover 3 parts. Project 3 on fundamentals of assembly modeling has 513 steps in 98 pages, only covered one assembly. Project 4 fundamentals of drawing has 507 steps over 92 pages, covered just one part drawing and one assembly drawing. Project 5 on extrude and revolve features, has 648 steps over 96 pages, and only covered 4 parts for a flash light assembly. Project 6 of the book on swept, lofted and additional features got worse, it has a total of 985 painful steps, over 94 pages to create just 4 parts and 4 assemblies to build the flashlight. I found in back of the chapters, the author presents several exercises which are very straight forward and are much more useful to students to learn the material than from following the main text. The very long text in each project forces the reader to jump back and forth between reading the step by step instructions, and then to the CAD session in progress. With so many steps involved in each task, and the instruction not too clear, one can get stuck at a point and not be able to continue the learning process. After many steps and pages, the reader is typically confused and frustrated. The reader then has to resort to other way to overcome the log jam. I went to Google to search for the answers on a particular command, or to the Solidworks help website for examples of doing the task. Often times, the answers are better found there then from this text. It appears to me that the author simply does not understand how students learn such a subject. Instead of showing the student with short understandable examples, he forces the student through a digestive track being subjected to grinding, squeezing, digestive juices, and blind groping to reach the unfortunate other end. I would also liken the process as sitting down to eat a meal and asked to eat a whole roast pig in one sitting. Students learn best in bite size unit. Not with a monster size Goliath of a turkey.Other modern CAD textbook authors present similar CAD subjects to the student by showing the student the the task and commands at hand, illustrates with examples, and explains the options and parameters connected to the command, so the student is never at a loss to what it is, what to do, how, and why.For the same subject material, I suggest CAD students check out "SOLIDWORKS 2017 and Engineering Graphics" by Randy Shih; "SoliwRorks 2016, A Tutorial Approach, 3rd Edition, by Sham Tickoo;, and "Solidworks 2017 Learning by Doing,", Tutorial Books.Reviewed by Luther Nieh, mehanical engineer, 08/11/2018

The tutorial video's sound is too low. I have a good new desktop and a speaker and turn on 100% of the volume, but I still can't hear it. My ears must touch the screen, but I still hear the voice too very low. I feel disappointed. When I watch any Youtube video, I only turn on the volume 50%. For this tutorial video, 100% of the volume, but I still can't hear well.

Thanks

Praise for Not a Good Day to Die“If you liked Black Hawk Down, you'll not be disappointed by Not a Good Day to Die...Extraordinary.”—New York Post“Naylor has doggedly pursued the full story of Operation Anaconda from the time he was 'embedded' with 101st Airborne Division troops who fought in the battle...often against the wishes of [U.S.] commanders...an admirable job of exposing [Operation Anaconda’s] many shortcomings.”—The Washington Post“The best full-scale history of Operation Anaconda to date.”—Booklist“Excellent.”—The Cleveland Plain Dealer

I think, although I gave it 'four stars', that Naylor should get five stars SIMPLY for trying to sort out the 'confusion' and 'chaos' of a military operation in modern times. As some have stated in their reviews, there is an lot of minutiae in the pages of this excellent book. The reader will have to turn those pages slowly and be prepared to 'review back' to cement some of the shifting actions/names/places/groups that make up the book. One thing is clear, when the action heats up the 'plans' (as anyone who studies the military and war knows) can go out the window. As Eisenhower said, "In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable." That is proven by the outcomes in the various stages of "Not A Good Day To Die". The book's strengths: displaying, as is often the case, the incredible fortitude, courage and heroics of those who step up into harms way and serve each other and our country; displaying, as is (again) often the case, that politics, politicians and any military personalities that aspire to such political positions are as useless as 'teats on a bull.' America's military direction has not been towards strength and the reader must recognize that even this many years ago 'expediency', 'ROEs', and politically arrived at arbitrary 'caps' can do more to ruin a campaign that well placed enemy fire.I very much liked this book and believe it is a fine example of the many goods in our military and the few 'bads' in our overall management of the Armed Services. We mustn't allow the military to be further degraded and this book shows how wrong motivations can handicap even the best of military leaders and intentions. Bravo to Americans in uniform... hiss and boo to the 'opportunistic' politicians and like motivated military personnel who put their advancement ahead of the lives of our men and women and victory. Everyone should read this to see how 'it really works.'

How can American troops go into combat without proper support such as artillery or better communications? Troops died in this combat operation because troops couldn't communicate with one another largely because of interservice rivalries. There is the story of a medevac carried out at night when a helicopter carrying a team of seals jumped out and provided 360 security. In the meantime army personal, medevac medics, and others had to struggle in the cold thin air for over 19 minutes to get their wounded on helicopters without the help of the seal team. All this angered the army personal and others. The sad part is that no one was ever held to answer for the incompetent leadership, the officers who threw their weapons down and tried to run from the battle, and the lack of support required to keep our men safe. I highly recommend this book and it should be read by all.

Sean Naylor nails it with this fascinating and thoroughly engrossing account of one of the most ferocious fights of the Global War on Terrorism to date. The first set piece battle of the 21st century for the U.S. military, Operation Anaconda endeavors to demonstrate how conventional forces and special operations forces can be effectively integrated. The unforgiving Shahikot Mountains of northeastern Afghanistan are the setting for this superb chronicle of modern combat. In addition to revealing some of the struggles inherent in integrating conventional and special operations forces, Anaconda exposes lingering interoperability problems in combining Navy, Army, and Air Force elements in joint operations. When the units involved are hit by a perfect storm of challenges - everything from a convoluted, unwieldy command and control structure to poor intelligence to an astonishingly well-equipped and well-trained Al Qaeda main force - the operation's success appears in jeopardy. While von Clauswitz's "friction of battle" (and perhaps Murphy's Law) clearly had a place at the table in this one, Naylor fairly points out that there was at times an obvious failure of leadership. In a testament to the courage and adaptability of both special operators and light infantrymen, however, U.S. and allied forces gradually reduce Al Qaeda's combat effectiveness mostly through "fires" - precision air strikes, lethal attack helicopters, and well-placed mortar fire. If not for the special operators on the ground, particularly 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force) and Australian SAS reconnaissance elements operating far forward in observation posts and directing many of those air strikes, U.S. casualties would have been far more numerous.Remarkable for the degree to which highly classified 'black' operations are illuminated, Not a Good Day to Die is without a doubt the most eminently readable of the many books to emerge from the War in Afghanistan to date. While I knew more than most about Operation Anaconda and the battle for the Shahikot Valley, the author's extraordinary effort to reveal what actually happened, especially on Takur Ghar Mountain where the most violent, close combat took place, and to reconcile the many conflicting media accounts of the battle was extremely helpful to me.Through extensive interviews and exhaustive research in spite of an apparent effort to restrict his access to after action reports and other documents, Naylor meticulously pieces together the events of the battle.Perhaps most surprising was the extent to which the author exposes the many flaws in planning; the violation of many of the military's revered principles of war; and, the degree to which senior leaders "half a world away" attempt to command essentially through videoconferencing and other satellite communications technologies. Not only are we witness to the flaws in the human element of waging war, but we gain an appreciation for the limits of our 'superior' technology. We discover once again that there is no substitute for the U.S. Army infantryman when it comes to seizing and holding ground.Interestingly, Naylor's depiction of the vaunted U.S. Navy SEALs, surprisingly including members of SEAL Team 6, suggests that their training for mountain warfare may be sorely lacking. In fact, it becomes clear that in an effort to get SEALs into the fight, the Task Force 11 commander (Task Force 11 was the 'black' operations command) may have overestimated the SEALs' capabilities and sent them in unprepared for what they would face.Despite Not a Good Day to Die's many merits, I found certain elements of the book not quite up to par. For instance, the editing is poor. Some information is actually repeated, and there are misstatements and typos. Beyond that, Naylor spends an excessive amount of time on the run up to the battle, and as a result the story bogs down a bit in the early chapters. Most readers could probably get by with considerably less detail around the planning stages of the operation.Nevertheless, this is a story that needed to be told, and Sean Naylor does a tremendous job telling it.I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know what actually happened in Operation Anaconda.Riveting!

So i’ve been in early childhood education for 20 years, all of my adult life. I have 7 children 6 grandchildren . I’ve taught preschool, been a nanny the list goes on.I love reading to children and love great books. This book is a must have book in all children’s libraries. Why?• The book is a larger book. Perfect for reading out loud to a group of children or to one child sitting next to you• the story is written with an artistic flair for the written word. It’s like a song and a poem had a baby and out comes Rosie Revere Engineer.• Postive message: about being different, about never giving up, it’s about multi-generations of girl power!• if you get all of the creators books you’ll begin to notice really cute drawings in the pages that connect the books together.•New York Times best seller. This book is also great because there is a need to show our children that women and girls are more than princesses.

While I admire all the previous reviewers who gave fewer stars, because they are raising children without an ounce of self-doubt, try as I might to encourage her otherwise, my introverted 4 year old often gets frustrated when trying new things. This isn't due to inept parenting or a flaw in her personality, it's just who she is. New experiences leave her cautious and unsure and, in our family of big personalities, I often worry that she is unintentionally outshone. Rosie's story is a great way to reinforce to her that even if she doesn't get the outcome she was hoping for right away, she shouldn't give up.Previous reviewers compared Rosie to Iggy, complaining that Iggy was portrayed as bold, confident, and a natural, wishing Rosie was written similarly. How boring that would have been! We have all three of Andrea Beaty's books about Miss Lila Greer's second grade class at Blue River Creek, and appreciate that all the main characters are different. Just because Iggy is a boy or Rosie is blonde or Ada is a POC, my brunette, blue-eyed daughter still finds them all relatable. For those of you who are raising children who are not always extroverted or 100% confident, this is a great book. A bit of warning, though. This line?"Before it crashed, Rosie... before that... It flew."Gets me every time. You've been warned.

One of my favorite authors and the woman who inspires me to do my best daily read this book during her women's conference RISE. There wasn't a dry eye in the building by the time she finished reading it aloud, with many of us leaving the room admitting we were going to immediately find the book and purchase it. I don't have children yet, but I have a wonderful, amazing mother who just retired from her role as a Chemical Engineer for over 27 years. This book screamed Mother's Day gift to me and it was a hit, my mom cried while reading too.Andrea Beaty has written a children's novel for children and adults alike. It features an endearing character, Rosie, and her desperate hope of becoming an engineer. It's a whimsical tale told with lyrical words and gorgeous art. It's inspiring, moving, and might even be my favorite children's book I've ever read. Just don't tell Corduroy. I really appreciated that young Rosie has big dreams and even though the dream seems too big, it takes just one person and the perfect words to spark her spirit once again after a failure leads her to calling it quits. I absolutely recommend this children's short and will be purchasing it, and the other two books, for all future baby shower and kid's birthday gifts.

Our two and a half year old daughter loves this book. The story, the rhymes, the pictures, all of it. The writing is fun and whimsical and rolls of the tongue with the fluidity and frolic of the best of Dr Seuss or Shel Silverstein. The pictures are beautiful, colorful and intricate, and even on pages of denser, longer text, where my little girl's attention might wander, the artwork keeps her entranced. If your own two-year-old is one with a shorter attention span, the book will still take hold of her or his heart a little later. If your kiddo is between 4-6, maybe 7, this book will ROCK.Oh yeah, and the message. THE MESSAGE! :-) Girl Power, baby. But not overtly. Rosie is NEVER ridiculed because she's a girl. Her challenges have NOTHING whatsoever to do with gender. But she IS a girl. And her new hero and mentor IS an iconic WOMAN. And that's what I wanted. A protagonist with whom my own little girl might identify. Awesome. Super Highly Recommended. Along with Ms Beaty's "Ada Twist, Scientist" - another huge winner.

This book became dear to me from the first read.I bought this as a gift for my niece, but made sure to read it prior so I'd get the flow/rhythm of it before reading it aloud to her.It is SO SWEET, and delivers such a powerful message—I found myself getting choked up towards the end. I almost wanted to keep it for myself! It would've meant so much to have had this type of literature when I was a kid, and that's how I knew it was essential that I read it (and gift it) to my niece.

This is my all time favorite children’s book. It was given to my daughter (age 3), by a dear friend of mine (who happens to be a fellow scientist and mom of two little girls). She told me only that this book belongs in the library of all little girls. Boy was she right! It is a beautifully written story about resilience, perseverance and strength of character with a subtle but unmistakable jab at gender stereotypes. I love the relationship between Rosie and her great aunt, and the nod to strong and smart women of all generations who help to lift each other up when the going gets tough. After reading it hundreds of times, I still can’t get through it without choking up a little each time. Thank you, Andrea Beaty!

It was on the book list as a recommend book for maternity class. Wanting to do the best as I can in class, I purchased it. Honestly never used it. So it's not fair to say I loved it, but at the same time can't say it's a bad purchase either. Usually I find workbooks helpful, but in this case it was an unnecessary purchase. I may have been a God send with a different instructor.

I recieved this Workbook within 2 days of the purchase and it was in perfect condition. It was also much cheaper than it would have been if I had bought it from the college bookstore. The workbook is an excellent companion with the text!!! Very happy customer!!

I would have given it 5 stars if it had more questions. I would recommend this book because it helps reinforce the concepts of each chapter.

It wasn't bad and it helped put together what we were studying. I wish they would put out a study guide that just had the answers right next to the question rather than looking to the back of the book. It was too much information to keep going back and forth I ended up coping and taping the answers underneath the questions.

I ordered this study guide to go along with my OB text book, and it has been very helpful, I finished this class with an A.

this workbook is a very helpful tool for class and it was deliverd in a timely manner and in perfect condition.

It was very fast shipment and my book came in great condition. I am satisfied and would trust them again.

It was in excellent condition and worked well with my class a bug help thanks for the wonderful book and great price!

Treating Dementia in Context: A Step-by-Step Guide to Working with Individuals and Families

Review

''...The authors provide excellent practical strategies for addressing problem behaviors in dementia care recipients such as unsafe driving, diminished self-care, verbal and physical aggression, and wandering. They also offer a useful and systematic approach to addressing and resolving these problem behaviors through the use of contextual and behavioral analysis. Treating Dementia in Context is not only pragmatic it is also well written. The book provides detailed, step-by-step advice for gathering information, building rapport, communicating effectively with patients who are cognitively impaired, and conducting a functional analysis of each individuals presenting concerns. Suggestions are provided for improving caregivers patience, using humor, individualizing care, and providing help to individuals with dementia when help is not wanted. Hence, this book is a very appropriate and useful resource not just for behavioral health professionals and other professional caregivers, but also for family, loved ones, and other caregivers who are involved with an individual with dementia. The authors provide useful recommendations for evaluating and responding to patient or caregiver noncompliance with medication regimens. Certainly, for those of us who have family members and/or clients who suffer from a progressive dementia, recognizing, understanding, and addressing treatment plan noncompliance are frequent problems that require caregiver vigilance and patience, followed by appropriate education and redirection. The book is helpful in that respect. Valuable guidance for preserving the relationship between dementia care recipients and their loved ones by redefining expectations, roles, and responses to dilemmas is one among many highlights of this book. McCurry and Drossel emphasize the importance of maintaining affection between dementia patients and their loved ones through behavioral and contextual functional analysis designed to increase intimacy, friendship, and trust. The book emphasizes the importance of professionals and caregivers recognizing and preserving key role identities for the dementia care recipient as long as possible in order to maintain a sense of self and connection with the social fabric. Some of the authors suggestions are deliberately novel, consistent with the unique and diverse lifestyles found among our aging population as well as among younger caregivers. In these circumstances, the authors recognize that unconventional approaches and solutions merit consideration.'' --PsycCRITIQUES
