Review

"This excellent book on all aspects of Japanese tie-dye has been so influential worldwide that ‘shibori’ has actually become the term for this field."—Jack Lenor Larsen"This beautiful book is a classic within the field of textile literature. The information it contains—with clearly written text and wonderful illustrations—has been so useful to artists, students and scholars since it was first published in 1983. It is wonderful that it will now be available as a paperback."—Gillian Moss, Curatorial Chair, Curator of Textiles Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum"This is the invaluable book that has launched a thousand contemporary shibori artists. Among all the texts in the field of surface design, this is the priceless jewel in the lotus!"—Jason Pollen, President, Surface Design Association, Chair, Fiber Department, Kansas City Art Institute"…Masterfully organized and rich in detail, Shibori is of great benefit to the student, fiber artist and researcher alike." —Glen Kaufman, Fiber artist, Professor, University of Georgia"Marvelous… This is the kind of book that every fibre artist would love to have on his library shelves… To my knowledge there is no other treatise in English which explicates this area of textile art. Shibori fills a gap in the literature of textiles."—Tec Hallman, Professor of Textiles, Ontario College of Art and Design

As expected!

Once you learn the basic's of shibori, and if you are interested in excelling at shibori fabric dying, then this is the book to buy!!!As a beginner, when I first bought this book I found it overwhelming. I turned to an other shibori book I bought here on Amazon called "Shibori a Beginner's Guide to Creating Color & Texture on Fabric." Then once I learned the basic's and reread this book, I found what an awesome encyclopedia of making and learning shibori, I had in my hands! The instructions are simple enough once you learn the basics, and this book is loaded with many, many, many pictures, examples, and instructions, that will keep you busy experimenting and creating shibori dyed cloth!Out of the three shibori fabric dying books I bought, this is far exceeds the other's in information and pictures in it's 303 pages. In saying that, I would first suggest you learn the basic's of shibori before buying and using this book. Then when you read this book, you will be amazed of all the ways to create shibori dyed cloth, and how simple many of them are ;-)

Such a fine information-packed book with lovely hand drawn illustrations and accompanying photos, but unfortunately this reprint (at least my copy) is of inferior quality both in color and black and white photo replication and text. I am sad for the book to have fallen into a poor printing company's hands. Mary Kellogg Rice's pencil drawings almost disappear in places. The text is unevenly weighted, going from dark to light. It's still a great resource, but: dang!!Another art book I've recently purchased that had been out of print for some time and reprinted in small quantities had this same issue. Photocopy?!

I feel so fortunate that I made the decision to drop $50 on a used book. I'm a bit obsessive about researching, and once I started investigating Shibori techniques, this book was mentioned over and over as *the* Shibori manual to have (in English, anyway). I debated about buying the softcover book new, but decided that even if my Shibori craft doesn't take off as I hope, that this book in hardback would be a coffee-table book to cherish. And it is. The photographs are beautiful. The instructions and diagrams are complete and easy to understand. I have many hours of inspiration to guide me in this awesome craft, whether trying to duplicate the traditional techniques and patterns, or simply adapting them to more contemporary tie dye. I set up my first indigo vat, and the results are impressive, and certainly gift-worthy, if not marketable (yet). If you have an interest in textiles, shibori, or tie dying, you need this book!As for the price, again, I must have luck on my side to have snagged this hardback book, in great condition, for $50. I will value and *use* it!

This book struck me as being on the price-y side, so I had put off getting it, even though I tend to buy textile books rather indiscriminately. Besides, even though I've been known to teach tie-dyeing, my own focus is loom-controlled shibori, which is not a traditional shibori technique, and is not covered by this book. However, when I finally saw this book in real life, I knew I had to have it, and even the full retail price seemed like a bargain. It is rare to find a book that thoroughly covers equipment and techniques (there's even instructions for an indigo vat in the appendix), and also is unabashed eye candy. The authors/publishers managed costs intelligently; there are plenty of color photos, but no gratuitous or distracting color. Many patterns in the gallery are shown in black-and-white, which helps the reader focus on the important aspects of design in addition to keeping the price of the book reasonable. There is a short section on history; large sections on each of the basic techniques; a gallery section showing even more examples (even though the discussions of the individual techniques are amply illustrated); and a discussion, mostly in photos, of modern textile-art pieces along with artists' statements. There's even a handy glossary. A must-have for fiber artists!

I purchased this book for a friend on the recommendation of a textile expert. I was impressed with the quality of the pictures and she was delighted with it.

Love this book! A very good source and reference to learn about classical Japanese shibori; the history, the art as well as the techniques. Eventhough the pictures only in black n white, but the step by step explanation about the technique is great. I've tried some and prove them worked!

This book was recommended by a teacher that I had the good fortune to take a workshop from. There are many good book on Shibori Technique and history but I think this book is, simply, the best of it's kind. There may not be quite as many beautiful photographs in this book as there are in others but for background history and technique explanations this book is the one book I would choose if I could have only one book about the subject! "Memory On Cloth" is another phenomenal book by this author - and it is filled with lush photographs and the definitive history behind this amazing art form.

Very informative. Great addition to my textile art library.
